Comments on: Sony Officially Announces PEG-N710C

Though they are a bit late to the party, Sony officially launched the new Clié today. Their announcement does make official some of the details that were only speculation before. The N710C will use Palm OS 3.5.2S running on a 33MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processor with 8MB of memory. It has a 4MB flashable ROM. The Clié is 2.88 x 4.75 x 0.69 inches and weighs 5.7 ounces. A lithium-ion polymer battery powers it. The N710C will be available at retailers nationwide in June for $500 and can be pre-ordered beginning today at SonyStyle.

Not quite there

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:27:34 AM #
There is no mention of VFS support. It seems that memory stick is still used only for storage. And I don't think that PowerLauncher or any other programs are as good as an integrated OS feature.

Sony was always really bad with releasing patches or any other support for Clie. I don't think this will change.

RE: Not quite there
bcombee @ 5/1/2001 12:02:24 PM #
VFS in Palm OS 4.0 is based on the extension work that Sony did on the original Clie. If an application correctly checks for VFS being present, it should work on the Palm OS 3.5 Sony devices with Memory Sticks.

RE: Not quite there
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:15:27 PM #
VFS support is already there. You can load up apps that use VFS and it will read memory stick content automatically.

This can be verified by any other PalmOS developer with early CLIE's.

Here's your confirmation:

http://www2.pdabuzz.com/Forums/showthread.php?threadid=16373&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Scott from Red Mercury tested PalmReader on the Clie2 and was able to run the app off the MemoryStick (presumably via some auto-move capability) and was also able to read a doc directly off of the memory stick (without having to move or auto-move it to main memory)

MS Mount is a vert powerful tool for clie
I put more than 20mb e-book & dictionary in MS and use MS Mount to mount into my clie
It can be accessed directly without copy to ram first
MS Mount + PowerLauncher is the best choice for those people who need more than 8mb of memory

Could someone enlighten me as to why Sony's support is so bad concerning the CLIE? I've never heard so many bad things about their VAIO support, so what is wrong them with the CLIE? Thanks...

Metrics people, metrics!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:32:19 AM #
I don't get it. When will the greater part of America realise that the metrics-system is vastlu superiour anything else they got to meassure with?

The metrics system. Using standard decimals (based on 10) rather than the utterly ludicris fractionsystem they use for the inches and feet or whatever.

The metricsystem is clearly the way to go in the future!

Not that this has anything to do with the article....
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:36:14 AM #
I just wrote it when I was utterly annoyed by the fact that I could not at all grip what the line

"The Clie is 2.88 x 4.75 x 0.69 inches and weighs 5.7 ounces."

really is telling...
Oh well... At least it uses decimals...

But still, metrics is the way to go!

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:37:56 AM #
When we were considering whether to switch to the Metric System, we did a bit of research and discovered that the metric system had been invented by the French. After a bit more research, we discovered that the French stink. As we didn't want to have anything to do with anything that stinks, we immediately dropped the Metric system.

Metric system is indeed superior. And it would save the US billions of dollars a year. Buy *YOU* try to get 300 million people to change the way they think and do things!

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
Ed @ 5/1/2001 11:47:08 AM #
It could have been worse. Sony listed the dimensions as 2 7/8" (W) x 4 3/4" (H) x 11/16" (D).

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:49:00 PM #
Metrics would cost money. I agree that some things are easier with metrics, but things like building codes are written in inches. Wall studs and all sorts of building things are measured in inches. What.. are we supposed to have two building standards? Or retrofit the old buildings?

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:49:11 PM #
Of course it is. I use a homebrewed kind of mixed up language containing all sorts of bad grammatic, errors and misstakes.

But that's just the way I am, and I come from sweden, a country where we have metrics...

And if you wish to change system, a goog starting-point would probably be the education.

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:54:41 PM #
But you should now, the most of my spelling misstakes comes from me slipping over the keys a bit to fast, without really thinking before submitting...

You don't know how to spell. And we should take your advice on weights and measures? I have a feeling this is a frenchman posing as a swede anyway.

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
EdwardGreen @ 5/1/2001 6:33:44 PM #
Well in the UK we use a mixture of metric and imperial units, although our imperial units are different to the US ones. We have Stone for weight (14lbs in a Stone) and Beer is served by the Pint.

Miles are used for speed and distance, but most architectural and engineering stuff is done in mm, m and km (not cm they are EVIL!) ...

Under EU law most stuff has to be sold in metric measures, which sucks, because we all know what a lb of potatoes looks like, but are pretty clueless when it comes to Kg.

-
kHiTeDev

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 6:50:01 PM #
Strange. I would be very confused if I was asked if I wanted to buy 10 lb of potatoes. On the other hand, I know exactly how much 10 kg of potatoes is.

But I very much think you could keep the pint, when it comes to beer as a pint is never wrong.

