Comments on: Rumor: System Hack to Increase m505's Contrast (Updated)

Update: This is a hoax. I'm leaving it up here for archival purposes but nothing contained in this article is true. -Ed

A leaked internal memo from Technical Support at Palm has appeared on comp.sys.palmtops.pilot. It covers how to manually increase the contrast on the new m505 to the same level as the Visor Prism's at the cost of decreasing battery life by about 35%. This system hack does not work with U.S.-made m505s, only on ones from Hungary.

Do this at your own risk. Any errors made in entry of the contrast initialization string may result in an endless loop reset. Most Palm Tech Support personnel haven't yet heard of this system hack and at this point they don't support it or suggest it be used.

Why just Hungary models?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 4:10:08 PM #
Does anyone know why this hack only works on Models from Hungary? I assume the models should have the same specs?

RE: Why just Hungary models?
Snubolis @ 5/6/2001 2:25:25 AM #
Actually, it doesn't even work on ALL Hungarian models.. I picked one up on thursday (3may01) and tried this hack, and nothing. I tried it a few times, hoping i just mis-typed something, but still nothing.

I'm going to go into staples tomorrow and try it out on all the units we have in stock (since i work there) and i'll take the one on which it works. =)

Right now I've just got GlowHack running to auto turn on my sidelight, which makes it quite acceptable indoors, certainly not worth dismissing outright and returning promptly.

Palm's second secret contrast hack!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 7:09:05 AM #
It looks like Palm finally broke down and admitted what several people have been saying during the past few days: The Memo Pad Contrast Hack works, and there is a second, more powerful hack that exists.
This second hack is posted below, seen for the first time outside of Palm's OS research facility.

The YYIMT Hack.

1) Open Memo Pad and write "#run\..gosub?c12A3RL$_-_Ya;/?n4+K%!oW,S>>k.@Fi)=deltree".
2) Do Soft Reset.
3) Open Memo Pad and write "DMFR**9(_p%%^//)listdir_-_ncj65$11qw###..deltree".
4) Do soft reset.
5) Software Contrast Control Panel should now be on the screen. Adjust contrast, brightness and color temperature as necessary.
6) Press "Save".
7) Do soft reset.

Note: Palm will need to be recalibrated in case of hard reset, as these settings are kept in the Preferences file in RAM.

I don't bloody well believe this! It actually works. Someone needs to explain to everyone what's going on here. Any programmers willing to do the honors?

Anyone REALLY try this second hack...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:06:01 AM #
The presence of the word "deltree" in it makes me a bit nervous.

Anyone actually do this?

The new m505 contrast hack
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:34:55 AM #
After I reset the second time, all my installed programs were deleted, BUT the settings screen popped up like it was supposed to. I tried a few adjustments, saved them and just HotSynced to bring my programs back. It looks like the Palm OS is a lot more complicated than I thought it was.

If anyone wants to see the before + after photos, let me know and I'll upload them to a site.

You really work ?!! Can you tell us what exactly you do ? Do we need to save the string we type to memo pad ? Does tis hack including the " symbol ?

RE: Why just Hungary models?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 10:34:47 AM #
Let's see the pictures Ted.

RE: show us the proof
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 10:39:21 AM #

Take a screenshot of the m505 with this contrast adjustment panel ON THE SCREEN and post it.

RE: Why just Hungary models?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 12:23:04 PM #
I'd like to see the photos. I am close to putting down my hard earned money on a 505 and want to make sure the screen can be "altered."

RE: Why just Hungary models?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 1:15:51 PM #
I think this is a hoax again... IF someone really can do it, just show us the picture of that damn contrast
control panel showing up on your dim screen....I waste
1 hour to try it ...sucks..........

RE: Why just Hungary models?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 2:10:56 PM #
Could someone please inform us whether or not to include the quotation marks and periods int he following:

1) Open Memo Pad and write "#run\..gosub?c12A3RL$_-_Ya;/?n4+K%!oW,S>>k.@Fi)=deltree".
2) Do Soft Reset.
3) Open Memo Pad and write "DMFR**9(_p%%^//)listdir_-_ncj65$11qw###..deltree".
4) Do soft reset.
5) Software Contrast Control Panel should now be on the screen. Adjust contrast, brightness and color temperature as necessary.
6) Press "Save".
7) Do soft reset.

And by all means, please show before / after results!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 3:20:10 PM #
I attempted it every possible way, just to prove to stubborn people that it's JUST A HOAX. Neither "hack" does anything.

ENOUGH ALREADY EVERYONE. God, you people are just the sort of people who caused publishers to remove the word "gullible" from all dictionaries made in the last 5 years.

RE: Why just Hungary models?
I.M. Anonymous @ 12/1/2001 2:27:20 PM #
Strange - I just drove down to my local Chapters and checked 5 new dictionaries, including Webster's. All of them have "gullible" listed

And my picture was beside the definition.

