Comments on: Sony Releases Details on U.S. Version of New Clié

Though there hasn't been an official announcement yet, Sony has posted the full details on a U.S. version of the new color Clié on its SonyStyle website. Named the PEG-N710C, it is essentially the PEG-N700C except with an English version of the Palm OS. It has a front lighted, reflective TFT color screen at 320x320 resolution and a Jog Dial. It has 8 MB of memory and comes with an 8 MB Memory Stick. It will cost $500 and will be available May 28.

Sony Clie

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/29/2001 11:04:48 PM #
The new Sony will be avialable on 5/28/01. If you add it to your wishlist it says product avialable on that date.
Any opinions on which is better, M505 or the new Clie?

RE: Sony Clie
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/29/2001 11:09:45 PM #
Kinda depends on opinion of what is important to you....for me form factor is important and then I can add-on accessories from there. However, w/ questions about the m505...might be a good idea to buy the palm from a retailer w/ a good return policy so that once the Sony comes out that you can return the palm if you are not happy and pick up the Sony until w/ no PDA downtime. That way you can demo both and then make a decision.

well, m505 is still MIA everythere.....

Hope N710 can keep its promise...

RE: M50x brings nothing new
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 4:02:28 AM #
In compare with Clie, M50x bring nothing new.

Clie has:
- ATRAC encoder (like MP3 player)
- remote control
- 320x320 double pixeling screen which really looks bloody cool
- headset included ;)
- much better design
- jogdial button
- 8MB Memorystick included
- LiOn Polymer Stamina battery pack

M505 has only:
- new design (Sony's better)
- color LCD (Sony has it too)
- SD slot (Sony has MStick slot)

RE: Sony Clie
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 4:32:28 AM #
God, I hate biased and uninformed comparisons/reviews!!! Some of the things you missed (intentionally left out):

Palm m505 is much lighter and thinner
Palm m505 has two built-in alarms: LED and vibrating
There's a stowaway keyboard for m505
SD cards are more standard and have more industry support than MemoryStick
Palm doesn't need 3rd party developers to implement working 'auto-mover' functionality like Sony does
Palm will actually provide decent support unlike Sony (at least in U.S.)

This isn't to say that the Clie2 sucks, actually it's pretty cool, but don't spread lies like 'm50x brings nothing new'

RE: Sony Clie
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 9:25:54 AM #
The Stowaway Keyboard for the Clie will be released in June...

RE: Sony Clie
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 9:32:40 AM #
Hmm... interesting news.

Seems to me that the logical question is whether the M505 will come with a 320x320 resolution display or the old specs. If the latter, the Sony would have quite a strong advantage.

RE: Sony Clie still on the top
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 9:57:27 AM #
- doesn't care MS or SD, most of users will use this slot only for one card - memory card

- sorry I forgot about vibrating

That's really all. Clie is still most featured device on the market. 320x320 doublepixeling really rockz, see pictures on the provided URLs.

I'm sorry but the m505 will not come with a 320x320 screen. Everyone who has had the rare opportunity to hold one can confirm this. The m505 has the standard Palm 160x160 screen. I wanted to squash a possible rumor before it got started.

I am an asian, and I ve already used the Japanese version of N700C. The text is great. and the cradle included a modem function.

But the price US$500 is too much. Since Japan version only about US$450.

Just to add that the US N710C will come with a 8M memory stick while the one in Japan does not.

Back in January, Mark/Space released the Clié Mac Pack that allows users to Hotsync their Sony handheld with any USB equipped Mac using the USB cradle or cable that came with the Clié. It handles file installation, too. It costs $30.

It was written for the first generation of the Clié. I don't know if it will work with the new one.

Sony now links directly to the handago puchase site for mark/space mac pac. More or less an endorsement of the software in my opinion.

If your Mac is equipped with IrDa port, (PB, iMac first version...), syncronization can be done via that, of course, much slower.

Who has the better screen???????

