Comments on: HandEra 330 Begins Limited Shipping

At least one webstore has begun shipping preordered HandEra 330s. Transplant Computing expects some of their customers to get theirs as early as Tuesday. Unfortunately, they have a limited supply. Company president Steve Emery said, "They (the 330s) are constrained right now and I am shipping on a first-come first-served basis. I expect to ship to all of my pre-order customers by the end of the month." He has already shipped all the units he has in stock and doesn't know exactly when he will receive more. "HandEra has not provided any specific dates for further shipment."

If anyone knows of webstores that are shipping the HandEra 330, please let us know. -Ed

Palmgear Expected ship date for the handera 330 was May 7th. They said that do to delays they could not fulfill that timeframe, but are expecting the Hnader units "any day now". They also said that they were expecting them "sometimes this week". I am very anxious as i preordered my handera from them...anxiously waiting...

sound

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/13/2001 3:28:12 PM #
does anyone know how good sound will be and if it is possible to play mp3's

RE: sound
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/13/2001 4:26:01 PM #
Yes, most people know that sound will be better than all other Palm devices and that you won't be able to play mp3s through the device. You can record and play low quality .wavs, though.

RE: sound
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/13/2001 7:03:30 PM #
I would imagine with the market the 330 is geared toward, the ability to play mp3 ranks right there with dispensing toilet paper.

RE: sound
GrouchoMarx @ 5/14/2001 12:55:33 AM #
Hey, a portable toilet paper dispenser would be cool! :-)

Seriously, though, the 330 has the same speaker as the TRGpro, but it's in front and has a better echo chamber. So it's louder, clearer, and more capable than any other Palm device, but not mp3-capable.

See! No one cares about the Handera!

When the Palm m505 was shipping, these were almost immediatley almost 300 posts! There are only seven (including this one) about the Handera! Nobody cares!

RE: See! No one cares about the Handera!
Jim @ 5/13/2001 7:44:49 PM #
Well I certainly care about this. I did however buy a m505 and I use my PDA for medical reference and drug guides as well as tracking patients. I love the m505 but I have been getting headaches trying to read it throughout the day (all my work is indoors) even though I didn't really mind the display at all. I guess the test isn't sharp enough for me. My previous PDA is the TRGPro and I have absolutely no problems with the display on that. I will however miss the small form factor of the m505.

when will handera ship a color model? that is when you will see 300 postsn almost immediately. The expansion is nice, but more people prefer a small device with a color screen.

I care!!!!

It is Sunday on a beautiful Spring day. We've all been out enjoying the fresh air and pollen. You have to give us a chance to comment.

My comment: WO HOO! Keep your tiny toys and MP3s, bring on the Palm I can get some work done on, the HandEra 330.

p.s. MP3s are nice. I listened to one once about 2 years ago.

Nobody seriously expects the 330 to sell anywhere as much as the m505. However, how many posts have you seen all bitching about the 505? There won't be anywhere near as many (even as a percentage of total posts about the 330) moaning about the 330.

Let's see...this message was posted on 1) a Sunday during the Spring, 2) Mother's Day. Davy, you were one of the first people to post, and your post was negative(as most of yours are). This means you should:
1) get out more--enjoy the nice weather
2) contact your mother--take her out if possible
3) stop griping so much
4) get off the anti-Handera wagon--don't buy it if you don't like it.

Just a few suggestions for you...

Ok.....
Davy @ 5/14/2001 6:59:28 PM #
You've had your chance now. It's been well over a day, hasn't even made 20 posts. Most of my posts are negative, yes, but there's enough no topic posts and sappy happy ones that I'm just balancing out with opinions. It also kinda scares me that you remember my name, as I've posted like 3 times.

RE: See! No one cares about the Handera!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2001 7:33:09 PM #
But what is there to post? It isn't like the M500 and M505 that nobody had a clue as to when we were going to see them and no conflicting reports from vendors. This is a straight forward release of a product. I have one order and I should receive it soon; it is not a big deal.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/15/2001 9:53:47 AM #
I agree, what exactly do you want us to post?? I should have my Handera any day now, just as promised. What's the big deal?? I'm sure there will be plenty of posts once people actually have them and can tell everyone else how great they are! ;-)

If you are the person who posted the "come check out my site" comment, I deleted it because it didn't have anything to do with the release of the HandEra 330, which this article is about. I suggest you request feedback for your new site from one of the Palm-related newsgroups.

need more convincing

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2001 1:29:21 AM #
I'm still weighing the pros and cons of "keep it simple" vs "put the kitchen sink in there too".

I definitely want more memory, however I don't want =any= problems with the external memory. I want it spelled out what that memory will be able to do.

I have to say I'm not convinced that the external memory available for trgpro, handera, clie, m50x are ready for "prime time" running applications and storing data. I would want the external memory to be as functional as the zip disk is on my computer. They sell card readers for CF disks, however I'm not certain if a PC will be able to read the files on it if they were put there by a handera. Also, it would be handy to transfer docs, programs, and other data files to the CF reader from the PC, but not sure if that is possible.