By the way. I may not spell good, but on the whole that doesn't really matter now does it? Most people can still understand me perfectly, and I them, but when it comes yo meassures, I have absolutley no clue about anything other than metric meassures.
Ok, there are around three feet to the meter and circa 25 mm to the inch (and it might be 13 inches per foot) but this is not at all exact, and probably down right wrong too. Plus all the calculations I have to preform in my head to get some sence of perspective.

And it's not getting any better when things like oz, lb, gal, cup, pt, qt, tbsp, tsp, ft3, yd, mi, ton, F or whatever are mixed in.
It's not just that there are so many and so uneven values they represent, it's also that they often are different in different countries (US / UK) and, to make the matter slightly worse, even different when it comes to wheter the thing to meassure is liquid or solid...

The metric system is the ultimate solution to all thease problems, and because it is based on the decimal-system, it is also easy to calculate on.

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
atrizzah @ 5/1/2001 7:01:52 PM #
The metrics system sucks. Even if we were to switch to it, any money that could be saved would be more thann lost by the sheer number of things you would have to convert to metric.

the Metric system is the way to go. Canada brought in legislation in the early 1980's to move the country over to the metric system, and it makes WAY more sense to use it. The only morons left in the world that use the imperial system designed by some stuck-up brits based on arbitrary things is the United States and Britain, and one or two other nations. 90% of the world's nations use metric system.

hell if i know how many feet and a yard, and how many inches in a mile or yards in a mile...
switch to metric already you lazy asses!!! =)

Yeah! Let's switch to the metric system!! It will save each of us billions of dollars personally -- and then we can also stop brushing our teeth, get bad haircuts, sport ill-fitting three-piece suits, adopt the Euro, and help elect a corrupt Swedish-Canadian Earth emperor, who will bring the Age of Man to a crashing halt!!! Or maybe I'm overreacting. Meantime, can't wait for that hot new CLIE to come out! It's "vastlu superiour". In fact, all your base are belong to us.

Back in college a buddy of mine is in first quarter Physics and before the first test, the prof says, "Use whatever units you want." So my smart ass friend converts all his test answers to furlongs per fortnight. When he gets his test back, it has a note, "This was funny. Do it again and I'll give you an F."

The Sony Clie. Remember the Sony Clie? This is a discussion group about the Sony Clie.

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 6:24:15 AM #
Yes, about Clie...

You know, you could put an Unit Convertor program on your Clie (or whatever PDA) and see how many things are in other things (inches in feet, yards in miles, x in y, etc.) But you should use metrics ;)

RE: Metrics people, metrics!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 3:43:34 AM #
Frankly, the imperial system relates more to the human condition.

Humans live between 0 F and 100 F. Basing temperature around an the freezing and boiling point of a molecule under specific atmospheric pressure is just silly. When you talk about the weather, fahrenheit simply makes more sense.

A teaspoon is about the size of well.. a tea spoon.

A tablespoon is about the size of a table spoon.

A foot is about the size of a foot.

A gallon is the maximum amount of milk you'd ever want to take home. 5 gallons to a paint can.

The entire imperial system evolved to the point where we deal mostly with whole numbers and/or extremely basic fractions.

It turns out that the imperial system is extremely useful for the building industry. The size of nuts come out to be nice round fractions (1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 1/2, etc).

Miles turn out to be extremely useful when driving. The maximum speed on most roads in the US is 65 MPH which works out to about a mile per minute making timing your lane changes extremely simple. Signs are placed at 1 mile, 3/4 mile, 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile markers.

those shots look really suspect seeing that there is no type of shadowing on the edges of the screens on the clie. i would think that u would be taking snapshots of the actual clie and not superimposing a emulated image on top of the same photo.

They're from the Sony emulator. I don't think Red Mercury put the shots up there to show you what the actual screen of the Clie looks like, only to show you what the increased resolution looked like compared to the old resolution. 320x320 is amazing.

Somehow, I don't think that many people still care about HandEra. Monochrome doesn't cut it in 2001 and I'll be shocked if they sell more than a handful of these. TRG used to sell a fair amount of TRGPros to doctors back when the TRGPro was the only option if you needed to store huge amounts of data on a Palm. Now that all PDAs can do this, no-one is going to compromise display quality anymore. And guess what? For reading text, the CLIE PEG-N710C simply *destroys* the HandEra in terms of clarity. If you don't believe me, see for yourselves when both are released later this month.

I am a physician who purchases PDAs for my large multidisciplinary group practice and I think Sony has now become the best choice. It's unfortunate that HandEra was too arrogant to listen to those of us who suggested a color screen was needed. (Last year, they told me "Our customers are generally not interested in color screens".)

RE: Full Info Here
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 6:16:18 PM #
Wrong! Color is not the end-all be-all. Using the full screen on the Handera; CF/SD/MMC standardized memory and peripherals instead of proprietary memory sticks (any devices of any kind using those except Sony?), all point to a more powerful system.

