Quickies: Palm Rumor, Palmtop User, HanDBase, Backdrop GC

Later this year, PalmSource is expected to split off from Palm Inc. According to rumor, the remaining part of the company, which makes hardware, will not be named "Palm Inc.". PalmSource will own the brand "Palm" and the hardware division will get a new name. It is not yet known what that new name will be. -Ed

Palmtop Publications has published the first issue of Palmtop User, a magazine designed for anyone who uses a Palm, Handspring, Sony, or other handheld computer or communicator. It includes news, in-depth reviews and features, tips and solutions. -PR

Wirelessly Access Info from Outlook or Notes

Wireless Knowledge is offering the Workstyle Desktop Edition, which allow users of smartphones to wirelessly access the email, calendar, and contact information stored on their desktop computers. It works with both Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. A 30-day test of the system is free and, after that, a year subscription costs $70.

Screenshots from OS 5 Web Browser Released

In June, PalmSource announced that Access Systems America would make a version of its NetFront Web browser to be included in Palm OS 5. This browser will support numerous Internet standards, including the latest W3C specifications, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0, dynamic HTML, SSL (Secure Socket Layer), and ECMA Script (JavaScript). Infosync has some screenshots from this browser that were put together by Access Systems to demonstrate its capabilities.

Quickies: Handspring CFO, BugMe!, Mailer, LotR, Jot, Baseball

Handspring has chosen William R. Slakey, 44, to be its Chief Financial Officer, effective September 30. He's a former Palm and Apple employee. -PR

Electric Pocket has released new versions of its BugMe! and Mailer apps. Support has been added to both for Sony hi-res and hi-res+ screens. -PR

Sony Releases Info on Game Controller

SonyStyle Hong Kong now lists some of the first information available on the PEGA-GC10, a game controller. The GC10 clips to the front of the handheld and a cable connects to the HotSync port. It will comes with a copy of Columns from Sega, a game that appears quite similar to Tetris. The GC10 is not yet available and Sony didn't even list an estimated release date. A price is also not yet available.

Sony SJ20 and SJ30 Announced in Australia and Hong Kong

Sony Australia is now taking pre-orders for the SJ20 and SJ30, which are similar to the already released SL10 but with enhanced features. SonyStyle Hong Kong also lists the SJ20 and SJ30. SonyStyle's U.S. division doesn't yet say anything about these. The information given on these models confirms most of what has only been rumor before.

Spectec SD Camera Available Soon

According to Gavin Maxwell from Pocket Science, Spectec is close to releasing its SD digital camera for Palm's m500 series. It will sell for less than $150. Spectec is a manufacturer but not a retailer, and it is not yet known who will be selling this camera.

This camera fits on top of the handheld and transfers data through the SD slot. The Palm's screen acts as the viewfinder.

Crucial Technology is now offering 128 MB MMC cards for $100. -Ed

Sony has quietly acknowledged the problem the NR series is having with its Memory Stick slot by including a mention of it in its Clié FAQ. At this point, Sony suggests that everyone experiencing the problem call the Sony Customer Information Services Center at 877-760-SONY. -Steven Lee

32 MB Memory Upgrade Coming Soon (Updated)

PDA Kobo has announced that it has developed a hardware and software solution that upgrades a Dragonball VZ processor to 32 MB of RAM. The process begins by taking out the handheld's current RAM chip and putting in 32 MB one. This could have caused problems because the handheld can't address that much RAM but the company came up with an interesting solution. It developed the Enhanced RAM Disk Driver (ERDD), which makes the additional 16 MB of memory act like an SD Card or Memory Stick.

Rumor: More Info on Palm's Forthcoming Low-End Handheld

Several sources have come forward with more information on the sub-$100 model Palm will release later this year. According to one who says he has actually seen a prototype, it is a very basic model with 2 MB of memory and no SD/MMC slot. It is not a member of the venerable m100 series. Instead, it has a shape which is described as being similar to Sony's T series. It will come in an all-white plastic casing.

The Treo 300, which works with Sprint's new high-speed wireless network, is available now from the Sprint PCS webstore and Handspring. It is 4.3 by 2.7 by .7 inches and 5.2 ounces. The Treo 300 offers 2.25 hours talk time or up to 5 days of stand-by time in digital mode and sells for $500. -Brian Elkins

Don't Use Batteries; Just Say ''Fill 'er Up''

MTI MicroFuel Cells Inc. is making progress towards creating a methanol fuel cell small and inexpensive enough to power a handheld. These will get their power, not by being plugged into a wall socket, but from a tiny replaceable methanol fuel cartridge. It is still in the prototype stage and the smallest model is currently about the size of a deck of playing cards, but in coming years the company hopes its fuel cells will be far smaller while providing ten times the power as a li-ion battery of the same size.