Anyone done it yet?

Please post a picture of the end result if you have done this....

RE: Anyone done it yet?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 5:57:30 PM #
Actually, please take a picture BEFORE and after, so we can see the change (the difference in cameras and lighting conditions make a single 'after' photo less useful)

RE: Anyone done it yet?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 9:45:35 PM #
Tried it....didn't work, but didn't do any harm

Didn't do any harm?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 12:20:06 AM #
Actually, all you can say right now is that it didn't work. You can't really say that it hasn't done any harm until you use your m505 for a while longer :)

RE: Anyone done it yet?
Snubolis @ 5/6/2001 4:04:18 PM #
Great... just great.

Well it's the next day now after my attempt at getting a higher contrast screen, and the gremlins inside my m505 are surfacing...

i can no longer hotsync... even after a hard reset. Looks like a trip back to staples for me. =(

RE: Anyone done it yet? Yes.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 4:14:37 PM #
I tried it on my Hungarian Palm and wasn't sure if it worked but there was an issue with the screen where a streak of red was on the very left column all the way down so I went to get a USA-made Palm for comparison......

The one I performed the hack on is brighter (not NOTICEABLY). I assume this means someone can program the machine to change the contrast? IT should be only a matter of time...

Just tried - didn't do anything. NT

I have a Hungarian m505, and I have not tried this set of instructions yet. I am very concern about the no-effect reports, I am more concern that I may actually do something negative to my m505. If this is indeed a path to the OS, it may affect other factory settings...too scary to think about.

I am very dissappointed in the m505's screen, all the reviews are accurate in their complaint that the screen is dim and dull. It is hardy readable without the side-light being on. "Brillant 16-bit color" as advertised by palm is an outrageous exaggeration.

Where does this appear?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 4:16:02 PM #
Can someone please furnish the URL so that I can read more?

Hmm...

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 4:59:01 PM #
My M505, although clearly marked "Made in Hungary" seemed competely unimpressed by this series of events. Either something is missing in these instructions, or it doesn't make a noticable difference.

Nice thought, though. I'm sure someone will write a hackmaster hack to add some kind of software contrast control quickly enough.

RE: Hmm...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 9:43:02 PM #
I'm in the same boat. My Hungary unit did not look any different after I preformed the steps above. Maybe I did something wrong. ANYWAY, are there any major differences between the USA and hungray devices? Anyone notice if one is better then the other?

- Thanks

No effect . . .
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 8:11:32 AM #
I carefully repeated this procedure no less than 10 times - even implementing corrections provided - and it still doesn't work. My 505 is a Hungarian model.

Post-brightness hack issue . . . I don't know if this is attributable to the brightness hack, but I charged my m505 overnight (after going through the hack procedure) and this morning turned it on with the backlight OFF . . . I watched the battery meter go from 100% to 86% in under 2 minutes. I just performed a hard reset. I'll recharge and see if the reset helped.

RE: Hmm...
Ed @ 5/6/2001 8:55:05 AM #

The screen is native to brightness. You would have to havwe modification in the hardware to do this phony BS. IT IS NOT IN THE SOFTWARE!!!! It is the hardwares capabilities!!!!

There's an error in your instructions!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 5:09:58 PM #
There's an error in your instructions!

The double quotation mark on line 2 is bogus.
The text entered should be ESC.<0975$6IA without the leading quotes.

This is per the original poster of the message to comp.sys.palmtops.pilot

RE: There's an error in your instructions!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 12:36:40 AM #
Ed, unfortunately you made a mistake in reprinting the Memo Pad Contrast Hack. The original posts describing the MPCH were as follows

1) HotSync to ensure all databases are backed up
2) Open up Memo Pad and write, "ESC.<0975$6IA
3) Save memo and move it to top of Memo list
4) Soft reset
5) Open saved memo, details, change to "Private"
6) Soft reset
7) Open up Memo Pad and write, CONTR.>75319$C/A6/R?L_gosub
8) Save memo and then delete first memo
9) Soft reset

A clarification was later issued stating that no quotation marks were to be used in the text of the memos.

Please fix your article. I can just imaging how many people must have been trying this today using the wrong instructions!

RE: There's an error in your instructions!
Ed @ 5/6/2001 8:59:38 AM #
You are correct, there were actually two errors in the original instructions and I only corrected one the first time. I have added in the missing question mark. Sorry, I was working with bad info.

m505 system contrast hack actually works!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 5:25:30 PM #
Thanks for posting the m505 contrast hack info, Ed. I was planning to return mine until I was able to boost the contrast with this system hack. The color is now great (but not quite as vivid as the Visor Prism). On a scale of 1 - 10, my m505 screen now ranks as a 7, with the Prism being an 8. Before running the hack, I would have rated the screen a 5.