RE: Full Info Here
Dwayne @ 5/6/2001 8:27:16 PM #
Reading through the Sony developer's kit, the Sony does support VFS (Virtual File System). There are many utilities (MSMount, McFile, etc) that utilize VFS which have been run successfully on both the Sony and new Palm M500/M505.

256 Color...

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 12:40:26 PM #
Is that an OS limit or a hardware limit.

In other words if you uprade to OS 4.0 can you get 16 bit color.

Allan

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 12:52:09 PM #
i think this is not a OS limit

If i remember right the Prism from Handspring can display like 16,000 some odd colors.
I find that the Clie can only have 256 rather dissapointing.
Guess i will wait another year till that gets improved.

The Clie is just almost what i want.
Put in more colors
a SD slot and a Memory stick slot
and a soft grafite area so i can have a bigger screen
and you got me.

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 12:56:38 PM #
I really don't think the 256 color thing is a problem - I was looking at the new HP 525 the other day, which has 256 colors, and it looked almost as good as the HP 548.

The reason that everyone is giving for the screen being only 256 colors is that the processor can't handle doing the increased resolution and the 64k colors at the same time.

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 1:11:57 PM #
>The Clie is just almost what i want.
> Put in more colors
> a SD slot and a Memory stick slot
> and a soft grafite area so i can have a bigger screen
> and you got me.

Actually, for me the additional feature priorities would be:
1) soft graffiti area (PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!)
2) 16-bit color (but without killing battery life or performance)
2) SD slot (Palm is standardizing on this, so I expect more developers for SD than MemStick)
I don't personally have any need for two slots, as this would just make the unit bigger.

Softer Graffit Spot
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 2:37:30 PM #
For a better, softer, and more precise graffiti spot try using a protective screen cover such as Brother's "WriteRIGHT." Personally I like the feel of this product on the Graffiti spot, but hate it on the rest of my screen so I cut them and can use them for years! If you do not feel like spending the $20 for 12 covers try using a piece of tape.

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:10:41 PM #
I don't know if you are kidding about the WriteRights making your graffiti area 'soft', but in case you are NOT kidding: what we mean by a 'soft' graffiti area is one that is drawn by SOFTWARE, instead of being silkscreened onto the screen. This allows programs to 'hide' the graffiti area and have more screen space available (esp. good for reading e-books, surfing the web, playing games, etc. -- which is the market Sony is going after, anyway...)

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:30:43 PM #
Wow... looks like someone missed the train on that one. Use WriteRights to make the graffi area 'soft'...

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 2:59:43 AM #
I have the Japanese version and LOVE IT! Sony uses an image pallet of 4000 some odd colors. Then shows the image with the best 256 colors (out of the pallet colors). The image looks INCREADIBLE!

RE: 256 Color...
neostorm @ 5/2/2001 2:07:14 PM #
You actually can't really tell the difference that much unless your sticking your nose in the screen. On such a small screen at such a high resolution the color depth looks perfectly fine at 8 bit, and put next to a Prism (with 16bit color) the Sony actually looks a bit cleaner because the colors don't bleed so much.

Probably hardware limit
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 9:41:31 PM #
I think it's probably a hardware limit because of the processor. Running high res AND over 256 colors would be too much for it. It's the same speed as the processor in the m50x, Edge, Prism, etc.

RE: 256 Color...
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/7/2001 3:59:27 PM #

From the article:
Memory Sticks
The N710C comes with an 8MB Memory Stick. It can launch preset applications directly from MemStick.

I don't quite understand this. Do they mean that one can actually run programs off of MemStick, maybe even read large databases.

RE: Any comments on this
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 3:02:45 AM #
Sonys Japanese version has the built-in dictionary version 3.6S. It runs the program off of the main unit and the dictionary files (3.5mb for 2 files) off of the Memory Stick. It workes great! The new version of MSGate (2.0) is a big improvment also!

RE: Any comments on this
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 8:47:59 AM #
I am using the same feature as well. It is great and the speed is fast. I hope more programs will be developed to support reading/writing the databases/data files off the memory stick without the need to copy the data to the device. That will save a lot of space on the device for applications.

RE: Any comments on this
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 12:03:28 PM #
sorry, but I still don't get it! if you have a 4MB dictionary/database/map on the memory stick and
you access it with an app in the main memory, does it require 4 MB RAM which are free in the main
memory? if not, how is that possible?
also, how can you write datafiles which are bigger than the 8MB Ram of the main memory (according
to Sony, only 7 MB are actually accessible) to the Memory Stick?

RE: Any comments on this
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 2:34:54 PM #
Well as I understand it: when a program is stored on the memory stick and that program is launched...the MS-gate software automatically copy the program to the Clie's internal RAM and then launch it.

However, databases that are stored in the memory are access in aa different way. I think there is a way the MS-gate allow direct access to the databases.