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/29/2001 11:39:56 PM #
Is the resolution of the Handera actually better than the new Sony color screen? How about the 500 series! If the screen of the 330 is that much better than a color, one should buy the Handera. There are advantages to a smaller unit; nevertheless, the screen IS also smaller. Tough choice. Someone needs to compare the quality of the screens and size of the screen in the devices.

Comparison: Prism vs. m505 vs. Clie

http://www.zdnet.co.jp/mobile/palm/sp/0104m500/0204.html

Comparison: Prism vs. Clie

http://www.spug.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=10025

Hope this helps.

As you can see: The Prism is brighter than the Clie and the m505. The m505 is the dimmest. But in the outdoors comparison, the Prism is completely dark, wile both the Clie and the m505 are still readable. The Clie's increase resolution is evident when compared to the Prism, and those "grid-lines" are gone from the clie's screen while you can clearly see the Prism's grid-lines.

In my option, the Clie has the best mixed of the color screens.

Does it has a real speaker?
Can program run from the memory stick like the SD card?

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 1:59:39 AM #
I thought that we were talking about the screen, but if you must know...to the best of my knowledge:

1. No, it does not have a speaker, but it does have an earphone jack with earphones included!

2. I'm not sure that you are aware that the m500 and m505 can't really run programs "directly" off the SD card. The Palm OS 4.0 automatically copy the program to the internal RAM and launch it so that programs appeard to run directly off the card. The Sony can do the same thing also using their MS-gate program.

Theorically, if you upgrade the Clie's OS to the Palm 4.0 OS...you may be able to us the memory stick card like an SD card.

Hope this helps.

by the way, does the memory stick runs fast than the current SD card?

RE: Who has the better screen???????

Don't go into the middle of a long thread about the screen to ask a question on the MemStick. If you want to talk about something different, create your own thread. Its like shoving into the middle of a conversation and asking a totally unrelated question. In the real world or virtual, its still rude.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 9:56:41 AM #
I've read some stuff that says the Clie's screen may be more than the rest of it can handle. It has a poor battery life and switching applications can take 5-10 seconds while it redraws. I don't know this for sure, just what I've read. Anyone got a Japanese version and can confirm or deny?

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 11:18:42 AM #
I've already seen (and held) a IIIc, a Prism and a colored CLIE. Guess what -- CLIE really has the best resolution. I've seen ZAP2000 run on all models and CLIE has the best rendered image. You can even see ZAP2000's background (black space with stars, planets and galaxies all over the screen)! Bet you did not notice that on your PDA.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 11:23:53 AM #
Yes, I think that was the original complaint that the Clie was slightly slower (I don't think 5-10 sec.) when the unit is in high resolution mode. However, I think that Sony later released a patch that overclocks the units so that the high res. is now at an acceptable speed.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 1:46:16 PM #
hey how many color does the clie N710c has?
thanks

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 2:14:36 PM #

It runs in 8bit (256 colors)

Prism and M505 run in 16bit (65000) colors

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 2:46:36 PM #

From the pictures on SPUG, I can't really make out which one would be better. the Clie isdefinately dimmer than the Prism, while it has a higher resolution it still only has 256 colors compared to 65000.

Which makes me wonder...

Why hasn't any manufacturers combined a high res with the 16bit color depth that Palm now supports.

Prism has 65000 colors at 160X160
Clie has 256 colors at 320X320

Kind of like sticking a really powerful engine in a car but driving it on bycycle tires....

RE: Who has the better screen???????
GregGaub @ 4/30/2001 3:23:33 PM #
Because the 33mhx processor can't handle 16 bit color AND high res. People have already said that it runs a little slow at that resolution with just 8 bit color. I think next year, when we're talking about ARM processors, we'll also be talking about high-res screens with 32bit color and all the other bells-n-whistles PPC users have been braggin about.
Would you want to wait for 30 seconds for a program to run just for the extra colors? Would you want to SEE the screen draw in on most apps, just for the extra colors? I didn't think so. ;-)

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 4:59:10 PM #
oh, 256 color, forget about sony. I don't care how good the resolution is but with the 256 color, pictures, video, and games will suck so bad. I pass, at least my m505 will fit into my pocket comfortably.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 6:05:22 PM #
That's a funny comment about the 16-bit vs. 8-bit color, considering that most programs out there are written in 8-bit color. There are still very few programs that utilize 16-bit.