It would be nice to be able to boost the contrast a little more - are there any other secret settings for contrast levels? And why did Palm make the screens so dim originally?

Laurence

RE: m505 system contrast hack actually works!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 5:42:14 PM #
Maybe to save battery, and so they can say you can have weeks of use with one charge.

RE: m505 system contrast hack actually works!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 6:19:09 PM #
I agree, this backdoor is just what I was looking for.

My evaluation on screen quality:

Visor Prism = 9
Sony N700C = 8.5 (tried a Japanese version last week)
m505 hacked = 7.5
m505 "pre" = 5

As always, YMMV.
If someone here could post "pre" and "post" photos (Ed?), it would be helpful to those people who are still worried about running the System Contrast Hack on their 505.

m505 system contrast hack actually works!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 1:19:03 AM #
Yeah right...that's a bunch of BS!!!

It's amazing that people above are claiming that the instructions for the hack worked. Now that their m505 is brighter and everything is just dandy now. Except for one thing!! The original instructions contained an error!!! Check the time of their "hack actually worked" post and check the time of Ed's correction. Do you see a disparity?

Apparently, people used the WRONG instructions and claimed an effect. Delusional or pure BS? You decide.

Error on the safe side, do nothing!!! Who know what kind of things that you are doing to your m505. You don't know if a hard reset could restore previous setting. I would think that it would be wise to wait for some offical comfirmation from a reliable source not all these "I.M. Anonymous".

RE: m505 system contrast hack actually works!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 1:41:45 AM #
You idiot!! Look at the time!! The first report of the hack working was AFTER the first report of the mistake!!

RE: m505 system contrast hack actually works!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 1:56:41 AM #
And the proper instructions have been all over the Internet and in the newsgroups for like about 12 hours now. If someone posted that the hack worked for them, they more than likely just used the proper set of instructions rather than the ones Ed had posted in his report here.
Try to keep your "conspiracy theory" paranoia down to a mininumum, buddy. If the hack works, then great. If it doesn't then so what? Life goes on...

to save battery life!! the system seems to eat battery compared to sony's monochrome.

Increasing contrast

alee @ 5/5/2001 5:39:41 PM #
Is this backdoor increasing the contrast when the sidelight is enabled, or is it increasing the contrast with or without the sidelight?

I'm curious, but am waiting to see some other reports first. I actually like my m505 display quality and the super battery life, so I'm certainly not in a hurry to potentially wreck my unit!

-Al

This is great.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 5:46:29 PM #
I bought my m505 the first day it hit Office Depot (got the free 16MB SD card too) to replace my aging 3Com Palm Pilot Personal (512k!). I've swayed back and forth on my opinion of the screen and finally decided that I do like it a lot as long as I use the sidelight in most indoor situations.

This discovery of a contrast hack is great because it opens the door for OS revisions or third party hack programs with contrast options. Until the method to reverse the hack becomes known I'll hold off on trying it.

Things I'd like to know:

Is the 35% decrease in battery life on TOP of the 20% decrease quoted that is lost for running the sidelight all the time?

Is it still necessary to run the sidelight indoors with the contrast hack applied?

Could one of you kind folks who have applied this hack tell us how long battery life now actually is for you?

Thanks and great job in reporting this Ed!

RE: This is great.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 8:48:13 PM #
Hi,

I just bought an M505 at Office Depot in Torrance, CA and they said that the 16MB SD card was only free with the M500, not the M505. Where is your office depot located? Do you have a copy of your receipt or the ad that you could fax or email to me? My email address is rsprods@bigfoot.com.

Also, I thought that this was very interesting. The first thing I checked on my box was where the unit was assembled. The sticker says USA, but there is another sticker under it that clearly says "made in Hungary." Also, I read somewhere in this forum that models made in Hungary have buttons that move around in tandum when you move just one. Mine is made in the USA and does the same thing.

RE: This is great.
ckohl23 @ 5/8/2001 12:13:17 AM #
yeah...they didn't give me a 16mb SD card either. it would be nice to have something to show any of you guys have a receipt or something to try to persuade the store managers to cough one up.

mine is made in hungary...the buttons move a bit when you wiggle them. i think the hungary and us models are built almost exactly the same.

Well, I tried it - nothing.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 6:30:44 PM #
I have a Hungarian m505, and did EXACTLY what you wrote, and I can't tell any difference.

I am not sure if you are supposed to leave the memo app a couple of times, if you have to have the "hide private memos" set in preferences for it to work, if you are supposed to move the second memo to the top or not, but I did exactly what was written, with no extra steps, and got zilch.

I just hope this isn't some prank designed to make the things malfunction.

RE: Well, I tried it - nothing.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 6:45:50 PM #
Me too....nothing....I guess we're either not able to follow directions or we have non-hackable m505's? It would be nice if someone that got this to work could list step by step how to do it. There is too much room for user interpretation on these instructions.