I believe that the way that the Clie access to the memory stick is the same method used by Palm m500 and m505 to access the SD card.

RE: Any comments on this
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 11:13:41 PM #
Ok. there is a 3rd party app called MSMount, which enable both new and old clie read large database or appz(
say 5mb naoth lite dict) directly from MS stick, without copying it to ram.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 2:19:21 PM #
I just noticed that the Clie leather cover accessory is $49, rather bulky looking, and potentially pretty awkward because of the angle it opens.

Can anyone describe the "protective cover" that comes in the Clie package?

RE: Cover
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 2:34:57 PM #
There is a picture on the sonystyle.com website. It is a simple flip down (from the top)cover. Kind of reminds me of the Vx's but comes from the top rather than the side. Others with the Japanese model have said that it has magnets on the end of the flap that help hold it down.

Click on "hardware overview" one the following link to see it:

I too am considering jumping ship and leaving the m505 for someone else. The Clie' certainly seems to be a better deal. The increased screen resolution is really desirable. MP3 is nice but of no use to me. Comes with travel charger....yes I need that ($40 extra from Palm for the m505). Jog dial....most helpful. I am very interested. I do have a question. Is the case all metal. It seems to me I read something to that effect regarding the Japanese version (N700). Can someone answer this. I really like the fact the m505 case is all metal. I also like the metal flip cover. This makes the decision very difficult. m505 on May 10 (APPROXIMATELY) or Clie' a couple weeks later?

I've been told the body is metal. The cover uses magnets to hold itself closed. I added a picture of the N710C with its cover to the article.

I have heard from Japanese sites that the magnet that used to hold the flip cover is great to hold a metal stylus as well. Maybe not the stock metal stylus of palm's but the magnet will be strong enough to hold a pentopia stylus. Just wanted to pass that on!

The new Clie body is metal on the front, plastic on the back, and the blue cover is vinal. The magnet is built into the unit body (lower left).

RE: Cover

I own an N700C and the front is metal while the back is plastic. There is a magnet just under the appointment/address buttons. It is strong enough to hold the stock stylus (I bought the Sony stylus which has a built in ball point pen which this magnet can not hold), and also strong enough to erase information from credit cards if placed too close to the Sony. Personally I think putting a magnet in the Sony itself is a rather stupid idea...

Vibrating Alarm? Memory Stick For My Computer?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 2:32:07 PM #
Now that the new Palms appear to be a bust and the Edge is only a thinner Platnium with more problems I am researching the new Clie. 2 quick questions:

(1) Does anyone know if the the new PEG-N710 has a vibrating alarm like the new Palms?

(2) Do memory sticks work in any computer/laptop?

RE: Vibrating Alarm? Memory Stick For My Computer?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:08:06 PM #
No, it doesn't have a vibrating alarm (or a flashing LED alarm, as far as I know...although maybe someone could write a hack that flashes the power LED, I don't know if that's possible)

You can buy a memory stick reader/writer from Sony (In fact, I saw one the other day that was integrated into a mouse). You will probably need a USB port free to add a MemStick reader to your laptop.

RE: Vibrating Alarm? Memory Stick For My Computer?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:15:19 PM #
you can also buy a PC card (PCMCIA) and floppy disk adapter....

RE: Vibrating Alarm? Memory Stick For My Computer?

For your laptop, Sony makes a PCMCIA adapter for Memory Sticks ($69.95). There is also Floppy Disc adapter ($79.95) plus the USB adapters mentioned above.

Write a program to add a vibrating alarm to the Clie2? Sure, then they could write an app to increase the color depth to 16-bit color, change the graffiti area to software, shrink the device to a PalmV form factor, plus add integrated wireless (GSM+CDPD+802.11+bluetooth)!

The N710C has a driver included that allows the Memory Stick to be accessed from the CLIE while in it's cradle. It appears on your PC Desktop as a Mass Storage Device.

The main purpose of this is to transfer the MP3's to the device (drag and drop), but it can be used to copy, move and delete other files and directories on the Memory Stick as well. It basically doubles as an all around Memory Stick slot for your PC.

Memory Sticks

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:22:40 PM #
Are these still just for storage, or can you run apps directly form them (not just music), like in the new Palms with SD cards? Waht about upgrading to Palm OS 4?

RE: Memory Sticks
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:34:58 PM #
Both Palm's and Sony's method of running programs from their SD card and memory stick are similar. Palm, Sony, and HandEra all have a program that automatically copy and launch a program that's stored in their card. So technically, they all CANNOT run programs directly from their SD card, memory stick, or CF card. They utilize a program that will copy the program to internal RAM and then launch it. This would make the program appear to launch directly from the storage card.

Only handspring can launch program directly off their compact flash modules.

RE: Memory Sticks
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:24:47 PM #
I think what you said about TRG/Handera is false, they are able to directly run programs off of the CF card w/o copying it to memory.

