Comments on: Yankowski Uses CES Keynote to Demo eWallet

Carl Yankowski, Palm CEO, used his keynote address Saturday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to demonstrate his company's eWallet initiative. Palms can already hold photographs and eventually, Yankowski wants Palms to be able to carry a driver's license, health-care card and other personal identification documents.

He sees a future when Palm users can use the infrared port to automatically keep financial records, receive eCoupons, get automatic prompts about personally relevant entertainment or purchases, and always know the status of their loyalty programs, like airline mileage or hotel stays.

But the most important thing that goes in a wallet is money and the eWallet isn't any different.

Another boring speech rife with rhetoric! Good god, can't Yankowski get some new material? "We are continuing to bring user centric elegance to consumers"..."simplicity and elegance through design" WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN!?!

When are we ever going to see the much hyped "next generation" Palm devices? I'm tired of this same song and dance routine from Yankowski. He uses colorful words to mask the fact that his company really doesn't have any exciting new devices, and this platform is becoming a little archaic. The only thing new from his speech was when he drove out onto the stage in a VW Beetle. That was pretty much the only excitement I got from the event.

Get your head out of your ass Carl! Forget the damn speeches, and show me some innovations!

seem cool

This sounds like great technology, but they did not relly answer when it would become available. I think that it is unlikely that this soft of thing will catch on untill the point of sale machine come STANDARD with a compatible IR port and soft/firmware. Untill then, not enough people have Palm devices to make it worth any time or money to retailers.

Is Palm screwing software developer?

I asked Illium Software, developer of eWallet 2.0, to comment on Palm's use of the term eWallet. Ellen Craw, General Manager for Illium Software responded: "While we certainly hope to work with Palm, Inc. on their electronic wallet implementation, the software mentioned by Palm CEO Carl Yankowski is not our eWallet product. We do have a registered trademark on Ilium Software eWallet, but the term "eWallet" alone is considered generic, so anyone can use it as part of their product name."