RE: Well, I tried it - nothing.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 7:05:11 PM #
dont feed the trolls

RE: Well, I tried it - nothing.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 11:04:53 PM #
Don't feed what trolls?!? No one is trolling around here. Just because someone is reporting that this weird hack does not work for their Palm that does not mean that their voices does not count!! Get a life!!!

IMHO, as cool as this hack appears to be, this will definitely be another set back for Palm. Especially if this hack makes a noticable difference. I don't even want to picture the chaos of people trying to get the "Hungarian" Palm!!!

What the hell is going on?? Apparently, m505 has two subtypes the US model and the Hungarian model. Why in the world can they not assemble the palms in one place? I mean of all the places...China, Taiwan, Mexico...why Hungary?!?!?

Although hard to believe, this has happened before. Handspring's first release of the Prism and Platinum had graffi recognition problems(later fix by a patch), there were also complaints about the Prism paint peeling. So I guess Palm deserves leeway, this is a first release of the m505.

Maybe this Hungarian/US palm discrepancy will only affect the first batch of m505's. Palm better release a patch. The increase in contrast will decrease the battery life be 30% plus the 20% decrease with the front lighting on...dude...that a 50% decrease in battery!!!!

RE: Well, I tried it - nothing.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 7:43:04 AM #
Why not Hungary?

Hungary has a well educated and eager workforce. Labor costs are low, supply chain routes to the ER and US markets shorter (than Asia) and well established.

M505 Questions

pscheel @ 5/5/2001 7:10:53 PM #
Although this is off hte subject, I can't seem to find any other site with the number of 505 owners responding.
I have a couple of questions if anyone can help:
1. Are all the Hard Keys on yall's 505 connected as one? What I mean is that if you lightly touch one of the keys, all the others move around as well? Feels kinda cheap to me, not as solid as my Vx.
2. Have any of you had any problems beaming anything to a Palm V with an older OS? I can't seem to beam anything to the V, my 505 says it can't find the other unit. I can beam from my 505 to a Vx then to the V, but not directly.
Sorry for getting of the subject but didn't know where else to ask.

RE: M505 Questions
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 7:19:28 PM #
my buttons are exactly as you describe...i agree it seems cheap also...as far as the beaming capabilities...I beamed to a Vx w/ OS 3.5.2 with no problems....not sure what to tell you on that one....check the beaming is accepted on the receiving machine I guess...although you should get a popup automatically on the receiving machine.

Any thoughts on the duplicate serial number stickers?

Read programs directly from the SD card on m500 and m505???
Posted by: CLIE Users Group Moderator @ 5/5/2001 5:50:55 PM

Can someone please verify this by doing the following:

1) Download MSMount from
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CLIE_Users_Group/files/MSMount%200.6.5.zip

2) Install it on an m500 or m505.

3) Find out if it reads files off the SD card automatically.

This program could potentially make the m50x series *much* more useful PDAs than they appear to be in their current state, since MSMount could allow any program to be run from the SD slot.

Whoever finds this out first, please post the answer here so Ed can do an article about it.

You know, I'd be tempted to try this out, except these yahoo groups always turn out to be scams, or piles of porn adverts, just about anything except what they purport to be...

RE: Read programs directly from the SD card on m500 and m505???
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 1:44:05 AM #
Try it - I joined the group today and it's legit. It's just a small CLIE users group that started up a week ago. They have MSMount in their "Files" section. If you're still worried, post an email address and I'll send you the program to test.

I can't believe no-one has tried this yet. If it works, Palm should buy the program and include it as part of the OS. I have a TRGPro and the ONLY reason I put up with its crappy screen and old-school Palm III form factor is so I can use AutoCF (like MSMount) to access 32 MB of files seamlessly on my CF card. I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 2:40:56 AM #
Did you load it by doing a regular HotSync? Are you using a different (3rd party) launcher? Are you running a lot of hacks? Ideally, if we are going to find out if MSMount works, I think we should try to keep the configuration of the m505 it is being tested on as simple as possible. That way, if it doesn't work, we at least know that the problem isn't due to software conflicts, etc.

RE: Read programs directly from the SD card on m500 and m505???
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 3:46:40 AM #
Following is the procedure to use MSMount:
1.HotSync the two files into palm: MSDW.prc, MSMount.prc
2.Use any memory card management utility, such as McFile to create a directory on SD card to store your programs. Write down the full path. You will need it in the following steps.
3.Move the programs or data into this directory.
4.Go into Prefs, pull down the menu at upper right corner on screen, you will see a "MSMount".
5.Get into it, type in the full path you created on SD card in step.2. Then tap the "Enable" button and check the two boxes below.
6.Now you can use apps or data stored in SD as they are in the RAM.

