Comments on: Sony Clie PEG-N760 Review

When Sony announced the N710C, the best operating system available was Palm OS 3.5. Not too long after its release, though, Palm came out with OS 4. Sony has now released a handheld that is essentially the N710C with OS 4.1. The PEG-N760C offers a 320 by 320 screen that can display 65 thousand colors, a built-in MP3 player, and much more. News Editor Ed Hardy brings us this review.

I was a Handera Man. I didn''t need no stinkin'' color. I didn''t need no silly MP3 player. Well one look at this thing and I am in love. I stayed up for hours playing Joust and Spyhunter in color. I have pictures of my wife and some medical stuff I proudly display. I even cut my grass yesterday while listing to Dave Matthews. Sure it is more $$$ (that 128mb MS hurt), but the WOW factor is over the top. I am running TomeRaider (with 40megs of reference) and about 20 megs of medical reference off the stick with Pidirect - no problems. This thing is amazing!

I also am a recent Handera convert. I agree with all the above. I opted to save on audio capabilities (not an interest of mine) but once I saw and used the screen I had to have one.

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 4:06:07 PM #
Yeah, it all sounds good, and I'm getting closer to this color thing - I just wish it was a leetle bit cheepa. My future choice between PDA's will probably be either the HandEra or the 610. But how could Sony put out a PDA without TV remote control capabilities included? !-)

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 4:18:58 PM #
I was once a Clié man. Now, I'm all over the Handera 330. For Palm functionality, monochrome is superior. If you want true WOW factor, take a look at the PocketPC 2002. I have my other reasons against a $500 Palm handheld, but this long rant would suffice for now.

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 8:02:41 AM #
That's where I am. Happy with Handera, but looking to the next generation of PPC's.

FYI, if you're looking for hi-res color cheap, you can get the N610C for $320.

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 10:20:20 AM #
I'm quite happy with my HandEra 330 too. I'll wait for someone to actually come out with a good color screen for a PDA, not these sad excuses for ones that people claim to be awesome. I really hope cheap OLED (or some other) technology is just around the corner.

Those taking a peak at PPC might be interested to know the Toshiba e570 is just $569 (that's just $69 more than the above-reviewed CLIE). To quote that giant intellect, Britney: Oops, I did it again.

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/9/2001 7:06:56 PM #
Sure, where are you going to find the Toshiba? Newsflash: the only way to get one will be if your a corporate customer buying in bulk. Besides, most of the population doesn't want a pocket pc.

So when you say you "did it again", I assume you're referring to making a post with no relevance that no one is really interested in.

RE: Converted
I.M. Anonymous @ 12/13/2001 10:05:35 PM #
You can buy the Toshiba direct from Toshiba or with the Audiovox label. Interesting that you claim to speak for "most of the population".

I just got my boss to buy me a Clie 770c (=760c in the US) I love it!

Positive points:
1.) clear crisp display:
2.) fast
3.) MP3

Negative points:
1.) price of the unit, and (sony)accesoiries
2.) flap/lid is very flimsy and unpractical (and no hardcase available)
3.) litle 3rd party accesoiries

Other wise, I just want to confirm that it work perfectly with Windows XP, just Sony might'nt support it (yet)

Get your boss to buy you one..

As person with a Sony Clie and Windows XP i feel that it is absolutely ridiculous that the Sony Clie model(PEG-T415) I have is less powerful and in all ways less superior to the N760C yet is Windows XP compitable.

Wireless, Lefty?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 3:17:43 PM #
When will Sony over internet access. I would give the a sony a try if I could only get e-mails. Currently have old Vx w/Omnisky.

How about a lefty version so we can use the jog-dial and write.

RE: Wireless, Lefty?
rldunn @ 10/4/2001 3:32:29 PM #
Sony already offers the mylo service (www.mylo.com).

RE: Wireless, Lefty?
Ed @ 10/4/2001 3:39:49 PM #
At this point, the only wireless modem offered by the MYLO service will not work with the N series. I've been promised by a Sony spokesperson that there will be one by the end of the year, though.

qurgh @ 10/4/2001 3:41:19 PM #
Just a side note to the lefty thing. I got a N760C over the weekend and I love it. Now when I read on this thing I can use either my left or right hand and still use the jog dial fine. In fact I prefer to use the jog dial with my the handheld in my right hand, since I have bigger hands and its eiser to use one finger to roll the jog dial, and one finger to use the back button. I only wish I could write with my left and then I would be be able to hold it in my right all the time and not strain my thumb trying to use the jog dial and back button with my left hand...

