Has Palm Brainwashed You?

In a recent CNET interview, Ben Waldman, the vice president of Microsoft's mobile devices group, accused Palm of brainwashing people so that they didn't notice that Palm's "Keep it Simple" philosophy is really just a ploy to allow Palm to sell handhelds without a lot of function. As he put it, "the definition of simple just happens to equal the capabilities they want to put in their device."

Do you agree with this? Has Palm tricked you into buying a handheld that is under powered? Would the Palm platform be improved by adding a lot more features and CPU power? Your comments are welcome.

This related Wall Street Journal article talks about Palm's work competing with Microsoft.

Quickies: Color WAP, Coola Holidays

WAPman Color
EdgeMatrix has launched WAPman Color, the world's first color WAP microbrowser for the PalmOS. It also supports a breakthrough technology that allows location-based services, where the PDA can determine its geographic location, and multilingual applications.

Coola Holidays
You can now transfer a complete holiday calendar to your Palm datebook in one easy click. Most importantly it is FREE! Just go to the Coola Web site or click on the Coola image to the right. If you aren't already a Coola user, you will need to install the app.

Save Space with a Half Keyboard

An interesting new idea for text input is the Half Keyboard for Palm, which is exactly what it sounds like. You type the left hand keys normally and you hold the spacebar down to switch the keys to the right hand ones. Both sets are labeled on the keys. You can enter text with one hand while drawing diagrams with the other. It isn't much bigger than the Palm itself, and will be available next year for US$99.

Use AvantGo to View Your Files

NetDocuments has announced a new service that allows AvantGo users to access their documents directly from their Palm. Selected files from your NetDocuments folders can be viewed and read while on the go. The original documents are reformatted into HTML on the fly and sent to your Palm via the AvantGo service. Up to 40 different file formats can be used, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Corel WordPerfect files, image files, Web pages, and many more.

Quickies: m100 Add-on Pics, French & German for TRGpro

MP3 Player Pictures of m100 Accessories
One of the PUGs got a nice demo of the m100 and a ton of upcoming add-ons. They took pictures of the Palm m100, some color covers, cases, the cradle, a modem, and even an MP3 player! -Robert Zach

TRGpro
French and German language versions of Palm OS 3.5 are available for the TRGpro. Both versions of the OS are available as free downloads from the TRGpro Web site.

Digital Fiction is currently working on "Race Fever", a Formula One Racing simulator for the Palm including the choice of many different cars, up to 24 opponents, and even racing your friend though IR. A trial version is available now with the final version in September.

ARCHON
FreeFall Associates and EmperoR Studios have released the Palm version of ARCHON which boasts all of the original features and even the original artwork from the classic game. It features a mixture of strategy and action in a medieval chessboard setting. A demo is available with the full version going for $10.

Digital TV Impeding Wireless Web

The New York Times ran an article late this week about the sad state of the wireless Internet in the U.S. Surprisingly, the number one problem preventing its growth is digital television.

New Palm m100 Backup Solution

With the announcement of the m100 Palm also indicated that several snap-on devices would be available shortly. Well, here's the first one I have found; the MemorySafe by Northstar Mobile.

MemorySafe is a 1" square plug-in device that connects directly to the serial port of a Palm m100, Palm III series, or Palm VII series. After you install their driver, you can move individual files or backup your entire Palm, if you have enough room. There is a 2 MB version for $50 and an 8 MB version for $65.

Tip: You Can Buy Palm m100 Without Preordering!

I have searched far and wide and for those of you who want the new Palm m100, I can tell you where to get it. I was skeptical at first but now I'm convinced. Seeing that palm had it backordered, I was wondering where I could get the m100. I searched everywhere. I found that the Circuit City online store has it. I called to make sure they have it in stock. The rep assured me they did. I even told him that it was backordered everywhere. So I went ahead and placed the order, after all if it was backordered I could cancel it. So I ordered it, and about 1 hour later, I checked the account and low and behold the product has been shipped and I have a tracking number from FedEx. So if you want it now and you don't want to wait for everyone else to get it. Go to www.circuitcity.com. Happy shopping!

PayPal to Discontinue Palm OS Support

The following is an e-mail sent to all users of the PayPal app for the Palm:
We wish to inform you that X.com will be discontinuing support of the PayPal software for Palm and Handspring organizers approximately three weeks from now. With the growth of wireless Internet applications and the rapid spread of web-enabled PDAs, we feel that we can best serve our customers by focusing on the creation of new features for our wireless payments platform.
The PayPal app allowed Palm users to beam money back and forth and have the amount either added or subtracted from their PayPal accounts.

StarOffice for the Palm

In an article about Sun trying to find new markets for StarOffice, CNET casually dropped in passing that Sun is intending to make a version for the Palm. Their plan is similar to Microsoft's .Net strategy, with the majority of the app hosted by an Application Service Provider (ASP) and only a small client on the Palm. While this allows a full-functioned app to be located in the tight confines of a Palm, it also means the app may not be able to do anything when it doesn't have a connection to the ASP.