The Prism was the only PDA out with 16-bit color (the m505 will be the next), so unless you own a prism...do you really know what you are talking about?

Kinda makes your comment a little defensive, don't you think? Afraid that you beloved palm will get up-staged?

I owned a IIIc and a Kodak palmpix, pictures that took from the palmpix don't look good at all on IIIc and I don't think high-res will help.

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:14:22 PM #
>...unless your showing off your kids pictures.

>"what's with all the color bands on your boys head?"

How about: "what's with all the black gaps...grid-lines in the picture" or how about "is that a picture of your son in the distant? I couldn't tell because the picture is too blocky on the IIIc."

There is no way that increased in color would make a picture look better than increase in resolution. I would rather have a black and white picture that is x4's sharper or a color picture with noticeable pixels and grid-lines between the pixels?

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:23:31 PM #
Oops , maybe I should've said Prism or the m505 instead to the IIIc in the post above.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:40:38 PM #
"I would rather have a black and white picture that is x4's sharper or a color picture with noticeable pixels and grid-lines between the pixels?"

what do you own now? Handera 330 probably the best choice for you then. Sony is just too slow to run with the 320 by 320 res, unless you want to wait 2-3 sec b/w programs. Also switching b/w 160 X 160 program and 320 X 320 is taking time too.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 12:07:37 AM #
What I was trying to imply was that resolution is more important than color depth in overall quality of a picture. Sorry, if my early comment seemed confusing.

Second, I don't really think that the Clie is THAT slow, earlier reports did complain about the speed of the Clie in high res. mode, but Sony has come out with a patch to overclock the processor.

I think I have read that the Clie without any overclocking had a benchmark of 139%, that's about the speed of a visor deluxe. With the overclocking patch in place, users with the Japanese version of the Clie find the speed of the Clie acceptable.

I have also received an email that came with the current version of Afterburner 3.0u that Daniel Wee may work on compatibility of the AB with the Clie once the Clie goes on the market so he can get one.

All that said, the speed of the unit DOES worry me. I'm hoping that there aren't any noticeable lag, especially in text reading.

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 1:01:13 AM #
Does anyone knows what happen to the screen when running 160 x 160 program on it? I read somewhere about switching back and forward..Can anyone who actually own a clie explain this a little better. Thanks

RE: Who has the better screen???????
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 1:28:39 AM #
The Clie has two modes, low(160x160) and high resolution(320x320). For the low resolution mode, the Clie simply quadraple the pixels.

This site provides an excellent impression(in English) for the Japanese Clie PEG-N700C. The "high resolution" page provides the comparison. Check it out.

http://odin.prohosting.com/fujima/n700c.shtml

Forget the screen, what about the speed?!?!?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 3:14:14 AM #
I really like the Clie, but the link above really bothers me. The site was really well written. What I noticed most of all was the speed of the unit and the transfer speed from memory stick to unit appears to be extremely slow by palm standards.

"While most programs run quick enough for me, I still get pauses of 13 seconds when I tap on Apps from a program to get back to the Launch'em launcher. It takes about 5 seconds to get back to the standard launcher."

13 seconds(!!) to revert from a program back to a third party launch and 5 seconds(!!) to revert back to the standard launcher is unacceptable!! My Visor Platinum can do that almost instanteously!!

Although the article later mentioned that Sony released a patcher that overclocks the unit, still the delay will still be there. It's like going back to a 486 from a Pentium.

I think Sony has a terrific unit, but lack the processor to power it. It will be wise to wait for reviews on the Clie before purchase.

Here is a mesg from cnet.com

at the end sony said they will have the camera and GPS on the memory stick. That's cool....but i hope the camera doesn't take 256 color pic and if they take a 16 or 24 bit color pics like the Kodak, they won't look good at all on a 256 color device. Experience from a IIIc with a Kodak palmpix. Hmmmm I think i'll wait for the m505 then decide.