Warning!
1.Not all kinds of programs can be used this way. You have to try it yourself. As for data, I had tried doc format ebooks, iSilo format ebooks, KDIC dictionary databases, and they work fine. But you can not modify or write somgthing into these databases. You can only read them.
2.Before deleting from or moving something into the directory you created for MSMount, be sure to disable MSMount first, or your palm may crash.
3.This program is still under development, so please use it with care.
For the newest version, you may go to
http://www.geocities.com/nagamatu/MSMount
(if you can read Japanese)
I personally suggest palmers with Palm m50X to try apps originally developed for SONY Clie to use Memory Stick, such as MSMount, PowerRun, McFile, etc. You will find something interesting.

I've been playing with this for a few minutes. Some side effects:

1. You CAN add apps from the SD (MMC) card to be seen on the App launcher (including Launcher III)
2. It is considerably slower to read a large file from the MMC than it is native RAM. Can anyone confirm this is the same with an SD card??? I only have a 64 MB MMC card, but I suspect its slower than a true SD card.
3. Applications that are able to read from the SD slot will show the items twice (if you use the directory Palm/Launcher, which is where the Palm desktop installs the files).

WHERE can I get McFile and the others you mentioned? I can't find it on Palmgear and the Yahoo group has only PowerRun and MSMount.

I cannot answer your question 1&3, because I have only Clie s300 at hand, and Palm m50X is still unavailable here in Taiwan. :( As for question 2, yes, that's also the same situation on my Clie with 64M Memory Stick. If you are unsatisfied with the speed of MSMount, try PowerRun. The way PowerRun acts is very like your PC. The codes are stored on memory card, when you tap its icon, codes are copied into native RAM and executed. When you exit the program, changed data are written back into memory card, and codes in native RAM are erased. Under many situations, PowerRun is even much faster than MSMount. But you still cannot expect it's as fast as in native RAM. Copying codes from memory card into native RAM takes time, but not very long, usually within several seconds. I think it's the price we have to pay for asking a lot of "virtual" RAM.

By the way, if you can read traditional chinese, you may go to:

http://www.clie.idv.tw
or
http://clie.hk.st

Many useful apps for Clie(s300, N700C, even N710C) there, including those can be used on m50X, such as MSMount, PowerRun, McFile, etc.
Sorry for only traditional chinese in these sites. It seems that not many Clie users in US, but many Clie fans here in Asia.

This is a program that lets you change the contrast, fiddle with the backlight settings (invert it) and It involves no dangerous settings. It's availble at palmgear.com (url is long) it was recently released, so just type Hack into the search field and you'll find it. Have fun with it.

Hey. This sux.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 8:56:18 PM #
I am torn between the M505 and the CLIE-710C. I know the screen kinda sux on me M505 (I saw it at Office Depot, but I wasn't able to mess with anything cause they had the stupid demo on. I am not sure if the sidelight was on or not.), but I am afraid that the CLIE may not be as sturdy. Plus, I have a feeling that developers will persue the SD cards more than the Memory sticks. Does anyone know when/if palm is releasing its new models. Maybe I will just wait til I can get a palm with a better screen like the one on sony's device.

RE: Hey. This sux.
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/5/2001 9:40:04 PM #
I belive sony and palm use the VFS (virtual file system). If developers write a[pplications around the VFS there programs shoud work off os memory stick or SD. An application that does this is BackupBuddyVFS. Also, Palm just released there new PALM its called the m505!!!!!

How do you know if it worked?

Cloudy

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 12:29:31 AM #
I love my 505... but I'm wondering does anyone else think the display looks "cloudy" with the sidelight on?

I looked at one in Office Depot before buying and did not notice this really, I thought it looked great so I bought one but looking at mine at home with the light on it just looks very unclear and so not crisp... looks GREAT in sun but indoors with the light on just not clear enough its foggy lookin!

Are some units better than others? I can easily live with this, but I'd rather have a more clear and crisp one if possible. Advice?

RE: Cloudy
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 8:26:02 AM #
We are stuck with cloudy. I have a Palm IIIc. It is
a backlit screen...therefore it is not cloudy. The
sidelight shines down on the reflective screen giving
the cloudy effect.
If you ever had a sidelit watch you will remember the same effect.
BUT I don't think it's that big a deal...plus I am sure someone is writing a contrast HACK that will improve thing.

RE: Cloudy
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 9:38:26 PM #
I have a hungarian m505 and my screen seems cloudy when I turn it on with the "sidelight" I guess that's how it's made. I also tried the first hack string listed and it didn't seem to help. I'm going to look into it with palm, and I'll also look for updated strings. Keep ya posted!!