So, if you thinking about lefty versions, go try one out and see what you think.

As for wirless, sony has myclo or something like that.. (I don't rememeber the exact name and I can't be arsed to look it up)

Flip cover

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 3:40:47 PM #
I've noticed the flip cover on the 320 is different from the 600-700 series. It seems a lot more secure. Why did use a better cover attachment for the cheaper series, and vice versa?

Just a thought...

RE: Flip cover
rldunn @ 10/4/2001 3:56:34 PM #
I respectfully disagree with you. I had the 320 and now have the 610. I will admit the the cover attachments are different, but I didn't feel that the 320 solution was more secure. In fact, I knocked the 320 cover off several times and I've only knocked my 610 cover off once so far. Plus, I think the cover on the 610/710/760 looks a little classier with a better looking attachment. YMMV.

RE: Flip cover
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 7:08:37 PM #
Thanks for the input. I don't own a Sony (yet), and my opinion was based on checking out the display units. The 320's cover looked better to me at the time.

The cover issue will become moot for me, anyway, because whenever I do purchase a Sony, I'm hoping to be able to get a Vaja or E&B case for it.

Wow...my day was just made today!! I got the $399 N710 and now it has OS 4.1...talk about a great suprise when it worked (and it was easy to do!) I had purchased the N610 and liked it so much but wanted mp3 playback too, so I sold that one to my sister, but was soon missing the better response time of the N610 and the larger color palette. Thanks

RE: What about the 710c?
rldunn @ 10/5/2001 1:12:08 PM #
To Mike Cane: I don't think we're out of the woods yet. Wait until someone has a warranty issue, especially something totally unrelated to the upgrade. Sony will turn them down, and they'll complain about that and the then again about the fact that Sony took so long to offer the upgrade that they had to do it themselves. On a different note, it's too bad you're headed over to the PPC camp. I predict you'll miss the jog dial and will sit over there looking at all the amazing things Sony will release over the next year, and you'll want to come back :)

To the previous poster whose membership is pending: Be patient. You just have to wait until Yahoo can process it. It will probably happen soon.

RE: What about the 710c?
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/8/2001 7:27:12 AM #
Okay, so what's the difference between a 710 with the upgrade, and a 760?

Do you think the price difference between the two can justify the difference in features/hardware, now that there is the update for the 710?

RE: What about the 710c?
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/15/2001 9:01:01 AM #
To users who've successfully upgraded, there is no apparent difference.
That being said, Sony claims that a "proper" upgrade (presumably one they officially provide and charge for) includes more than just upgrading the ROMs, although they have not specified what else. The DIY upgrade also voids Sony's warrantee.

RE: What about the 710c?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/26/2002 11:19:22 AM #
There is a difference or 2. Those of us whop are in possession of upgraded 710c's (nicknamed 711c or something like that -see the palmblvd user board) have a blue flip cover, not a silver one. In addition, some copies of the 760c ROM DO NOT have PhotoStand. Finally, the upgraded 711c has the new PGP, but you are stuck with the old version on the desktop. My 2 cents.

Hey, if you want to buy a supposedly "multimedia" PDA which has buttons so unusable you'd never want to play any button-friendly games, well... more power to you.

Seriously, I did consider the Sony devices when I bought my m505. Just couldn't stand the buttons (well, and the larger size and higher weight...).

I wouldn't call anyone crazy for springing for this sucker. Lots of cool features, I admit. OTOH - to take the view that folks are stupid to buy an m505 is just as closed minded...

Fighting whether the clie or the 505 is better is pointless. ITS A PALM DEVICE. It's nice, it works, it's simple enough to use and it's not a PocketPC! ;)

RE: Any comments from m505 zealots?

M505 is a "spartan" color device. But is small and comfortable to carry around. I bought it (in Italy) and I 'm satisfied even if I think that the price is too high for what it offers, dangerously near Ipaq price. The n760 is a very nice device, the only that could compete with Ppc. But they should have fitted it with Dragonball vz 66mhz. (sorry for my bad english)

I own a M505 its a great palm but the color screen is a joke. thats why I sold my M505 and purchased a sony.
It just makes more sence. The Palm company help in the development of the sony, You would think that palm would have at least a clear colored screen. Why would palm not put out a clear screen knowing sony will. Look to palm in the future with the same cloudy display.