Why Sony won't load OS4 on the Clie?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 8:41:55 AM #
By the may 28 ship date, Palm OS would already be out, so why isn't sony update the OS from 3.5 to 4.0?

Flash ROM
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:19:53 AM #
Does anyone know if this thing has flash ROM? If it does, Sony might release an upgrade to 4.0 later.

If it doesn't , they might have passed on 4.0 because it hasn't been tested in the real world. If the Clie has no way good way to change its OS in ROM and 4.0 turns out to be buggy, then the whole handheld will look bad. BTW, I don't consider non-flashed software patches to be a good way to upgrade the OS.

twizza @ 4/30/2001 10:20:10 AM #
I would think that they would have OS4 as an upgrade a month or two after the new Clié comes out. They would have to retool it to take full advantage of the pixel doubling. Unless, of course, they will be offering a soft-grafatti version (that would be kool & a reason to bounce out of my IIIxe)

$500 Bucks?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 11:28:01 AM #
Okay.. I know that Sony's new PDA can do alot more and I welcome it in to the US market, BUT $500 Bucks? I mean didn't Sony realize that their last PDa was over priced? I mean $500 bucks for any Palm based PDA is tredding on PPC waters. $450 I can see.... but $500 bucks is just way too much for any Palm based PDA. I don't care what they includ with it. The hardware alone and processor 33 mhz or not just isn't worth that much.

RE: $500 Bucks?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 11:41:07 AM #
$500 includes the EAT, the Early Adopter's Tax. The EAT is added to all new handhelds but is removed after a few months. It is charged to people who are so impatient to own a new handheld that they'll pay a slightly inflated price and can't wait until the EAT is removed.

since there is a $50 coupon for clie purchase before 5/31. you might want to download it from Sony website and then use it toward clie N710 purchase (assuming it goes to market (or at least accept pre-order) on time!)

Help with Choice: Palm m505, Sony Clie, or Samsung Color

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 12:25:18 PM #
Hi,

I had a Palm Vx and sold it 3 weeks ago on eBay. I have pre-ordered a Palm m505 from Amazon for $404 (with coupon) and from Gateway for $389 (with coupon)...both are now $449.

Here's the dilemma. I don't want to buy the Palm and then have buyer's remorse. When I had my Palm Vx, I always had it on me. I carry it in my front left pants pocket and it wasn't too large.

The size and color factor are why I ordered the m505. Can I carry the Sony Clie around or is it too thick/heavy. What about the new Samsung color PDA Phone...how thick is it. The Palm Vx was almost too thick, but it manages. That is my only factor...it has to be carryable in my pocket at all times, otherwise the PDA isn't useful to me.

What should I do? I am leaning towards cancelling my pre-orders and waiting, but then I don't want to have to wait in line at Staples with every other geek to get one 6 months from now for $449 + tax.

skytraveler @ 4/30/2001 12:50:53 PM #
Can't help you with the Clie or Samsung, but the Palm M505 is 1 millimeter thicker than the Palm Vx. It shouldn't be too noticeable, except you mentioned that the Palm Vx was almost to big. The Palm M505 has a very nice form factor (it is shaped a little different from the Vx). But, if I were you, I would get on some of the websites showing info on all the products you are considering, and compare size (as that seems to be the most important factor for you).

Good luck!

>The Clie will most definately NOT fit in your pocket like you prefer. it's width, height and depth
>are all larger than a Palm III form factor and I belevie it is a little heavier too.

Get your facts straight before you post misinformation and spread your ignorance!

From THIS article
Clie2: 4.67 x 2.80 x .66 inches and weighs 5.64

From Palm's website at http://www.palm.com/products/palmiiixe/
Palm IIIxe 4.7" x 3.2" x 0.7", 6 oz.