RE: Memory Sticks

MagicGate have some stupid copy protection on them too

RE: Memory Sticks
Ed @ 5/1/2001 6:23:36 PM #
Sony's MagicGate technology is intended to protect digital content. These are white, as opposed to regular Memory Sticks that are blue. MagicGate's main purpose is to allow digital content to be "moved" rather than copied.

You could think of like the difference between SD and MMC. One has copy protection and the other doesn't.

So if both the m505 and Clie work the same in terms of running apps from the expansion cards, what about Sony using OS 3.5 instead of 4.0? Can it be upgraded to 4.0, and will it affect running apps from the card?

RE: Memory Sticks
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 9:15:38 PM #
The story goes a little like this, bare with me...

When Palm began to license it OS to other manufactures like Handspring and Sony, Palm made them sign an agreement that any improvements or modifications that the licencees make on the Palm's OS would automatically channel back to Palm before anyone else can implement the new modification.

For example, Handspring was the first to modifiy the OS 3.5 enabling the support on 16-bit color. This modification immediately went back to Palm which they incorporated into the OS 4.0 and the m505.

What does that have to do with Sony? I think a prior post here mentioned that Palm's OS 4.0 support for the their SD expansion slot were based on sony's modification of the palm OS 3.5 to support the memory sticks!! This would imply that the Palm 4.0's ability to access data and programs stored in the SD slot were developed by Sony.

In other words, just as Handspring's 3.5 OS support of 16-bit color which went back to the Palm 4.0, the Sony's OS has the ability to access/read data and applications stored in the memory stick just like Palm 4.0.

Make any sense?

RE: Memory Sticks
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 5:48:56 AM #
Only a couple of programs comply with TRG's API that allows files to be read directly off the CF card.

On the other hand, their AutoCF program copies parts of the accessed programs into RAM on demand.

Audio Playback from Memory stick

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:09:32 PM #
So everything I'm reading says that you have to have the MagicGate memory stick to play ATRAC3, even on the Japanese stuff.

The US release info says it actually supports MP3 AND ATRAC3, but only mentions needing the MagicGate stick for ATRAC3. Now it is my interpritation from reading the specs on Sony's site that the you don't have to convert MP3 to ATRAC3 (Though I could be wrong). Does this mean that MP3s will play without a MagicGate stick (ie on the memory stick that ships with it)?

RE: Audio Playback from Memory stick
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:26:00 PM #
I ceratinly hope so; ATRAC3 conversion would be a pain no matter how fast it is. I can't for somone to port Winamp or another mp3 player with skin & visualization support over to the Palm OS.

RE: Audio Playback from Memory stick
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 5:33:11 PM #
From the article above:

> 8MB Memory Stick

Seems plain from this that it plays MP3 files from a Memory Stick. It doesn't come with a MagicGate MemStick, so it has to be able to play from a regular one.

Upgradable Flash Rom OS

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 9:30:17 PM #
Does anyone know if this new Clie has a software upgradable flash ROM OS like the Palm PDAs? I feel this is a major weakness in all the Handspring PDAs and makes them obsolete faster.
Regarding the reflective TFT 320 x 320 color display, I think this alone justifies making this a superior product to the Palm m505 based on reports that it has a dimely lit, hard to read display. Over half of a PDAs functionality is based on the quality of the screen and if the Sony screen is comparable to the Compaq Ipaq, which is currently the best quality screen out there, then the Clie will kick ass.
Don't call me a Sony freak either, since I have owned a US Robotics Pilot and currently own a Palm V with 2 mb of memory. Also,in general, I feel that all Palm OS based PDAs need to come with 16 mb of memory out of the box. All these great apps, specifically Avantgo, take up a lot of memory.

RE: Upgradable Flash Rom OS
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 9:40:21 PM #
I don't see why not, the clie has 4MB of flash rom so a new OS can be flash. The thing is that Sony has made significant modifications to the Palm OS 3.5, flashing a plain Palm 4.0 may not be so smart.

I own a Clie N700C and I don't get any ROM upgrade flash program from Sony. Maybe the same with N710C.

BTW, If you want to play ATRAC3 music from N700C, you must have a MagicGate Memory Stick(white card) and Memory Stick(blue card) works for data/program only.

RE: Upgradable Flash Rom OS
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:11:09 PM #
There's a big difference between being physically able to upgrade the OS and actually having anything to upgrade it to. While the CLIE has a flash rom, Sony will have to release a version of OS 4 to use it with, which they haven't done.

