Comments on: Protect Your Palm with the Chameleon m5

Scribble is making a hard case for the m500 series. The Chameleon m5 is made from injection-molded ABS plastic to provide protection from twisting, bending and shocks. It also has a cutout to safely store a MMC or SD card. It sells for $32. For an additional $5, a belt clip is available.

At last!

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/27/2001 3:54:43 PM #
I have been waiting for a good hard case for my 505! I was so depressed this morning because Palm finaly wrote back and said they were not sure if they were going to be making a hard case for the 500 series.

I tried the rinoskin aluminum slider and it was no good. I hope this one is better!

Anyone have one of these for the V series? If so how did it compare to the hardcase that Palm made?

Mitch

I have the Scribble ChameleonV for my Palm VxLE and I love it. This is a very good case. The hard plastic will protect your Palm from just about anything you can put it through and it looks cool too! You also get cool colored covers that you can change out to change the look of the case, so now you can be stylin'. IMHO, I highly recommend this case.

Oh, I forgot to add, this case is LIGHT years ahead of what Palm had to offer. You could easily bend or break the Palm case, not so with this one.

I got a demo unit that they allowed me to keep after reviewing it. I had made a few modifications to make it fit and function better for me. Hopefully my input has helped in the design of the m500 case. Anyway, my most recent modification to my case is a tooled leather insert. It's permanently adhered to the case, but I like it much better than the plastic colored inserts. :)

Finally (I Hope!)
Just a couple of questions:
One of the things I love most about my m505 is that it fits well in a pocket.. How much bigger does this case make it? Is it similar in size to the palmv hardcases from Palm and Rhinoskin (not the slider the form fitting one)?

For the fablock can you take the post out when you don't want to hang the unit on your belt or is the post permanently attatched to the case?

Hope the answers are what I want to hear!

case sounds interesting..... anyone know if you can hot sync the 505 while in this case?

RE: At last!
GregGaub @ 7/28/2001 12:40:19 AM #
Answers:

1) anyone know if you can hot sync the 505 while in this case? - Answer: Yes, the same was as other hard cases. Flip the back open as well as the front, then hook your palm into the cradle while the case hangs off the side.

2) How much bigger does this case make it? Is it similar in size to the palmv hardcases from Palm and Rhinoskin (not the slider the form fitting one)? - Answer: No. It's bigger than the PalmV hard case, because of the thicker plastic and interior padding. The total thickness of the Chameleon-V is easily twice that of the naked V. You're also looking at an additional centimeter or so in each other dimension. It doesn't fit as well in your pocket in this case (if at all), but that's what the "fablock" is for. ;-) The m5 version of the case looks almost identical to the v version.

3) For the fablock can you take the post out when you don't want to hang the unit on your belt or is the post permanently attatched to the case? - Answer: The fablock post unscrews from the case for use without the belt clip. A very nice feature.

Hope the answers are what you want to hear! ;-)

I don't have the m5 case, but reviews for the V version are bound to be fairly accurate. My review is at http://www.seapug.com/ in the reviews section.

what did you not like about the rhinoskin?

505 Hard Cases

I talked with Rhinoskin.com and they said they would have an aluminum hard case for the 505 out in August. I think I'll wait for it.

I talked to Rhinoskin in May, when I got my 505, and was promised a case in June. I'm still waiting. Draw your own conclusions.

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/27/2001 7:27:21 PM #

thanks

try one of their other addresses, like support/sales/info/webmaster or some such. I've never had a problem with communications from them. It might take a day or two, but not a whole week. If it took this long, they might be having technical difficulties with the address you mailed to, or that the order form is sending to.

palm attachment?

pat @ 7/28/2001 11:07:40 AM #
how does the palm attach to the case?
RE: palm attachment?
GregGaub @ 7/28/2001 12:29:04 PM #
it holds the Palm in with a rail thing, like the stylus. The m5 case will only fit m50x devices, since the m50x devices have a smaller stylus slot on one side for cases (screw the lefties, eh, Palm?).
In other words, NO VELCRO! YAY!

Guys, there are a ZILLION hard case offerings for the Palm V. They are aluminum (some are alloy) are are featured anodized in every color imaginable. Those are TRUE hard cases. I'm sure you've seen them. They retail average of $40 CDN. Folks in Toronto, Ontario will find them at First Markham Place, Pacific Mall, some place near Bay and King Street, and a few others.

Now, it'll just take a bit of time for them to redo the model to fit the M505. Don't settle for PLASTIC!

do you know where at Pacific mall?, I was there this weekend and couldn't find any.

Are you just talking Palm V cases or are there m505 cases at any of these places as well?

Re: Rhinoskin Aluminum Hard Case

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/29/2001 12:32:02 PM #
i just purchased a rhinoskin aluminum hard case that is suppose to fit the palm v... but it does fit the on the right side of the m505. since i don't use the stock styus; i just decided this is will work for me.

anyway, just alittle info... if you guys that are anxious to get ahold of a good hard case.

although, the plastic case looks appealing (seeing it fits the m500/505 on the left side), but i use my palm alot under hard condtions and feel safer with my aluminum case. which rhinoskin or anyother company has somehow dragged their feet on.

... if i was to buy a plastic case; i'd wait til someone reviews and tests it out.

HotSync/IR capabilities

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/29/2001 11:59:49 PM #
Does anyone know if the Scribble case allows you to place the m505 in the Hotsync cradle whilst in the case? This is possibly a stupid question, however, I currently have the leather EB Slipper case and it allows this. Also, is there a transparent "port" at the top of the case (or any other mechanism) to allow for IR to other devices whilst in the case?

Thanks in advance.

Scribble Out of business?

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/30/2001 1:58:21 AM #
I'd ordered a m505 hard case with face plates one week ago July 22nd, since then I've not heard from them, they took my credit card #. I email them 3 times since then, and I just phone their sales office with no reply
All users please do not order through their web till you find out what's hapening. Most likely I'm out $50.

In regards to comments on not trusting a plastic case, this is high-impact ABS plastic, like what hard hats are made of. They're as good or better than metal.

In fact, you can find a review on Scribble's site where a Palm in the case survived a drop from a moving airplane!
