Another Leaked Sprint Roadmap Confirming 755p Launch

Treo 755pFor the final few individuals still skeptical of the upcoming Treo 755p launch, Engadget Mobile has just posted another leaked Sprint handset release roadmap. With several "official" leaks in such close proximity to one another, this device is almost certainly a reality.

While there's precious little in the way of new Treo 755p information, this latest chart does give release dates and pricing for a slew of feature phone and smartphone releases on the Sprint CDMA network. Unchanged from our earlier report, the 755p is still slated for launch in the month of May. 700p is still listed for EOL right after the delivery of its comprehensive ROM update in that same timeframe. Two colors of 755p, blue and burgundy, are also still set for release.

RIM Announces Blackberry Suite for Windows Mobile

Research In Motion (RIM) today announced plans to release a "Blackberry Application Suite" for select Windows Mobile 6 devices later this year. Once installed, the software will provide users with a virtual BlackBerry application experience, including support for BlackBerry email, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging and other applications developed for the BlackBerry platform.

Register Article on Palm's Diminished Windows Mobile Focus

An intriguing article concerning a possible lessening of focus by Palm on Windows Mobile has appeared on The Register. As is the Register’s usual M.O. when writing gossipy news items, the author of the article may or may not be privy to a number of rumors not mentioned in the article -- so any and all analysis of the piece should be taken with equal amounts of interest and skepticism.

While a bit rambling in places, the article makes several interesting and possibly accurate suppositions concerning Palm’s new-found shift towards a new “Palm OS-on-Linux” successor platform. Palm promised during their recent Analyst Day conference to not only continue shipping new Garnet-based devices but also introduce the first Linux-based product later on this calendar year. That would bring the number of OSes requiring support by Palm from two to three.

RhinoSkin Treo 700 Aluminum Case Review

Treo Rhinoskin case ReviewWhile recently attending a sporting event I nearly lost my Treo 700p for good. I had a tray of nachos in hand and tried to answer a call when the Treo went flying out of my SmartPhoneExperts pouch case and slid across the floor before hitting a concrete column. The 700p fortunately survived unscathed but that event made me realize the pouch case’s lack of security, combined with its growing decrepitude from heavy daily usage, made a new Treo case a necessity.

OpenMoko Running on a Palm TX

OpenMoko Palm TXOpenMoko is a Linux based open source project to build a fully open smartphone operating system and hardware. The enterprising Palm hackers at Hack&Dev have recently had some sucess in getting a current build of OpenMoko to run on a Palm TX and have posted a series of pictures and some instructions.

OpenMoko isn't going to replace the Palm OS on the TX anytime soon as there are a number of issues and incompatibilities. It is primarily designed for a 640x480 screen, so a lot of work had to be done to scale it down to the TX's 480x320 resolution and some elements do not make the transition well. The other main issue is that the OpenMoko software is still in its very early stages and much of it is not even functional yet. Still quite an interesting example of mobile Linux hacking skills.

Both platforms will run 68k and ARM PNO application code. Both Release and Debug (with extra parameter checking and error messages) versions are included.

PalmAddicts Editorial on 700p Status Report

700p updatePalmAddicts' Deputy Editor, PJ Arts, has posted a hard-hitting editorial piece lambasting Palm for a series of missteps, miscommunications, and delays in the Treo 700p's year on the market.

P.J. takes Palm's blog post from yesterday and analyzes it line by line and provides his own counterpoint to Palm's take on the issue. One particularly troubling absence (as mentioned in yesterday's PIC news item on the blog post) in the PalmAddicts piece is the absence of any mention by Palm of the app switching lag being addressed. The phone app lag that Palm references is not as annoying as the lag noticed when moving from app to app or when performing memory-intensive tasks within the OS.

Palm Blog Update on the 700p Maintenance Release

As promised, Palm's Steve Sinclair has updated the new Palm corporate blog with a lengthy post concerning the status of the long-awaited, much-delayed 700p ROM maintenance release. In short, Mr. Sinclair and Palm are unusually outgoing in this blog entry and provide not only an updated estimated release date (May 28th) for the ROM patch but give a list of improvements and fixes that are expected to be contained in the update. Steve Sinclair goes on to give some reasons why Palm prefers to roll up a handful of bugfixes into a single, comprehensive maintenance release instead of issuing smaller intermittent patches. Despite earlier reports to the contrary, Mr. Sinclair states in today's entry that the 700p update is still in the midst of the carrier testing and certification process and awaiting final approval.

This blog entry is also well worth reading for frustrated Treo 700p owners upset at the speed with which the Treo 680 was patched versus the nearly year-long delay in addressing the 700p's issues. The essential technical differences between the Treo 680 and 700p updates are highlighted and discussed accordingly.