The Clie2 is SMALLER in every dimension and LIGHTER, TOO!!! It's definitely not as pocketable as a
PalmV or Palm m50x, but it's smaller than a Palm III!

RE: Samsung Size
Ed @ 4/30/2001 2:52:07 PM #
The other two sizes have already been covered, so I'll finish up the set by pointing out that the Samsung smartphone will be 4.92 x 2.28 x 0.82 inches and weigh around 6 oz.

Slightly longer, not as wide, but a bit thicker than the competition. The m505 is only .5 inches thick.

At the end of the following article on the Samsung phone is a little comparison chart on device sizes. Take a look:
www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=1750

Carrying a Palm in the front pants pocket is possible now that loose-fitting pants are in style. Never would have happened in the 80s with all those tight jeans.

As for screens, the Samsung one will have 256 colors and a reduced screen size. The Clié also has only 256 colors while the the m505 can display 65000.

Thanks for the comments. It seems like the thickness of the devices it was I need to focus on. It looks like I'll stick with my pre-ordered Palm m505. I would bet though that this time next year, we'll have a color Palm phone as thin as the Palm m505.

Thanks again for y'all's help.

Hey, I'm in the exact same situation....I've got a Palm V, and I keep it in my front left pocket of my trousers as well. I've been waiting for the m505 to come out, so I can finally have a device with 8 megabytes of memory, plus a colour screen. Then, when I check for my daily information regarding the m505 release dates, I see that the new Sony Clie will be coming out soon as well....This adds quite a bit more complexity to my simple problem. Of course the Increased Resolution and Sound Playing is a big influence, however the Increased Size and Memory Stick standard is bad for me. My major concern as well as yours is the device thickness. After some mental consideration, I have decided to stay with the m505....and I'll buy it as soon as it's released. Hopefully this will be the 'better' choice for my personal sake, but everyone is different in what they 'want' and 'need' from a PDA, that's the only reason anyone would buy a PocketPC :) If anyone has any reasons for us to consider in our PDA choice, post them up for everyone to look at and consider for this SPECIAL time for PDA purchasing! Thanks!

RE: Giant Pants?

If size is important to you and the MP3 playback is too, keep in mind that the headphones and remote are not going to fit in your pants pockets unless you're wearing some serious homeboy pants. The CLIE has the same weak speakers all Palms but the H330 do so your music is unplayable without the headphones.

I just had a thought. Does this use a standard headphone jack? If so, you could get some tiny earbuds and solve this problem.

I shot coke out of my nose reading the post on GIANT Pants.

I started this post, and I have to agree with the other guy who has been contemplating this problem with carrying the Palm at all times in your front left pants pocket as so many of us do.

I almost never carry my Nomad II mp3 player around (to work) because it would be unprofessional. That said, I wouldn't mind having that capability. But I can't justify how ridiculous it would look to have a huge clie bulging in my pants leg...I can already hear the jokes from my co-workers. That's why I would never buy an iPaq Pocket PC (even though they are far cooler than Palms in terms of gadgetry).

So, the issue is moot. As we all know, size is important (despite what anyone says). So the Palm it is. Plus, I would hate to have to explain what a Clie is...its so much more "in" to say, "Yeah this is my new color Palm." Even my mother would know what I meant.

Anyone know if the new Clie' will have a vibrating alert?

Clie vs. iPaq

Michael @ 4/30/2001 3:31:49 PM #
Speaking as a competitive kind of guy, I think one of the biggest impacts of the new Sony Clie's US release will actually be on the Compaq iPaq.

But Clie and iPaq are both aimed at the same sort of customer -- media-conscious, buys top end products, etc. In a handheld that's smaller and lighter than an iPaq, Sony has put a higher-resolution screen and an expansion slot, with audio playback.

There's some good competitive differentiation between the new Palm and Sony products -- in addition to price, the Palm m505 is designed to be the thinnest and lightest color system anywhere, whereas you add weight and size to get some things from the Sony Clie. If you want the thinnest and lightest system with dual expansion, get an m505. If you want the most media features and MemoryStick, get the Sony.