One thing I like is the flip cover on my Palm IIIe. Does the handera, m50x, clie have a flip cover? Where are they thinking people put these devices? Either in a pocket or bag with other stuff. The screen is sensitive to scratching and needs to be protected when not in use.

fkclo @ 5/14/2001 3:02:53 AM #
I cannot say much on Clie or M50x, which to a certain extent are still limited on the functionality of external storage, ie. Memory Stick and SD cards. While beta versions are rapidly emerging for MSMount which adds to operation transparency for applications stored in SD and MS, I think it will need a little more time to become mature and "combat proven".

As a TRGpro user, I am very satisified with how it handles files on CF, which by nature, is very different from SD. CF has its own I/O control and use the same catergory of file system as your PC. I never had any problem transferring files back and forth between my TRGpro and my PC. I have 64MB card which serves both my TRGpro ( taking up around 16 MB on apps/data and another 16MB for 2 sets of backup) and my PC ( which I store data on a directory for my PC files, utilising the rest of memory). I am also using the CF card as the Palm application 'installer" when I need to install large database or apps. It is much faster this way.

TRGpro comes with a standard III series flip cover (which is the same size and type as your IIIe) Same for Handera. The stock "leatherite flip cover for Vx is not very nice" but there is a 3party flip from paralleldesign.com who did a very good job for a retrofit flip. There are other forms of "flip cover" for Visor too. As a whole there should be no concern of absence of screen protection - you in fact have ample choices in the market.

I hope this helps.

I think you're right when waiting and weighting pros and cons.

From my point of view, there is definitely no need for external memory with only two exceptions:
1- MP3: you need all the stuff to be "just on device"
2- backup: it is better to backup to something you can touch to be sure you got the backup.

All other things can be done via (possibly wireless) internet connection. I can imagine installing files via internet (easy, isn't it?), even backing up some important files (via ftp?), or last but not least, some kind of "virtual drive" - storage room placed in the internet and accessible from Pilot via one tap in usual manner.

Maybe there are some solutions of this kind...

I love having the extra memory the CF card on my TRGPro provides. With AutoCF from Handera, accessing program on CF is fast and easy. By loading all my games and large programs on CF, I have lots of free memory to handle tons of databases, lots of email on the road, large web cache, etc. Backups onto the CF are easy and fast as well, and give you great peace of mind on the road. Far better than having to carry around a bunch of Springboards to do the same thing. Does the average user need all that extra memory? Perhaps not right now, but we're seeing larger and larger applications for Palm everyday. I personally love the fact that I can put just about any program I want on my Palm and not worry about it taking up too much space.

External memory

Lim Meng Shi @ 5/14/2001 9:40:43 PM #
Those who don't think external memory is important probably are not using/pushing the limits of their PDAs the same way as those who do. For me, the TRGPro / HandEra are the only Palm-based PDAs that allow me to have LOTS of drug & medical references as well as other e-books like dictionary/thesaurus/novels etc in a small package.

Moreover, the ability to backup & restore to/from a non-volatile medium like CF is immensely reassuring & indispensable.

Those who want to know more about what external memory/AutoCF can/can't do should join the TRGPro User Group at Yahoo's egroup. There are lots of helpful folks there.

The TRGPro Users Group is AWESOME!
They also have the best collection of freeware apps that I've ever seen in their download section.

HandEra & color

Lim Meng Shi @ 5/14/2001 9:40:43 PM #
If HandEra had introduced color as well as high resolution screen in the 330, the 300 or so messages would be those complaining how slow the unit works. (Like the Sony). Sorry guys. This is the end of the line for the Dragonball processor. As far as I'm concerned, HandEra made a very good engineering compromise balancing
features & power hit. We will have to wait for the StrongARM processor to reach the next level of performance. In the meantime, enjoy what the Dragonball can provide.

Hand-yGeek @ 5/14/2001 9:43:32 PM #
Oh puh-leeze! Spare me your crystal ball predictions! Your crystal ball isprobably seriously cracked. Let the HandEra 330 prove itself better than the Palm m505 (although I have my own reserves).

not bad!

altema @ 5/15/2001 8:13:01 PM #
I had a chance to use a HandEra at our recent PUG meeting. They have a lot of ideas that Palm would have been wise to imitate. The Hi-res screen is beautiful, and the drop down grafitti area should be standard. The sound is also much better, AND loud. The only drawback is what some regard as a less-than-attractive case, and the slightly larger size. As far as color machines being slow, this myth came about with the IIIc being released with OS 3.5, which has more functions and also introduces wait states. This appeared to remove some of the snappiness, and some blamed it on the color. The wait states can be removed by ClockUpDA without even changing the processor speed.

Slightly larger size? Than what, a matchbox? It's the same size as the III series.

Rand McNally StreetFinder GPS for the Palm III

Can the Handera or TrgPro fit into the Rand McNally StreetFinder GPS for the Palm III?

I've dug and dug, and can't find a definite "no", which is neither a definite "yes", so I thought I would ask yall.

David, you must have been looking on the Rand McNally site because HandEra definitely shows the StreetFinder on it its list of supported accessories.