The N700C and N710C handle music differently. The N700C doesn't support MP3s while Sony has said the N710C will. Sony's PR seems to say that music can be played off regular Memory Sticks. I don't know why the U.S. version can do stuff the Japanese version can't but that seems to be the way it is.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 11:21:15 PM #
>There's a big difference between being physically able to upgrade the OS and

In addition to the possibility of an OS upgrade, there's also the possibility that a 3rd party app will allow you to store your own apps in Flash ROM (e.g. an upgrade to FlashPro or JackFlash)

>I don't know why the U.S. version can do stuff the Japanese version can't but

Maybe because there are so many more Napster users in the U.S. than in Japan? ;)

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 1:14:03 AM #
Ouch!!...that's kinda harsh.

Palm's new m500 and m505 ARE taking some heavy hits though. It seems like they are getting challenge from every direction. On the m500 front, the just announced HandEra is taking most of the atttention. I wonder do many people even know (or care) that the m500 is actually in stores now(I saw one at office depot), I also wonder how the m500 are selling.

On the m505 front, the Clie has just stolen its thunder. Now when the m505 does make it's debut, the Clie will be right beside it. Now I know that Palm loyalist are going to argue about the m505's form factor and the 16-bit color depth. Well, granted the Clie is a little bigger and only has 8-bit color, but it has other innovations (increase resolution, MP3 playback, jog dail, etc..) certainly outweighs the m505's slight decrease in size and richer colors. IMHO, just getting rid of those black grid-lines is enough reason for me to pick the Clie.

I suspect that once the m505 is out, people are going to be very critical of the dimness of the screen. There are articles upon articles from people that have seen a pro-production m505 and most have complained about the screen....another blow for Palm.

Just my $0.02

Oh yeah,

From past history, Sony announced the N700C in Japan and it was available by the date that they stated, I think it was three weeks post-announcement. I believe that the N710C will be available on the promised date.

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 1:42:44 AM #
Yes, Can I add a little more again.

I agree with you. Regarding availability, I am certain that Sony won't make customers to wait, or to get frustrated as Palm do with us in this m505 case.

For me, I admit that I am one who have to keep checking this board 3times a day every single day for more than a full month to check in case the m505 is available.

Look at the way they treat their loyal customers...
It's so .. ..
And now, even they already have it, they still direct Staples , OD not to make any sell at all, before May 8,

Look at the screen of Sony.
- 320*320 does matter.. and I prefer it to the 65,356? color of Palm.

- Yes, form factor really matters. 505 is thinner, Sony is narrower, thicker and longer but it's not too bad though. It's a super good trade-off for the MP3 feature! that also comes with the remote.

My prediction is that Palm, therefore, definitely will be losing this game.

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 2:05:44 AM #
I agree with the post below saying that every user has his/her own needs. I myself, am a HUGE fan of music and I find that not only is the combo CLie/128mb stick EXPENSIVE, it is also inadequate for my music needs. 128MB is at BEST 25 songs when I can take full adavantage of my CD burner and burn a whole bunch of CD-Rs to listen to on my walkman. For me, anyway, if the m505 screen is not too much dimmer than the IIIc indoors, I'm gonna make the jump.

The clie is just too expensive to cover my music needs. $499 for the machine and at least $100 for a memory stick with at LEAST 64 MB (which doesn't even hold a CD's worth of stereo quality music). That for me is enough to nullify the mp3 advantage of the Clie. Screen looks nicer than m505 but I'm not paying an extra $50 for the screen!

Anyway, just my thoughts...

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 10:30:13 PM #
Well I guess you have to look at it this way:

In very rough estimates:

Clie+128MB memory stick= m505 + MP3 player + 128MB card.

now translate that into $$

$500 + ~$150 = $450 + ~$150 + ~$75

Clie w/ memory stick= ~$650-$700
m505 plus MP3 player plus storage= ~$675-$700

Alway the price of the Clie with a 128MB is roughly about the same as the m505 plus a descent MP3 player and 128MB storage card.

The above didn't even consider that 320x320 resolution, brighter screen, no grid-lines, memory stick support with other Sony prodcts, and the all in one design.

Is the Clie worth it? IMHO, I think so!!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 11:55:03 PM #
You are absolutely right with your formula, your numbers, and your calculation.

What's wrong with your comment is that

1. why you assume that everyone would buy 128MB just like you want to ??
For me, I like its MP3 audio feature. and I don't think that I will buy 128MB memory stick for the current price. But the 64MB seems to be a good, reasonable choice for me.

2. For u, u might want to carry both Palm and MP3 feature with you wherever with you all the time. Just carry both gadgets in your big pocket in your pants.

For me, I prefer to carry one. I won't listen to MP# all the time. but I will do when I have a mood. And I don't to have hassle carrying both.

3. Not to mention a much better screen.etc.

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 1:40:09 AM #
Wait a minute, I was making a point FOR the Clie. My pick of memory stick was based on the post above mine that argued that a 128MB was too expensive. I was merely illustrating that even with the memory stick the cost of the clie was comparible to the cost of the m505 and a MP3 player.

I was trying to point out that the poster above mine that claimed that the Clie was too expensive do not have a valid arguement.