I consider Palm OS devices to be primarily a productivity tool with differing degrees of "coolness" by virtue of features such as color, design features, and multi-media features. Clearly the Sony N760C is the coolest of them all. I personally, though, like the Palm m505 best because of the simplicity of design, and the form factor. If I wanted the size and multi-media capability of the Sony, I would definitely opt for a new PPC such as the new HP device. As long as I'm committed to the simplicity of the Palm as a productivity tool, I'm loyal to the m505. If I ultimately decide that I want my PDA to be a real computing/entertainment/multi-media device, I would bypass the Sony, and go straight to the PPC.

RE: Any comments from m505 zealots?
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/23/2001 4:22:11 PM #
Yesterday, I ordered my N760C. Why? Because each of the FOUR m505s I had purchased in late summer were returned to Staples. Each failed either to a defect in the unit or the charging/sync stand after days (and even just hours) of use in our office. And, Palm didn't respond to my extensive letter about these design problems.

I bought the 760 without much research - just on its specs alone. Glad to see the positive reviews.

I have an IBM WorkPad c505, same exact as the Sony, I think they are both good products, just waiting for Sony to drop the price of the unit and memory sticks. I did however decide to avoid the Pocket PC (iPaq) to be exact. The palm is so much better, lighter, and I think the abilities will be there for the Sony as well.

How is the screen and MP3 sound with a large memory stick, does it truly blow away the screen on Palm 505's or is it the MP3 feature that is the Plus.

Sony does not ''suck''
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/17/2002 8:25:43 AM #
For all you crack heads out there that claim "Sony Sucks" I have only one thing to say... Put the Crack Pipe Down!!
The 505 doesn't even compare to the n760C, Take a look at the memmory sticks for example, wow, you can get a whole what, 16 mb for the 505? I mean... really!!
Also I don't quite know why people think there arent any 3rd party accessories for the Nseries, your obviously not looking hard enough, there not one thing you can get for the palm that you can't for the clie.
As far as "The buttons are too hard to push" what a joke, thats all you can come up with? I haven't had a single problem pushing my buttons...
If you're going to "bash" the Clie, at least come up with somthing reasonable.

Screen Update Speeds : 760C vs 710C vs 610C

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/4/2001 6:04:18 PM #
In the initial reviews of the 710C I read that the screen update speed was significantly slower than for other Palm OS devices. Then in reviews of the 610C I heard that the screen update speed was faster than on the 710C - "probably because of the newer OS version".

Has anyone compared the screen update speed of the 760C with that of the 710C and the 610C ?

If so I'd be glad to hear ... I hate slow screen updates ... that's why I favour Palm OS over Pocket PC devices ;o)

Objection, Your Honor!

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 1:53:13 AM #
Perhaps the last sentence needs a little justification.
How about adding "Palm OS" in front of "handheld"?

If I really want MP3 on a PDA, I'd go for a PPC.
No Palm OS device so far is worth $500.

RE: Objection, Your Honor!
skoty @ 10/5/2001 2:09:53 AM #
Handspring Visor Neo ($199), Sounds Good MP3 Springboard module ($100), the look on the face of a PPC user when it crashes (priceless). For everyone else, there's the Palm OS.

Overruled
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 8:50:23 AM #
> If I really want MP3 on a PDA, I'd go for a PPC.

You're very much in the minority. Not just here but everywhere. The last sentence stands. People who want a GOOD handheld and MP3 player will get the CLIE. People who want to pay over $600 for a brick too heavy to carry around can get a Ppc.

Clarification
skoty @ 10/5/2001 9:15:23 AM #
When I said "the look on the face of a PPC user when it crashes" I was referring to the PPC, not the handspring. The point of bringing up the handspring is that you could get an MP3 enabled PalmOS device for $300. (Cheaper if you went with the Visor Deluxe or Visor Solo)

PPC users cannot argue about price when the price of PPC devices continue to go up with each new release.

RE: Objection, Your Honor!
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 9:25:47 AM #
Hey I own a CLIE and I love it, but you have to keep your comments objective. I seriously considered the Ipaq when buying, but the only real reason i didnt get it awas teh batter life, its not that big, and you have to love the styling. It can play Quake also, but i owuld rather have 12 hrs of batt life than 4 hrs, and I alrady have Mem Sticks.

