Comments on: Big Name Games Coming to Palm

Infogrames, a top game publisher, is going to work with Finland's Springtoys to develop a series of Palm OS games. Springtoys is going to produce six Palm games from some of Infogrames' most popular PC and console ones, including Driver, Centipede, Asteroids, Deer Hunter, Pro Bass Fishing, and Beachhead 2000. The first games are scheduled to be available this summer.

Driver on palm ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/13/2001 12:37:38 PM #
Hmm...- Can't wait to see what it's gonna look like... The problem with all car driving games on the palm is control and keeping a good feeling of the road (realism). I wonder how this one will manage. Hopefully there'll be a downloadable demo soon ?

if you haven't seen Race Fever yet, check it out. If Driver on the Palm is as good, or better than Race Fever, then they'll have a winner. It might take practice to get used to the stylus controls in Race Fever, but once you do, it's intuitive and more accurate than using buttons. great game.

Now, WHERE ARE SOME SCREEN SHOTS, SEGA!?? :P

Sigh

I can't imagine how the gameplay on centipede will hold up in terms of moving the bug(?) around. I have to confess that I doubt I would consider paying for any of these games because IMHO the arcade type games don't play well or aren't interesting enough on Palm OS. There are notable exceptions of course, but unless they do a stellar job, I just can't see them recouping much of their development costs. IMHO

I didn't think about the problem of controlling the shooter in Centipede as I forgot that you could move it up and down as well as left and right.

I wouldn't mind however if the Palm version only allowed for left and right movement.

There are a few favorite Palm games that I own that work very well on the Palm. The best IMHO is Galax and Froggy (both by same developer PilotFan. Coming in a close second is Blocks which is freeware (electonhut). All 3 games support color and the Palm OS 4.0

I would love to see Centipede on the Palm, but would also like to see some of the Sega classics.

I actually have a copy of Centipede on my Palm. It was distributed as freeware by Mobile Generation (www.mobilegeneration.com) a while ago. It's actually very well written, but for some reason (maybe trademark/copyright issues), they stopped distributing the free games on their web site.

The version I have only allows left/right movement.

Just an FYI

Like the previous poster stated - Centipede has been around awhile and so has Asteroids. I know Asteroids was pulled due to licensing infringements. It was actually for sale about a year ago. I have both and they both play extremely well on the Palm. Asteroids is actually a great game.

Shuffle Puck?

Common, when is someone gonna port this?

Try Ultimate Air Hockey-on Palm Gear. It's color and fun.

Palm & Games

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/13/2001 3:54:44 PM #
I like my Palm! I like Games!

However; I have been working with my management for several months trying to show the usefulness of the Palm in a technical services environment. The only thing Bean Counters and Executives see the Palm as is an expensive DayTimer and/or toy. Having "A New Release of Hot Games" is not helping the future of Handhelds in an industry where quick, easy, anywhere access to log books, procedures, manuals, and diagrams is a very good thing. I, for one, would like to see the gaming industry stick to the GameBoy.

my 2 cents

I cant wait for the sega games. Most Palm games are race, puzzle, or old arcade games. I cant wait for other games. I hope sega will make Crazy taxi will Race Fever like graphics. I think its possible.

I can't wait until I can play photo-realistic simulation games on my Palm. It will be really cool when the palm can support CD based games like Playstation 2.
I can attach my portable palm-cd drive to my universal hotsync connector and.......

Geez! This smacks of Windows CEism. I'm sure glad I bought a 64mb mmc for my m505. Sound like bloated times are ahead for the Palm platform :)

Let's not forget hoe Sega likes to promise its customers the sun with the moon and stars thrown in, and then drops its products the moment any competition comes around. I would put too much faith in Sega ever developing software for the Palm as long as companies like Astraware are around.

Absolutely right. Can you say SEGA CD??? How about DREAMCAST? Very good boys and girls! Now lets try a more difficult one. Say PALM GAMES

Game Time

altema @ 6/14/2001 12:13:36 PM #
It will be interesting to see how some of the games come out, and if they are up to the level of Zap!2000, Rock Blaster, and Ababall. At least it is good news for World Wide Widget Works and their game pad. How about a steering wheel game pad? Better yet, how about little gas and brake pedal sensors that you can wear hidden inside your shoes, with a cable that you run up your leg to a steering wheel that's disguised as a wristwatch. In the name of common sense, we need to balance the gaming experience with portablility. A simple gamepad with a steering wheel might fly for the real driving game fans, an I might even buy one to use at home, but I would never carry one around with me.

Back to the fun side, I would love to see Zone Raiders, even if it had just a few levels. The ability to network would be the killer feature, and is one of the reasons I installed a network at home for the desktop version of Zone Raiders (and NFS). As far as graphics are concerned, we have already seen what Ababall and Zap!2000/2016 can do, so I don't think that will be a problem. Memory issues may be more of a concern. I had second thoughts about my wordprocessor because it took up more than 400k. Ababall takes up more than 500k of real estate, and I would have dropped it immediately if it did not make my mouth hang open. Zap!2000 only takes up 188k, but I've played all the levels and may delete it temporarily until the new levels are released. I may put up with large memory requirements for my relational databases, but not for a game!

Games are Fun

Hugo @ 6/15/2001 7:44:03 PM #
Don't dis games. Thats one area that PocketPCs have over palms, and if Palm or others made the next-gen Palm (maybe with 200mhz ARM proc.) a good games platform, they could potentially increase their sales.

PS in reply to the lamer who said, dispite the size, Jot is better than a keyboard, is wrong. Jot is crap. I use simpliWrite, and its good. I wrote this post in about 2 min. using my normal handwriting! Thats probably better than some k\bs
