Sony Announces Financial Results

Sony has announced financial results for the most recent quarter. As Sony is such a huge company it is very difficult pull out handheld-related figures. Their information and communications division, which encompasses both PDAs and mobile phones, had revenues of about $2.5 billion but PDAs are only a small part of that.

The division's revenues increased a small 1.6% in the past year but sales of Sony's handhelds have increased far more than that since the release this year of four well-received handheld models.

A rumor has been circulating that the background on the T415's screen is paper white. A Sony spokesperson described it as being less green and more gray than the S320's and less dark, too. However, he never refered to it as "paper white". -Ed

Rumor: Color T415 in December

According to Brando's Palm news site, Sony will be releasing a color version of the T415 in December. The site does not give any information on the source of this info. It also doesn't say what the screen resolution will be. It does say it will run Palm OS 4.1 and cost HK$2650, which is about US$340.

When asked, a Sony spokesperson gave the company's standard answer to questions about rumors, "No comment."

LUDIgames has released Lock'Em Up, an action/puzzle game in which the player has to maneuver four not too smart little characters through a maze. It has 35 levels with different challenges, four creatures with different behavior, and five difficulty levels. It supports both color and grayscale handhelds. It is available now for $15.

Red-M Intros Bluetooth Springboard

Red-M will begin selling a Bluetooth Springboard module later this month. It's small enough that using it doesn't make the Visor either thicker or taller. It allows users to connect via a Bluetooth access point to a network or PC or even another Bluetooth-enabled handheld or mobile phone. It will be in retail stores for $180.

PDA Pocket Keyboard gets UC Adapter, Intl. Version

Cirque and Fellowes have released adapters that let the PDA Pocket Keyboard be used with the Palm m125, m500 and m505 or future handhelds that use the Palm Universal Connector. They also introduced an International version.

The PDA Pocket Keyboard is a touch panel based on the Cirque GlidePoint technology. It can be used on a flat surface or held in the hands. Supposedly the suggested price is $40 but Cirque is selling them for $42.

Handhelds Go to War

Sailors and soldiers heading off to war are bringing Palm OS handhelds with them. According to a WSJ article, in the past year, Palm has sold between 30 and 50 thousand Palms to the Navy and 25 to 30 thousand units to the Army, mostly in the past year and a half.

Sailors on the USS McFaul, a guided-missile destroyer which is taking an active part in the attacks on terrorists in Afghanistan, use Palm V's to both perform their duties and exchange email with their families. They can access the ship's network through IR ports scattered through the ship.

New Programs Aid Application Developers (Updated)

Palm has announced several new programs aimed at helping the large number of third-party developers who write apps for the Palm OS.. They include an improved, two-level Palm OS Developer Program, a certification exam to recognize the most elite Palm OS developers, and a new Palm-authorized Online Training Program.

The Palm Developer Program now has an "Advantage" level that offers direct technical support from Palm, a quarterly resource CD containing the latest development tools and technologies, and marketing opportunities. This requires a yearly fee.

Sony Announces Superslim T415 with Hi-Res Mono Screen (Updated)

Sony has announced a new mid-range handheld today, the PEG-T415, a 320 by 320 monochrome model that is, according to Sony, the world's thinnest PDA. Though only .39 inches thick, it has a Jog Dial and a Memory Stick slot.

It tries to strike a balance between serious and fun. For business users, it is the first Sony model to come bundled with Documents to Go for compatibility with Microsoft Office. For fun, its infrared port has been enhanced to let it be used as a TV/VCR remote and it has an improved speaker and audio abilities.

It will be available near the end of November for $300.

Sony has announced that the first non-memory Memory Stick will be a digital camera. With the not exactly exciting name PEGA-MSC1, this camera will be able to take pictures at up to 320 x 240 pixels. It has a swiveling lens that allows it to take a picture of either the user or what's in front of the user. It runs off power from the handheld so no additional batteries are necessary. It will be available in late November for $150.

Update: The MSC1 will only work with the N760C, N610C, T415 and OS upgraded N710C.
