Comments on: Wireless Palm VIIx Price Reduction

If you have been holding off buying the Palm VIIx at $450 because you were waiting for the first price drop, your wait is over; It is available now for $400. This is the first price drop for the 8 MB wireless Palm since it was released in mid-August.

This is sure to set off a round of speculation among Palm watchers. Is Palm reducing the price because interest in the VIIx is waning? Or are they preparing to introduce a new model at $450? Or is it simply that the VIIx is five months old so they can't justify a "premium" price anymore?

Palm VIIx price reduction

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/21/2001 3:15:37 PM #
Don't you know that the PALM VII series has been in scarce supply because of the industry-wide shortage of flash memory?

PALM has not been able to sell as many VII's as they would like because of the shortage. In their recent 2nd quarter teleconference call they stated that they have finished with a re-design of The PALM VII series so they can qualify a new supplier. They mentioned that the PALM VII family will be finally be available in mass after January 15th and at that date, they would begin to aggressively promote the VII family---something they have not been able to do since the debut of the PALM VII and the PALM VIIx. The $50 price break is simply a way of them promoting the product. They will follow up with additional print and media as well as in-store and Point-of-sale advertising.

Just a side note, Palm's CEO, Carl Yankowski, mentioned during the concerence call that one of his major frustrations since he took the helm at PALM in December 1999, had been the company's inability to provide unlimitted amounts of Palm VII series products in order to grow their "content & access" business.....well now he got his wish.... NICE JOB CARL!!

Are you sure about all that? The VII, and now the VIIx are like....the only two models I always see sitting on shelves.

That bulls shit! The VII has been in short supply. No electronics stars could sell the damn think because of the Flash memory shortage. Why do you think they sign on AMD to be their exlusive supplier of flash memory ships til 2003?

The Palm VII has been in deep shortages since the family was introduced. If you saw PALM VIIx at your local electrontics, you probably failed to ask the sales person if any were in stock.... because 9 times out of ten the sales person would tell you that they have none in stock. Here is an excerpt from PALM's 2nd quarter conference call with the investment community:

"Our Content & Access revenue still primarily reflects subscription revenue from our Palm.NetTM service. Subscribers to the Palm.Net service grew 23% sequentially from 121,000 at the end of Q1 to 149,000 at the end of Q2. Recall that last quarter we indicated that sales of our Palm VIIx handheld would be constrained this quarter due to a shortage of two sole-sourced radio frequency components. Because of these and other component shortages over the past year, we have not aggressively marketed the Palm VII family almost since its inception. We have now completed a redesign of the Palm VIIx handheld in order to qualify a new supplier for the latest component shortages. The components are expected to be available in the second half of fiscal Q3, and at that time, we plan to begin aggressively marketing the integrated wireless Palm VIIx handheld."

Oh please!!!

Who the hell do you think your fooling? Palm VII's have NEVER been in short supply. In fact, they are on record as the poorest selling handhelds ever produced by Palm, followed by the IIIc. Retail stores that are located outside Palm.net coverage areas can't even move the things out the door! Now your trying to tell me that a Palm VII is a "hard to find" item. Phhh, yah right.

Your obviously a Palm employee spreading a load of shit to boost sales. Try again sparky!

1. The poster made a statement and backed it up with the record. You state that "it's on record," but you don't provide the reference. So which of you should we believe, eh?
2. The fact that the Palm VII is not selling well is not inconsistent with being unable to find it for sale. If they don't sell well, stores won't order them, and you won't find them in stock.

So try backing up what you say and give a little thought to the matter before you start cursing and flaming people.

Wake Up!!!!!!!

Come on........This happens with Palm and everyone else.....Spring is just around the corner and so are a few new models.....They always drop the price when a new model is due out soon......

Also.....I was on the phone with Palm support two days ago and the tech rep. said there was a V Color due out soon...

Color Vx Coming

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2001 7:48:51 AM #
i think they are going to release the Vc at $449 so they had to reduce the VIIx.

Give me a break. The introduction of the Vc would in no way cause a price reduction in the VIIx.
Now, if they were to release a VIIc......

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2001 1:58:59 PM #
The largest selling point to the V series is its "professional" look with its super slim design. The IIIC is a fat model that could never possibly look or feel or weigh anything like the V series.

If there ever is a color V series unit, it won't look like a V, or if it does, it'll be just as thick as the IIIC and the point of the slim design will be lost because people thought color was necessary on a V.

Palm has no immediate plans for the release of a Vc model. Trust me.

the folks at Palm are hardware wizards.

When I spoke to Palm on the phone last week I was told that the Vc will be out in March and to check back in Feb to see if they were taking pre-orders.

Actually, Palo Alto Products are the hardware wizards. They designed most of the palm hardware including the original Pilot, Palm III & Palm VII. And about the V, that wasn’t Palm either.
Don’t feel bad. Most products are designed by third parties.

The Palm V (along with the Visor line (including Springboard mechanical and electrical design, and the IMac) was designed by IDEO. IDEO was also responsible for the mechnical engineering of the flat battery used on the Palm V.

price reduction on Palm VIIx

cajunagent @ 1/23/2001 1:46:03 AM #
I was told by a Palm rep recently that a color Palm V will be released in the first quarter of this year. He was unsure of a possible Palm VII in color.Has anyone heard anything regarding a possible VIIc?

Um, there are no plans for the release of a Vc at all. Who the hell did you think you were talking to? Obviously no one at Palm who actually knows whats going on.

Palm VIIx - $399 not... try $314

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2001 9:45:19 AM #
I just bought mine from overstock.com, it's the franklin planner edition of the VIIx (comes with their software bundled with it -- supposedly $150 additional value -- but that's another story). They have them for $329, but if you click the little ad on the right of the opening page for $15 off (I think it ends soon though), your total is $314 with the free shipping offer. Sign up for a year at the $24.95 or higher palm.net service and get another $100 off in the form of a rebate. This is the cheapest I've see the VIIx anywhere.