I'm glad that you agree with my calculations.

Your argument is fine if you assume that mp3's are the only way to listen to music. Personally, I will take the m505 for $450 and burn endless CDs and play those on the Discman I already have. No need to dish out extra bucks for an mp3 player and certainly not for a memory stick/card.

Alternate calculation:

HandEra 330: 350
Rio Volt: 150

For $500 you get 650 meg of mp3 playback on each mp3 cd- in the same form factor as the Sony- with increased screen resolution and voice recording- and better battery life all round...

two devices??? Ever thought of that? It's a completely different game then. So, your argument
is not valid because the requirements for usage are different.
Now, Clie+MemoryStick is still a hefty price. but the fair comparison would be with a Handspring
model + mp3 player. As far as I know, the clie+memory stick would be more expensive but it would
not only offer more (color, high-res, etc.) but you can have multiple memory sticks with different
capacities whereas you are stukc with e.g. 64 MB with the Soundsgood MP3 player module.
And correct me if I am wrong, but are there mp3 players for Palm m505 or the HandEra?

RE: Clearly, Palm is the loser. I will go for Sony
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2001 9:43:52 AM #
You're not willing to pay a measly $50 for 4 times improvement in screen resolution?!? If you ever get the chance to compare an N710C in high resolution mode (which the majority of legacy apps can run in) as compared to the stock Palm resolution, you would have to be Mr Magoo blind not to be able to notice or appreciate the difference. And as compared to the 65k colors which one would only notice the difference in a scant number of programs, the increased resolution makes itself known in practically every Palm program you have.

Surely, one buys what he thinks it fits him most but Dude, this is a board and I have right to speak my opinion. Whatever you plan to buy won't be changed by my words.

or u are expecting to hear only good things about Palm?

Next time, close your ears (or don't read) if truth (or my opinion) hurts you that much.

Only 4MB Flash ROM?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 7:15:33 AM #
I read that N710C will only have 4MB of flash ROM, while N700C has 8MB. Is it true? Then why don't we buy N700C and update it with N710C ROM? It should give 4MB more free ROM to place apps, and I think it's better than 8MB Memory Stick (with $50 price difference). Also, if the MP3 support is from the OS (I think), not built into the hardware, then I can play MP3 too on N700C.

What do you think guys?

RE: Only 4MB Flash ROM?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 9:42:17 AM #
From what I am reading the Sony has 4MB of Flash ROM, 8MB of built in memory AND the 8 MB memory stick. Therefore even without a memory stick in it the Clie will still have 8MB of memory for addresses, etc.

RE: Only 4MB Flash ROM?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 9:58:15 AM #
Apparently, the Japanese Clie has 8mb of flash rom because it is needed to running the Japanese language palm OS. The Japanese characters requires a lot more MB's.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 4:25:42 PM #
From what I've heard, the audio playback for the MP3 format is done through the 710 hardware. I don’t think the 700 is capable of playing MP3. Someone please chime in with more specific information.

Sarah @ 7/18/2001 1:59:13 AM #
I recently bought a N710C it is a 8MB Rom. I have used it for about a month already and one problem I found is that last night I was playing a game until the battery completely died out. It turns out that this morning when I charge it up in my office, all the data has been cleaned out. It did a hard reset by itself and even the mp3 songs in my memory stick are gone. I will have to say that this is a terrible problem, just like the Win CE

Sony to Mike Cane: You liar!

mikecane @ 5/2/2001 10:03:40 AM #
I am glad to see that Sony is releasing the new CLIE in the US and has granted us the ability to play *native* unencrypted and unconverted MP3s on it. This is wonderful! I am now thinking I have been hasty in considering moving to the Palm m505. A higher-res screen with MP3 is a great combo.

As for the article I did about Sony abandoning the US market ... never mind!

On the other hand, current mono CLIE owners are besides themselves because Sony has apparently dropped all prior mono CLIE content from their site!

Take a hike, you troll. We're sick of seeing your posts chock full of rumors you create and attempt to spread. Sony should sue your ass for all of the BS posts you've made about them.

What to buy (Vx, M500, M505, or the new Sony)?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 12:59:48 PM #
I need a new PDA and have recently become obsessive/compulsive in my quest for the "ultimate organizer." Essential to me are size, dependability (I had a Visor with constant problems), and a hard case. I depend on my PDA as an organizer (phone numbers, addresses, and schedules) first and foremost, but also enjoy AvantGo, looking at pictures, and a few games. Now that it is possible to listen to MP3s without purchasing a separate module, the new Clie is attractive. Basically I guess I have it between the Palm Vx, M500, M505 (if the screen is ok), or the new Clie. As I am sure that many are in a similar position, I was hoping to start a discussion of which product truly is the best, for now. Any comments concerning user opinions are greatly appreciated.