The *correct* m505 Contrast Hack

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 12:47:44 AM #
Unfortunately a mistake was made in reprinting the Memo Pad Contrast Hack here on Palminfocenter. The original posts describing the MPCH were as follows (see the threads in the major Palm newsgroups or Brighthand for confirmation):

1) HotSync to ensure all databases are backed up
2) Open up Memo Pad and write, "ESC.<0975$6IA
3) Save memo and move it to top of Memo list
4) Soft reset
5) Open saved memo, details, change to "Private"
6) Soft reset
7) Open up Memo Pad and write, CONTR.>75319$C/A6/R?L_gosub
8) Save memo and then delete first memo
9) Soft reset

A clarification was later issued stating that no quotation marks were to be used in the text of the memos.

Hopefully everyone who tried this using the incorrect instructions will find out they were writing the wrong hack string!

You state that you left your palm on for 2 1/2 hours? Is there any chance of "Burn-In" like you would normally get on a PC monitor? Is there a need for a screensaver like a regular PC? I typically leave mine on in the cradle during the day, should I have any concerns?

RE: The *correct* m505 Contrast Hack
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 5:09:46 PM #
It is impossible for an LCD screen to get burn in.
As everybody knows (or doesn't know),the LCD screen is just a bunch pixels in through which electric current flows through. On CRTs, an electron gun shines electrons (at about 20 kV) onto phosporus. What burn-in is what happens when the phosphorus tends to burn away because of the intense voltage.

RE: The *correct* m505 Contrast Hack
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 10:09:43 PM #
What about the sidelights burning out? I've found the m505's screen to be difficult to use without the sidelights on in most areas I'm in so I plan on having the sidelights on all the time.

RE: The *correct* m505 Contrast Hack
dteky @ 5/6/2001 10:48:53 PM #
The screen burn-in didn't happened. Weird that I drained the battery down to "Critical level" of 3.72V in about 4 hours(yes I kept the palm on for that duration).

Can anyone else comment on the battery/confirm the usage of the hack on the US version?

RE: The *correct* m505 Contrast Hack

<<

In addition to the impossibility of LCD screen burn-in, it should be noted that VGA or better screens take days or possibly weeks to burn an image, rather than the hours necessary with CGA/EGA/monochrome screens. Screensavers with modern computers are largely for user entertainment purposes.

Just hit "CTRL F" and type in a date like "5/6" and you can then jump to all message that have the 5/6/01 date. Works for me.

Anybody actually check with Palm?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2001 11:22:50 AM #
I know I'm not the only skeptic here, but did anyone else find it odd that the original post specifically mentioned that many Palm tech support people do not know about this hack? I just wonder if there are other side affects that we don't know about...and maybe that's why only Tier III support know about it.

I have yet to receive my 505 or I'd be doing the calling myself. I can't really say I believe or disbelieve without seeing it for myself. I don't know if anyone did make it clear...does the hack increase the contrast of the screen or the brightness of the sidelights? If the latter, then the battery drain isn't much more than just leaving the sidelights on all the time, right?

M505 screen comments and questions

ToughD @ 5/6/2001 4:32:47 PM #
I too was disappointed with the dullness of the screen. But, after I started using it I really have come to enjoy all the other features the 505 has to offer. Hopefully Palm will come out with a patch or some update to allow users to adjust the contrast themselves, which should have been done to begin with.

I've really learned a lot from the posts here at palminfocenter and being somewhat of a Palm newbie I have a couple of questions.
Is there any freeware programs out there that will keep track of my students' attendance?
I'd also like to know if its possible to download web pages to my 505 from my PC and view them from my 505?

Thank you.

RE: Hey Ed
Ed @ 5/7/2001 9:15:03 AM #
I have not tried this. I'm tempted to just to help settle whether it actually does anything or not. While a few people have written in to say that it works, many more have said that nothing happens. I don't know what to think. Frankly, I'm a bit uncomfortable running something on the site that I can't confirm.

However, I think the potential disadvantages involved in this outweighs its advantages. I like my m505's screen now. I also think its battery life is decent and and reducing it by 35% would be a major blow to its usefulness. Also, if it turns out to mess something else up on the Palm, I'd be in trouble. I can't afford to be without my m505 right now. I need it for too much other stuff.

I apologize for not being able to settle this once and for all. Maybe I should have labeled this story a rumor.

I tried the screen contrast "Hack" last night on my "Assembled in Hungary" 505. It did no harm that I can tell as it still works fine. I did not notice any perceptable difference. However, while I did not see any difference in the screen, I have turned GlowHack off. So either it is slightly better or I have gotten used to the screen.

..I have the 500 and the 505. I really wanted the 505 to be "the" PDA I have been waiting for. Unfortunately, the screen is BIG disappointment. Sold my PRISM w the hopes of the 505 being equal or better screen-wise and size factor. I did a side by side screen comparision, only to become irritated with 505 screen. The 500 screen is actually easier to read...indoors, outdoors...backlight. My suggestion is save the dough and go w the 500.