Thick screen covering

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/5/2001 10:15:07 AM #
I'm assuming the 760 has the same awful thick glass/plastic covering over the screen that the 610 and 710 have. Why do the reviews on this site keep failing to mention that? I don't see how anyone can find it acceptable, it's like the screen is off at a distance through a window.

RE: Thick screen covering
rldunn @ 10/5/2001 10:37:08 AM #
It's never bothered me once on my 610. Are you looking at the screen from an angle? That's the only time you even partially notice it.

It isn't the screen covering... It is the space between the touch surface and the display screen. The space is there to allow for the sidelight. The greater space also helps to better illuminate the screen, as the sidelight is a little higher, so I guess it is a trade off worth living with.

DOES NOT sync with a Mac!

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/6/2001 8:50:47 PM #
Ed Hardy, did you really try to hotsync the 760C to a Mac? The 760C does not sync with any Mac "right out of the box." Even Markspace, the creators of The Missing Sync are aware of this.

RE: DOES sync with a Mac!
Ed @ 10/7/2001 11:24:36 AM #
I used a N760C as my primary handheld for more than a week when writing this review. I HotSynced it almost every day with my PowerBook via infrared. I never had any problems at all.

I'd suggest you read the excellent Clié-Mac Page at:
http://homepage.mac.com/cliemacpage/hotsync.html
which will tell you what you need to do to get your Mac working with your N760C.

Then maybe you should have WRITTEN that you hotsync via infrared. The tendency of new Clie users with Macs is to use the usb cradle to sync. THEN they will be at a loss how to sync it if their Macs are not IR-equipped.

RE: DOES sync with a Mac!
Ed @ 10/8/2001 9:04:26 AM #
I was just tryng to give you the exact circumstances that I used. The Clie-Mac Page agrees that all Mac users can HotSync their N760C's, whether they are using IR or the cradle.

I have an iMac (flower power) at home. 27 sage, ruby, indigo iMacs at the office... all cannot sync with my 760C (I used to sync without problems with my 710C). I used Palm Desktop 2.6.3 and The Missing Sync. Am I missing something? I think that OS 4.1 is the culprit.

I see from your site you don't actually have a 760. What you have is a 710 that you used the unsupported upgrade on. You may have found a flaw in the upgrade. Can you reload 3.5?

RE: DOES NOT sync with a Mac!
jsuplido @ 10/8/2001 9:29:31 PM #
I have no regrets for what I did. :) All that I've experienced in what I wrote in my site (the software testing parts) can be duplicated by those who own the original 760... and would get the same results. I don't think there something a "true" 760 can do which my upgraded 710 could not do.

Are you trying to sync with OS X? If not, what version?

RE: DOES NOT sync with a Mac!
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/9/2001 5:28:53 PM #
Editor:

No, the Clie-Mac site confirms that you still CANNOT sync the 760 to a Mac via USB. (And infrared is only a possibility for owners of the original iMac, and some PowerBooks. Besides, IR syncing is very slow.) Where do you see otherwise on their site? Even their discussion board has people struggling with this.

Mark/Space confirms this incompatibility and they are working on an update to Missing Link. Read their FAQ!

It's really important that your review point this out, as there will be MANY disappointed Mac users who were misled by your review.

RE: DOES NOT sync with a Mac!
Ed @ 10/9/2001 5:54:07 PM #
* sigh * You are absolutely correct. Once Sony had it working with Palm OS 4.0, I didn't think they'd break it with OS 4.1, especially after it worked successfully for me via infrared. IR is usually the first thing to get messed up, not USB. I have edited the article. Sorry if I steered anyone wrong. Thanks for being insistent enough to finally get it through my thick head that I might possibly be wrong.

Everybody here just take a deep breath. Everything is going to be alright. No, nothing is wrong with Palm Desktop 2.6.3. No, nothing is wrong with PalmOS 4.1. No, nothing is wrong with MarkSpace's OUTSTANDING MissingSync (not Link) product. Just go to the following URL and download the v2.1 beta upgrade to MissingSync, and your 710-turned-760 will do just fine with your Mac. Better?

> nothing is wrong with PalmOS 4.1

But OS 4.0 hoysyncs with a mac with out having to buy $30 software and OS 4.1 does NOT. That means OS 4.1 is broken. Nice that MarkSpace updated their software but I'm still pissed at Sony.

RE: DOES NOT sync with a Mac!
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/19/2001 5:25:39 AM #
>I'm still pissed at Sony.