I am very pleased; this is exactly the sort of diversity we wanted to get by licensing the Palm OS.

I agree. We haven't seen a decent Palm OS platform that has the 'multimedia' mindset of the Pocket PC. Good move for Sony. And if you don't want to listen to music or watch movies, then forget about it. Stick with the Palm or HandEra. Sony obviosly isn't targeting the business traveler community with this one.

And what's the difference? I hear that Sony will own Palm this time next year anyway.

I figure you're probably joking, but just in case: Palm is not for sale. Period.

What about the m505 screen getting bad press? Is there any truth to it....isn't the Sony screen just plain better for viewing? Is there going to be a difference between the pre-production and the actual production screens? Also, what about a brightness/contrast control on the m505?

No PalmDesktop?!?!?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 6:04:08 PM #
What about Palm Desktop?!?!? The whole point of buying a Palm device is to get away from Microsoft, not use it! Otherwise, tell me where to send my 500

Of course it does sync with the palm desktop.

Does the Clie have a speak?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:12:02 PM #
Okay, how does the alarm work on this guy? Am I going to miss the appointment alarm if I don't have the headphones on or are there the standard pizeo "speakers"?

Clie optimized Documents to Go Pro?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/30/2001 10:40:50 PM #
On sonystyle web site they offer Documents to Go Pro which is "now optimized for Clie".

If that means optimized for 320x320 and =not= pixel quadrupled, that's something I'd like to see.

I'm not a music fan, but a am a big Art Bell talk radio fan. How would one go about recording a media stream from the internet 5 hours long and saving it as 64meg MP3 files?

I don't know if the Clie has a microphone or not, but the ability to take dictation in MP3 format, show documents to go word and excel files in 320x320 native format, would be a huge plus for business people.

First of all, Art Bell is pretty cool, I'm glad that he is back.

Second, the Clie does not have any recording capabilities (although it may in the future through expansion).

Too bad Art Bell is on AM. I record Howard Stern to 53-70mb mp3's using this:

Which PDA is the best?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 9:57:58 AM #
The answer to this question is quite simple. The best PDA is what's best for you. Whether it be the new Clie', the Edge, the m505, or the 330, they all have their distinct advantages and disadvantages. Your needs and preferences are what determines which PDA is the best. Bottomline is they all use the PALM OS and thats all that really matters right?

I was eagerly anticipating the m505 but when news of the new clie came out, that certainly put my wallet back in my pocket. However after reading everyones insights, i think im gonna go with the m505. The main factors; 16bit color, form factor, USB and of course the dual expansion slots.

GO PALM!

RE: Which PDA is the best?
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/8/2001 9:56:58 AM #
It should be noticed that the CLIE is USB-capable, and the only thing preventing it using 16bit colour is the OS (3.5 only supports 256 colours).
With an upgrade to OS4 it will have the same number of colours available as the 505.

Color screen in sunlight

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/1/2001 10:36:09 AM #
I've been reading the comments on the color screens & haven't been able to find any
convincing evidence that the M505, Prism or Sony would be any better than the Nino 510
I've been using, in direct sunlight. Any comments on this?

Sony problem with Desktop

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/14/2001 5:46:26 PM #
It appears that there is a software conflict with the Palm Desktop and the Sony Handheld ( Palm Desktop for Sony )... I just purchased a Sony S300 and have had a nightmare trying to synchronize with my PC... I have followed the instructions in ther manual about uninstalling the original Plam Desktop ( from my M105 )... and still no luck ... I can go through a series of uninstalls, installs and reboots, etc. to get one successful sync... but that's it .. it works only on the first shot... Now I'm screwed because I've missed the deadline for returns to the store I've bought it from and Sony says they cannot authorize a return or even credit... They have admitted to me that there are conflicts trying to run sony handhelds on Plam desktop ...but this does not happen when you try to run palm handhelds on the sony handheld desktop software... seems like an intentional faulty license agreement via palm... palm sucks!

I had the same problem. Deactivate your modem. After this I could do a hotsync
