HP TouchPad Review

Week in Review: Dec. 30 - Jan. 5

This was another holiday week so news was light. Palm's temporary CEO gave a rough timetable for hardware releases this year and a likely release date for the Handspring Treo was in the NY Times. Sony released updates so its desktop software would work with Windows XP. Speaking of Sony, there is also a rumor that it will soon release the S360.

New Palm.net Proxy Server Starting Monday

Editorial: What To Expect from the Consumer Electronics Show

The 2002 International Consumer Electronics Show will kick off on Tuesday in Las Vegas and last through the week. As its name implies, the focus for this show is on home users, not businesses like many of the large computer trade shows.

Many companies like to make announcements at shows like these so they are close-mouthed about their plans for the show. However, a few educated guesses can be made.

Handspring Treo Available January 14

The NY Times David Pogue has written a very positive review of the wireless Handspring Treo. In addition to his other comments, he said something that Handspring probably isn't thrilled about. According to Mr. Pogue, the Treo will be released on Monday, January 14. Handspring itself has only said the Treo 180 and 180g would be available sometime this month but not given an exact day. It isn't unusual for reviewers to be told the release dates of products but they are asked not to reveal them if the company hasn't.

Quickies: iWalk, Developer Finder, PDA HandyMan

SpyMac has what it claims are pictures and movies of a PDA that Apple will announce next week. According to it, the iWalk does not run the Palm OS. Update: The info has now been removed from SpyMac's site. -Ed

PalmGear.com is introducing a feature that will allow visitors to find a Palm OS developer for custom software development. MobileCoders.com powers the new locator. Visitors can search by criteria such as technical expertise, rate, location and industry experience. They can then contact the developer directly to request a proposal. -Brandon Lackey

Review: Rand McNally Road Atlas

One of the great advantages of handhelds is they can compress a tremendous amount of information into a very small space. Rand McNally has taken full advantage of this ability by cramming its huge road atlas onto a memory card the size of a postage stamp. Guest reviewer Kevin Crossman brings us this review of the new PalmPak Travel Card: Rand McNally Road Atlas.

Rumor: Sony to Release S360

According to the online retailer J&R, Sony has discontinued the S320 and will soon be replacing it with the PEG-S360, which will have 16 MB of RAM instead of the S320's 8 MB. It will cost $200, which is the price the S320 was released at, though it has since been dropped to $170. Of course, the S360 will run some version of OS 4, presumably 4.1. J&R doesn't know when it will have the S360 in stock; it's just telling its customers who try to order it that it'll be in very soon. It is already taking pre-orders for the new model.

Palm Lays Out 2002 Hardware Timetable

Palm's Chairman and temporary CEO Eric Benhamou gave an updated timetable for his company's plans for new hardware releases this year in a NY Times interview.

First off, he said that Palm's much delayed wireless handheld will be out within two months. It had originally planned to release a VIIx replacement before the end of 2001 but had to push it back until this year.
