Comments on: Quickies: $60 GPS, $150 SoundsGood, Fast Spreadsheets, PalmBot, VII Upgrades

The Rand McNally StreetFinder GPS for the Palm III is now an amazing $60. It was originally $170. It comes with three CDs of StreetFinder Deluxe software (U.S. maps only), an in-car cigarette lighter charger, a car mount, and a carrying bag. According to one reader, registering on their site reduces the price an additional 20%. Better hurry; these are going to go fast. -Ed

The SoundsGood Springboard MP3 player is now only $150 from PalmGear, down from $250. It has 64 MB of memory letting it store more than an hour of music and comes with earbud headphones.

It begins...

The natural order of economics is that when new products are introduced, old products decrease in price. This is a good thing so long as the old products remain functional, so it's a good thing for us Palm III users, at least for a couple of years.

Witness the drop in price for the Palm IIIxe(if you can still find one), a superior unit to the m105, The existence of the m105, with its embedded OS3.5, guarantees IIIxe users that our Palms will remain functional for a while. What's more, existing III-series peripherals will decline in price, and there are sure to be a handful of other that will be introduced, but also at lower prices.

I guess patience really does pay off...

Here's hoping that accessories for other non-"Universal Connector" Palm devices drop in price as well. I've been wanting to get a PalmV modem, but that thing is WAY overpriced and just about NEVER goes on sale. For that matter, barely anything for the PalmV series ever goes on sale. What's up with that?

Palm V modems.

I saw them on sale at Staples (Office supply store) for $50/ea. They had at least a half-dozen of them on the table. Check in your area.

Really? The PalmV modem? I've seen the old PalmIII modems on sale all over the place, but never the V-series modem. I'll look into it, though.

Thanks for the Heads-up!

Just ordered one. I has thinking of buying one of the GPS jobs some time ago, but couldn't justify the $170. $60 is worth it.

staples

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/29/2001 7:20:26 PM #
my local staples has them for $55
great deal
too bad my palm doesn't much room left for maps!! oh well

API?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/29/2001 9:52:32 PM #
I checked their site but couldn't see any mention of an API. What I'd like to do is some data collection with it (e.g. mapping park trails). I can write the software if there's an API to let me query the GPS. It's a serial protocol so I doubt that it's very complicated. Anyone know if this can be done? Thanx.

But is it worth even $50?

Before you run out and get one, you might want to check the consumer reviews on sites like Amazon.com.

Several people have reported problems acquiring satellite signals, buggy software, hard resets, etc.

fyi, checking staples.com shows that the PalmV GPS version is available for around $70.

TRG Pro?

Russ @ 3/30/2001 10:00:25 PM #
Anyone know whether Streetfinder GPS is compatible with the TRG Pro?

Not for Mac

Will the GPS for the PalmŪ III work on a M100? If anyone knows please tell me.

Sorry, it will not. It requires the Palm to be shaped exactly like the III series.

GPS for Palm III series at $47.99

Rossman @ 4/2/2001 7:49:07 PM #
I have the Palm GPS from Rand McNally and it works like a dream. Save going to the store. I have them for 47.99 plus shipping. Look at http://www.pdacontrols.com - Half way down page on left is the link. Follow the link, register with Rand McNally (FREE), order and your on the way to points known.... I have found this unit to be accurate enough to show me parked behind my house on the map in reference to the street. Pretty darn good I say for the $50.00 - Heck for $150 I would be happy. What do you think? The 3CD Map software alone is worth the money. Exporting maps to the Palm is just an added feature. The GPS UNIT is a gift as I see it. Good luck and happy motoring.
