Quickies: FilePoint, AppForge Personal Edition, ttools Stylus

Bachmann Sotware is developing a new app named FilePoint. The company is being a bit vague about exactly what it will do. Dan Reuvers from Bachmann said only, "FilePoint will allow Palm OS users the ability to enjoy a level of organization among their growing assortment of resident content that doesn't exist today. Like PrintBoy, FilePoint is intended to be a utility that will enhance Palm users' ability to access their information in an efficient manner." More details should be revealed at PC Expo.

AppForge Personal Edition has been reduced from $70 to $20 from now until the release of their 2.0 version in August. It requires at least Microsoft Visual Basic Working Edition.

Rumor: Palm to Release New Mid-Range Model

According to The Register, Palm is currently working on a mid-range model between the m100 and m500 series. They cite "industry sources who've been briefed by Palm on its plans" as their source. They apparently didn't have many details or specifications on the model, or even its name. However, it has long been rumored that Palm would release an m300 series, which would be their new mid-range. This model could be it.

Palm Releases Sidelight Utility for m505

About a month ago, a Palm executive said they were developing an application that would perform the same function as GlowHack, keeping the m505's sidelight on. They have now released the Palm m500 Series Backlight Utility, which remembers the state the backlight was on when the Palm was shut down. It is free and less than 2K.

Write Apps That Work on Both Palm and PPC

With the introduction of the AppForge Software Development Kit (SDK) and AppForge 2.0, Microsoft Visual Studio developers can write applications and ActiveX controls that work on PalmOS and Pocket PC devices. The AppForge SDK allows developers to use Microsoft Visual C++ to create applications and ActiveX controls a variety of devices using a single code base. AppForge 2.0 lets the millions of Visual Basic developers create applications for both software platforms.

New Versions of gMovie Player and Maker Debut

Generic Media has announced the release of gMovie Maker 2 and gMovie Player 2.

gMovie Player 2 supports both compressed stereo audio and uncompressed audio. This free app uses built-in pinhole speakers for audio playback in synch with video, animation, and still images in the gMovie format on most Palm Powered handhelds. It also supports high quality stereo audio on select Palm handhelds equipped with audio hardware, most notably the next-generation Clié. An audio-capable version of gMovie Player is pre-installed on every N710C.

Ethernet Cradles for Visors Announced

Portsmith, Inc. has announced that a version of the Portsmith Ethernet Cradle will soon be released that is designed for the Visor. It provides a fast connection to corporate networks for single-button synchronization of mission-critical data. It will be available in quantities in July but a price isn't yet available.

Quickies: MiniCalc and PrintBoy, Visor in Korea

Bachmann Software has added to PrintBoy support for printing MiniCalc's spreadsheets . PrintBoy allows printing from many applications to infrared-capable printers. -Kevin Doel

Handspring has announced an agreement with GrandTech Korea for the distribution and support of the Visor line of handheld computers in Korea. "Korea is a very important market for the IT and consumer electronics industry and therefore an excellent opportunity for Handspring. We anticipate strong demand for the full range of Visors and Springboard expansion modules,'' said Bill Holtzman, a Handspring VP. -PR

What Happened to Developers' Nation?

Developers' Nation, the third party website that offers support services for Palm OS developers, is undergoing a crisis. The site currently has only the statement "Regretfully, Developers' Nation is no longer able to provide service" and a link to PalmOS.com. However, according to PalmStation, the site has been hacked and infected with the sadmind/IIS worm.

Large Companies Standardize on the Palm OS

A new, independent survey of Fortune 1000 companies indicates that a majority of the respondents selected the Palm OS as a handheld platform of choice for their standards lists.

The survey, conducted by the Winn Technology Group, found that 57% of the 585 companies who responded and who have a handheld standard have chosen Palm Powered devices as their exclusive handheld computer.

Blue5 to Debut Soon

TDK Systems is going to release the Blue5 by the end of this month. This is a snap-on Bluetooth attachment that will work with the Palm V and Vx. When a Bluetooth link is established to a GPRS mobile phone, the Palm will be connected to the Internet at a maximum speed of 44 kBit (fixed connection). TDK Systems is expected to offer the Blue5 at about $200.

Quickies: PPK Driver, PalmTracker, #palmchat Giveaway

There is a new software version 1.5 for the Palm Portable Keyboard driver available for download on Palm's Support site. This upgrade is recommended for all PPK users with Palm III, V, VII, m100, and m500 series handhelds. -bj

Rumor: Palm Going to Pick Intel Instead of Motorola

It has long been known that Palm's next operating system, OS 5.0, will run on chips using ARM technology. The big question is, who will make those chips. The big candidates are Motorola with its next generation Dragonball chips or Intel with its XScale ones. According to recent rumors, Palm is currently leaning towards XScale.