Sony never claim to support the Mac. Therefore you have no right to be pissed at them. The fact that OS4 worked was a bonus for Mac users who got it, the fact that 4.1 doesn't means that when Sony built 4.1 they didn't bother to make sure that it worked on the Mac - which is perfectly fair as it is an un-supported platform.

Now personally I think that Sony should produce a cross platform CD and include "The Missing Sync" for mac users, this would give them acces to a significant number of users who are significantly influenced by good design and high end features (That's why I bought one!)

What about the 'MP3' playback?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/10/2001 12:43:58 AM #
I remember reading somewhere that Sony "MP3 players" don't actually play MP3s; that they convert them to some other, more "controllable" format, then play them, and that they keep track of how many times you copy a given track from your computer to your audio device, and only allow a limited number of copies. The source (can't remember what it was) also mentioned that all Sony digital audio players require the more expensive "MagicGate" memory sticks, and can't use regular mem sticks for audio. That was a while ago, though; does all this apply to the N760? (And/or the N710?)

RE: What about the 'MP3' playback?
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/11/2001 10:12:19 AM #
You can drag and drop MP3s straight into the Clie on Windows desktop, if you use version 2.0 of Audio Player, which is supplied on the CD which comes with the main unit.

You can use normal blue memory sticks to do this as well - you don't have to use the white Magic Gate ones. You can also do this as many times as you want. You're thinking about OpenMG jukebox, the software which allows you to "check in" and "check out" music.

The "other format" you're thinking about is ATRAC3, which I've never heard but some people reckon it provides better music quality than MP3. It's a bit of a hassle though, when all your music library on your desktop is in MP3 format.

RE: What about the 'MP3' playback?
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/27/2001 9:42:01 AM #
I got my N760C because of its MP3 capability, but guess what? It simply won't play an MP3. I created an MP3 from an ancient, unencrypted CD and followed all of Sony's (poorly written) directions, and after much swearing got the MP3 file onto the device. Unfortunately, when I try to play it, the display says:
"This track is not available because of either of the following reasons . . ."

And perhaps most frustrating of all, there is NO phone number for customer support ANYWHERE in the documentation--just a "handy" (i.e., useless) web support address. HELP! I want to talk to a live human, and now, when I pay $500 for something that I can't make work the way it's supposed to. I'm taking the thing back if Sony can't get me up and running in 3 days.

RE: What about the 'MP3' playback?
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 2:21:49 PM #
The support number is automatically supplied in the address book of your device. It's 847-262-7256. They are actually quite helpful and patient.

RE: What about the 'MP3' playback?
I.M. Anonymous @ 12/30/2001 8:36:36 AM #
MP3s absolutely play well on the 760 on the purple sticks. I am an MP3 rookie but with a little effort straightened out a similar problem. The following post address MP3s thoroughly:
http://www.palmblvd.com/boards/sonyclie760/messages/1145.html
and/or here
http://www.palmblvd.com/boards/sonyclie760/messages/1127.html

Key for me was the bitrate had to be at least 96kb quality to play on the Clie (or so someone claims). As for transfers, set the Clie on Audio Player/Options/Transfer... On your computer you should now be able to see the MS under My Computer and can simply do a drag and drop to ...Palm/PROGRAMS/MSAUDIO without bothering with MSExport. Hope this helps.

760 can now sync using Missing Sync beta update

jsuplido @ 10/10/2001 7:37:42 PM #
It works! But the beta expires on October 15th.

Killer PDA

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/11/2001 12:12:22 PM #
I just bought one of these about a week ago. I really shopped a lot before I made my purchase. This is a great PDA - nice features, sleek and "cool" looking. The display is awesome, MP3 playback quality through the supplied headphones is excellent. I really like the Memory Stick support. I am still toying with all the apps and games on it. If you buy this Clie - you won't be disappointed.

RE: Killer PDA
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/23/2001 10:21:03 AM #
I agree with you. Only one question, the games that you are refering to, did they come with Clie installed or on the CD ????

I haven't got a single game, despite Sony's name "personal entertainment..."

RE: Killer PDA
I.M. Anonymous @ 12/12/2001 12:13:32 PM #
I believe there's no game found inside the installation CD. If you are talking about games like "bejewlled" or the racing game, you need to go to website to download the trial...

Unlike what was being told on the website or instruction manual, there's NO thirdparty application found in the installation cd.