Sad State of Affairs

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 3:06:52 PM #
It is a sad state of affairs where users have to scramble to find some obscure software hack to improve the screen quality of the Palm m505 and trade off battery life for the device. Palm should have designed the device in the first place to have the screen brighter by default and sized the lithium polymer battery accordingly to get an acceptable battery life. This might have increased the thickness of the device by 1/8" but I think this is a fair tradeoff. I for one can wait another month for the Sony Clie.

RE: Sad State of Affairs
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 4:11:31 PM #
Absolutely. It's a shame that the Brighthand Editor saw fit to award the M505 an "editor's choice". Hopefully no one bought one taking his thoughts into account. I returned my M505 and ordered a Clie. It couldn't be worse!

Many users are happy with the m505
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 4:25:16 PM #
so don't blow it out of proportion. I use EasyView to keep the backlight on, and I think the m505 has the best PDA screen for all-around conditions. Palm did a great job.

RE: Sad State of Affairs
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 6:11:08 PM #
I completely agree with the "Many users are happy..." post. At first I was disappointed with the screen as my last Palm was a IIIc. But, after using it for a few days and seeing the versatility of the screen, I'm very happy with.

The screen is extremely readable in outdoor lighting and the same could NOT be said about my IIIc which is what annoyed me the msot about it. I spend most of my time indoors as well, but having to squint and stare very closely at the screen is unaccetable. The m505 changes all of that.

Indoors, it COULD be brighter but I find there are VERY few places where neither the ambient light is NOR the sidelight is enough. In most places, the sidelight works beautifully. And in office buildings, (at least the ones I've been in), the reflective screen is a winner. The colors may not be as rich as the IIIc but I love the contrast against the background.

Let's all keep in mind that most of us are early adopters so we're overwhelmingly in the minority here. I think the m505 will do very well, period. Previous monochrome users shouldn't be disappointed with the screen, for the most part, as the screen is still better than any monochrome out there.

If there is the capability to adjust the brightness through software, then I hope Palm will release a patch or something. But, at this point, I doubt it given that most of the consumers of the m505 will be satisfied. Also, if you give users the capability to adjust brightness, I would assume that most would turn up the brightness and thus shortening battery life. I think Palm is just trying to be consistent with their principles of keeping things compact and effective (meaning long-lasting).

One last thing, if they drop the price down to $399 I'm gonna be pissed. But, oh well, guess that's what I get for always needing the coolest stuff when it first comes out!

RE: Sad State of Affairs
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/7/2001 11:56:07 PM #
And why on EARTH would you SHAKE your new Palm Pilot?! How old are you?!?

RE: Sad State of Affairs
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:49:05 AM #
I think most of the complaints about the screen have to do with expectations more than anything else. Palm wanted to build flexbility into the lighting conditions the screen could handle. They also wanted to keep battery drain low and traded off some brightness. Had they increased the brightness while using a slightly larger battery, people would be griping about the extra thickness of the unit. The bottom line is, if you expect perfection, you're gonna be disappointed--it doesn't matter what you buy.

RE: Sad State of Affairs
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:56:16 AM #
The rattle you hear is coming from the buttons. They are set internally as one unit, and each opening for the buttons allows a millimeter or two of wiggle room.

RE: Sad State of Affairs

The rattle is actually the power/LED button. Palm could have tightened up that seam. The cradle is sooooooo easy. They even put a b/w piece of paer in the box explaining the simple manuever. Just tilt the 50x towards you and lift.

I agree with the person who previously owned the IIIc. It's tough when you were a IIIc owner, as was I. Got spoiled with that brilliant, however pixilated color screen. I have owned the M505 for about a week, and is slowly beginning to grow on me. Yes, the screen is not as brilliant, but, it does offer more flexibility as to where I can use the M505 now, outdoors, direct sun, or indoors. At first, I put the IIIc and the m505 side by side and wondered "what were the engineers thinking of..." But, the m505, has proved to me to be more versatile, in all lighting conditions. I had thought of returning the m505, but now beginning to realize that the features really offset the screen. Having been a Palm ower from the Professional to the IIIC and currently the m505, my loyalty (and my $$) goes to Palm. The unit is sexy, and feature-rich. I could get past the screen, and ya know, the screen gets better every time...

I have to agree fully with this comment. The M505 - despite the fact that its screen will not light up a room - is a great unit. the screen is great.

I have no prob with the quality, the color or anything else about the product.

This unit is for the professional and not for the "gamer". This is not a multi-media unit, but it does what Palm likely intended it for - help manage your information - while having some perks such as color and expansion.

Great product!!

No problems with the screen for me

I love the screen ... under most lighting conditions it looks better than my VisorDeluxe. For the life of me, I can't see what the complaints are.

I have to agree I received my m505 and although the screen intitally startled me to where i actually called palm and asked, playing around with it more I really like the screen and I especially enjoy the compact nature of the palm. It can easily fit and my purse and is slim. I think that this is an excellent product but hey the m505 is not for everyone.

