Methanol Fuel Cells the Batteries of the Future?

According to a new study, methanol fuel cells will be in widespread use to power electronic devices in the next few years. They will first be available in 2002, with 50,000 units being sold, but by 2007 over 200 million units will be sold. Palm's Annual Report Gives Hints of the Future

Palm has filed their fiscal year 2000 annual report with the SEC. It reveals some interesting things about Palm's plans for the future and confirms a few others.

To no one's surprise, sales of their handhelds still make up the lion's share of their revenues. They predict that licensing the Palm OS and their wireless Internet access service (Palm.Net) will make up a "relatively small portion of our total revenues" in FY 2001, though they predict an increasing percentage will come from these in the future.

Palm Powered Sony Handhelds Now Named CLIE

Sony's soon to be released handhelds with the Palm OS have aquired a group name: CLIE, which stands for Communication Linkage for Information & Entertainment. Their advertising material, which is all still in Japanese, has the CLIE acronym all over it. Even if you can't read Japanese, some of their little digrams of people using their CLIE handhelds are so cute, you should check them out anyway.

Palm Sales Down Dramatically

OneChannel.net has posted a report showing that, in the second quarter of this year, retail sales of Palm's handhelds were down 45% from the first quarter. They chalk this up to supply shortages and competition from Handspring. One side effect of this is Handspring having the best selling PDA in June.

Also, they say that the "average selling price increased from $249 at the beginning of Q2 to a record high for the year of $323 in the final week of Q2. " This seems to show that demand for Palm's products remains high.
