One of the most persistant rumors in the handheld industry, almost as long-running as the one that Apple is going to release another handheld, is that Palm and Handspring are working on a merger.
Unstrung is fanning the rumor fires this time, quoting an unnamed industry watcher who says Credit Suisse First Boston is trying to bring about a merger of the two handheld companies. However, Handspring's CEO Donna Dubinsky is resisting the idea because she doesn't want to work for a large company where she won't be in control.

When Palm was trying to decide what direction to take its next-generation operating system, it first considered basing it on Symbian and later on Linux, according to
The Register.
In 1999, Palm made plans to rewrite the Palm OS to be based on the Symbian OS but Palm's Board of Directors was opposed to the idea so the deal fell apart. Next, the company strongly considered basing it on Linux. However, the company's lawyers weren't happy about basing a proprietry operating system on one that is open-source so that plan was dropped in favor of developing one from the ground up.

The
Motorola Dragonball MX1 is the first microprocessor certified by PalmSource to work with the just released Palm OS 5. This means that any licensee can easily use this processor at the heart of a handheld that runs the new operating system. The DragonBall MX1 is an ARM core-based microprocessor which offers speeds up to 200 MHz.
Certification of the processors of the Palm OS Ready Program members couldn't happen until the final version of Palm OS 5 was available, which wasn't until earlier this month. There should be similar announcements coming from the other chip makers in the near future.