RE: get a Reality Check
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 3:51:51 PM #
It amazes me how humans can adapt to almost any adverse condition, and fool themselves into thinking that a mediocre situation is not so bad after all, but perfectly acceptable. This applies to the m505 screen quality or lack thereof. Just think how much more usabliity and functionality you could get out of the device if it had a superior screen like the upcoming Sony Clie.

RE: get a tan
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 4:02:01 PM #
Most of people are fooled by the Sony clie 710c screen. Why do you want to get a nice looking screen device and it takes 3-5 sec(some database program from MS take up to 10-13 sec) to load up a program while m505 is almost instant. MP3 is nice but when do you actually use it. When I am at home, I got my nice stereo. When I get in my car I listen to radio. When I am at work, I actually work. Besides how many song can you load on a 8Mb MS? You need to spend $150 more for 64 Mb or $299 for 128 Mb for mp3. I think this MS is way over price.

RE: get a tan
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:29:36 PM #
I agree the Clie 700 has a nicer screen than the m505, coz I've seen them both, but for practical purposes the m505 is my preferred choice.

As much as I like the Clie, it's useless if I can't put it in my pocket. It feels WAY too bulky. You'll know when you put the 2 units in your hands. When I think about it, the Clie is so thick that I'd rather get an Ipaq (hi res, has mp3, more memory, etc). It's actually slightly thicker than an ipaq!

Speed wise, I feel that the m505 is definitely quicker. I would say the Clie is useable though.

If all you want is the best screen and mp3, then get the Clie. If you really want to use it as an organizer, the m505 is a lot better. The screen is definitely useable. It's not the best, but it's better than looking at a monochrome in my opinion. The vibrating alert is also a big plus for me. Too bad I can't buy it in Hong Kong yet...

Re: Second Contrast Hack

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 1:18:22 PM #
I don't know if I want to use a hack with the "deltree" command (delete directory). Sounds fishy. But I wonder what else you can do with the memo pad... many more easter eggs in the Palm than we know about.
RE: Re: Second Contrast Hack
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 2:44:36 PM #
Neither one of these work. It's a hoax. Why is it this website is so slow to catch on to what all the others figured out already?

RE: Re: Second Contrast Hack
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 2:54:02 PM #
Don't use deltree, use the DEBUG command and low level format your Palm. After accomplishing this, use FDISK to partition it (I have a linux partition and NTFS 5).. then use FORMAT /S to transfer the system. Then open up config.sys and add the line "BRIGHTNESS=100%". Do a warm reboot and you're finished!

Does the new contrast hack work on US models???

Hi all,
Has anyone verified if this actually works and if so, does it work on US models?????
Thanks

All of these "hacks" are verfied hoaxes and will not cause any good or bad effects.

Verified how? Trying all of them, on models assembled in Hungary and the U.S., for one. Talking to senior tech support reps at Palm, for two. COMMON SENSE, for three.

This Is Really Sad
dstrauss @ 5/9/2001 3:33:46 PM #
I don't know which is worse: the pranksters who keep posting and keep this urban legend alive, or all the early M505 owners desperate to improve the contrast/backlighting on their new handhelds. This really ought to tell Palm more about the failure of this new unit than any negative reviews out there.

Which second hack??? The correction of the origianl posting regarding the hack or the "second secret hack"? and why are these suppose to only work on Hungary Assembled models?? I have a US model and I would like to improve the contrast, but I still have no idea if this is a HOAX or it is legitamate? And I haven't tried it because I have not seen one posting referencing that it will work or is suppost to work on the US models.

RE: Does the new contrast hack work on US models???
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2001 5:08:56 PM #
Brighthand doesn't know what they are talking about, and they were talking about the first hack, not the second hack posted here above. And the hack they listed also had typos from what the original hoax/hack newsgroup poster listed and later clarified.

It's a PROVEN HOAX, stop wondering. I tested it (actually all the various "hacks" posted on newsgroups and websites) myself on more than one Hungary-assembled m505.

It appears that an entrepreneur has already used the code from the Memo Pad Contrast Hack and created an EVPlugBase/Hackmaster hack.

Take a look at Palmgear. Supernova Software has released bright505 and it REALLY works. I think someone was just trying to make fun of them with the bogus post above. I downloaded it, installed EVPlugBase (included) and enabled bright505. I'd estimate the contrast improvement is roughly 20% - not exactly huge, but enough to let me keep my m505. Check it out!

Ed @ 5/15/2001 12:16:08 AM #
This is all a hoax. None of the hacks work and there is no such app as bright505.

This isn't the first time I've been taken in by an elaborate hoax and I have to give Satan credit for doing an amazing job putting all this together and making the "hack" complicated enough to seem real. It was even mildly amusing if you like that sort of thing and well timed to feed off the mania on the m505's screen.

But this joke has lived on past its prime. It is time we let it quietly fade away.