RE: What to buy (Vx, M500, M505, or the new Sony)?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 1:55:15 PM #
You must have obsessive/compulsive disorder as you posted your message twice! Anyways its like this:
Vx = outdated and greenish display, M500 = the right choice (comes with DocsToGo, better display, longer battery, upgradable, vibrating alarm, really small, BUT it is mostly plastic), M505 = poor color version of the M500 probably not worth $50 more, New Clie = to expensive if you actually want to use MP3s. This is just my take, take it for what its worth!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 3:11:37 PM #
everything has its own unique feature, but id probaly have to go with the sony myself, just because i love tthe sony brand and am very loyal to it, and also because i have an memory stick walkman already, so i dont need to buy a new memory stick, but comparing it to the others the screen i feel is better, and thats what i like the most about the sony, i have a palmvx right now and i love it, and i was very excited when i first heard about the 505, but i love music so i have to go with the sony, but remeber the 505 is gonna be more compatible with other companys, with their sd slot, but then again sony has said that they have many companys working memory stick add ons, and applications

playing music

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 7:53:02 PM #
can you play music at the same time your doin other stuff on the palm,or can you only do one at a time,

RE: playing music
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2001 10:25:03 PM #
Unfortunately, music can only be played as a function by itself, you can't work other palm operations.

RE: playing music
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 12:26:33 PM #
there are numerous posts on various discussion boards by people who actually use already a Clie
which describe that you can use other Palm apps while listening to music. If I remember correctly
Sony's website states the same.

RE: playing music
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 3:53:52 AM #
Yes, I've tried it in a store in Japan. Music is playing smoothly while you are using the other apps of the N700C.

RE: playing music
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2001 2:32:11 PM #
I just got the chance to play with a demo model of the US version. It does allow you to listen to music while working in other apps, with no quality issues either. Personally I find the headphones a little uncomfotable, (they always feel like they're going to fall off) but it may just take getting used to. One other thing while I'm at it, the screen is simply amazing, even with the back light off. With the brightness all the way up and the back light on, the thing could probably be used as a small flashlight! :)
The only drawback I can see is size. If you like the size of the Palm V series, then the 710 is going to look like a brick. On a flat table, it sits even higher than the orginal Clie, and seemed a fraction longer. I guess it's to be expected with all it's new features.
Overall I'm very impressed with the 710, but it's size makes it a difficult hands down winner for me. I'll have to wait till I can get a M505 to play with to see if I can live with the lower res.

Mossberg's WSJ review of New Clie

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 3:40:14 PM #
Walt Mossberg, feature writer of personal technology for the Wall Street Journal, reviewed the new Clie today. Famous for his scathing review of the M505 ("dim, dark and dull"), Mossberg described the Clie as having a "... bright, vivid color display that is better than any of the others I've seen from Palm or Handspring.."

He was not impressed with the high price or the high cost of actually using the MP3 capability (either in expensive memory sticks or battery life). He was so impressed with the high res screen that he thought it was worth the high cost.

You can read the article at this link:

This is such great news! I read the earlier review decided to go ahead with plans on getting the M505. I got the M505 yesterday at OD. I couldn't agree more with Mossberg's M505 review. For the price I can't believe the quality of the Palm color screen is so poor. I am definately returning it, and waiting the for the N7100's release. I hope that Sony releases on thier expected ship date and don't keep us hanging like Palm did.

Stylus / Remote

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2001 11:33:27 PM #
I have seen that the remote doubles as a stylus for the new Sony. Does this remote/stylus tuck away in the machine? I must assume it does to make travel easier. But, you know they say if you assume you make an ass of u and me.

RE: Stylus / Remote
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2001 9:53:05 AM #
On the N700C, there is no way to 'attach' the headphone remote to the N700C body itself.

Nothing Else Can Compare

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 10:01:38 PM #
For the user who wants it all, nothing can compare to the new Sony. It is just about as small as the M500s, much better color than the M505, and has MP3 capability. Even though the memory sticks are a ripoff, (1) you do not need to use the MP3 capabilites and (2) even money is tight then buy the unit in June and wait a month to pay the $100+ for a memorystick with real memory.

Side note, I wish Sony would include a deal where you could buy the Clie and upgrade the stick for a discounted price. The memorystick it comes with seems useless, except for backup. Who wants a stick that can hold 2 songs with decent quality?

All in all, nothing can compare with what Sony is offering. I consider myself a Palm traditionalist, but admit that the superior color screen is tempting and MP3 capability does not hurt.

Turned it in!

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/24/2001 11:09:46 PM #
Well, I bought a Sony! It was just lovely. Until I noticed how flimsly the contruction. And . . . frankly, the process of transfering multimedia files was just too complicated.

I hate to say it folks, but I returned it and bought a iPAQ 3760 for the price of a Sony and a 64 meg flash card. Its waaaaaaaaaaay better.

Goodbye Palm!
