Good, with Datebk4 out of the way, maybe Pimlico can get back onto the Datebk3 v3-1 beta which has been out for a long time now.

Why would they go backwards? Don't you think DB3 is retired?

You can download it at the bottom of this page:

I wish it said what the changes were, so I could tell if it is worth it.

There's a changelog inside the archive...

Pimlico site has a e-mail anouncement sign up for betas. I got a message about preview "c" right after the message about preview "b". It said not to use "b", but wait for "c". That's probably why it is not directly accessable.

Datebk4

Since they have released Datebk4 why should they go back to 3? Pay the money and upgrade to 4. ;)

I like Datebk3 just cause it's smaller and doesn't try to take over all the PIM apps. I don't need most of what's in Datebk4. I doubt they're going to spend much more time developing it though.

If you like DB3, try actionnames; it's my fav.

I also dropped a registered DB4 because I got sick of it's appropriation of the hard buttons, in the release notes they wrote: "* Changed default to have Addr/ToDo/Memo buttons just invoke ROM apps as new users are unfortunately getting wrong impression that this cannot be trivially changed." Does this mean that can be turned off in DB4, I couldn't figure that out. I guess that means I'm a "new user." Any Answers?

Its not trivial, it took me a while. Theres a Menu in the upper left corner if you tap. One of the selections is Preferences. Uncheck the Apps buttons there.

here's how:
tap on the icon in the upper left-hand corner that drops down the memo/addr/todo menu. select preferences. (first tap may just open the addressbook window. tap again to get the menu.) halfway down the preferences panel is "app buttons: addr | todo | memo" simply tap the buttons on or off as needed. i have them all off, after trying various combinations and then saying to heck with the whole thing.
wow, reading the entire datebk4 users manual *did* pay off.

I moved back to DateBk3 from DateBk4 for a couple of reasons ...

1. DateBk3 is smaller and can therefore be loaded into the FlashRAM of my Palm m505 (it's one of the multi-lingual ones with the very small free RAM that will not accomodate DateBk4).

2. DateBk3 is fine for my needs ... I don't need all of the bells and whistles of DateBk4. Why double the amount of RAM it uses on my Palm for no good reason?

Clie Cable

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/11/2001 1:11:22 PM #
Anyone know if your laptop has to be powered up for the Clie to charge, or will it charge like the laptop battery does if the computer is just plugged in?

Power is only supplied to the USB port when the system is powered up. Unless Ford makes your laptop, in which case the cigarette lighter sockt would be powered when you shut of the unit. :-)

DateBk4/HandEra

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/11/2001 1:22:57 PM #
Some of work Pimlico is doing to DateBk4 includes some support for the HandEra 330 and other new devices. This mostly deals with display problems due to the non-standard forms DateBk4 uses. I don't know if it will include support for smaller fonts, collapsable graffiti, or the jog button. The latest beta solves the big problems.

Turning off DateBK's use of the hard buttons is easy, but not intuitive. Tap the icon at the upper left next to the date in the title bar. Select Preferences, then turn off any or all of the app buttons.
The new release improves support for the HandEra 330 & Clie. It also adds a History DB (for purged appts) & other general improvements.

Free Palm from CitiBank

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/12/2001 11:49:27 AM #
The article didn't have a link to citibank and I can't find the offer on www.citibank.com - can anyone confirm or deny this and perhaps provide a link to where Citibank has the offer? thanx