There are three trial game applications on the installation CD. They are good for about 14 days.

PEG-N770 in UK - the differences

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/23/2001 8:47:02 AM #
I've just purchased a PEG-N770 in the UK and there are a couple of differences from the N760 apart from the obvious address one.

Firstly, some of the extra apps are different/missing (but these are typically shareware style things anyway) and secondly you don't get a memory stick with it (I seem to recall reading that the 760 comes with an 8Mb memory stick).

Cheers,
Alex White

Enquiry on Sony Clie 760

scenic_mmx @ 11/15/2001 4:20:10 AM #
Hi all, I am contemplating to get the Sony Clie 760.
Its sleek design and MP3 playback feature is my main motivation. Looks cool with my Titanium Powerbook.

Ok, ok. I might have problem to sync with my mac but I am sure Markspace will eventually offer the solution.

What I want to no more is that whether I MUST use ONLY MagicGate MS instead of of the regular MS.

I have a couple of extra regular MS from SOny Digital still camera and what a waste if I can't use them with
the new Clie 760. Might as well get a Palm505 if I can't use the regular MS.

RE: Enquiry on Sony Clie 760

I have the Sony Clie 760C. It can handle both MG and regular MS. The MagicGate is required if you would like to be able to play copyrighted music files. The regular MS cards you have will be able to store regular MP3's from them on the clie.

I.M. Anonymous @ 12/21/2001 7:54:32 AM #
It looks like the 760 Clie will not let you play mp3's that a friend sends you, but only mp3's that you pull straight off a cd. If this is the case, I'm taking it back. Copyright be damned...I'll not let sony dictate what I listen to. If there is some way around this, please let me know, or its going back tonight.... this is a croc o' crap.

There are no issues with self-made / copied Mp3z on my device. I have mp3z released by internet groups, mp3z ripped by me, mp3z ripped by friends. They ALL work on a standard Sony Memory card that I pulled from my Sony Camera. The only thing is you have to make sure to setup the proper directories on the memory card so that the player can see them!! After that, just open the mp3 player and listen away!!

RE: Clie N760 or Plam m505 ??
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/7/2002 2:55:14 PM #
Yes, the screen is bad on the 505 when compared to the N760C.

The N760C would be your better choice of the 2, especially if you want integrated MP3 capability.

The T615C that is expected out by the end of the month is very thin (M505 thin) and has a comparable screen to that of the N series and a supercharged infrared port with remote control software. It does not have the integrated MP3 like the N760C however.

It really depends what you want. At the time of the T615C release, they will probably be about the same price. I own a N710C that I upgraded to N760C status and I would not even think about the T series yet.

Its real nice, especially with the Stowaway I picked up for Christmas. ;-)1

I have been a devoted Palm user and was the first person to get the M505 here in Vancouver when they were made available last year here in Vancouver, BC. That said I really do love the 505... untill I saw the Clie 760c. Wow. The color is an obvious huge difference but above and beyond that is the high res. I don't see as many users commenting on the high res color. That is what converted me. I can actually USE spreadshhets and wordprosessed documents. I can see a USABLE week at a glance with the high res Action Names. Palm really dropped the ball being beaten to the market with this device. Sure the MP3 player is cool and I use it all the time but the high res and vibrant color was the closer. By the way, I bought and tried to use a Compaq Pocket PC latest and greatest for a week and ended up returning it for the Clie. What ws I thinking, good thing I snapped out of it.

CLIE eco system

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/2/2002 4:40:10 AM #
I purchased a Sony Clie after comparing the screen to a palm M505.
Lets be honest the screen on a PDA is the most important thing. That’s what you interface with, touch yeah! Just run quicksheet on a Clie and you know what I mean - you can see a lot of data on the screen.
But.......
You would expect better from Sony. I took one my Clie back and got it replaced when I noticed a spot of under the screen, now you might think I'm being picky but when you buy this device your going only for the screen and the dust was really noticeable – in your face every time I looked at the thing.
Anyway, so I have my lovely new one, then to my horror I notice some dust on my new one, well I thought it was dust until it MOVED, under a magnify glass it appeared to be a small furry insect!
**** I thought my Clie was so clever it had developed its own Eco system, but needless to say the insect didn’t like my pen strokes and soon passed away, and after a few shakes it disappeared off the screen.
Now have dust appearing in various positions.
Should I take it back? Am I being too picky? Does someone know how to blow the dust out?
Help me.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/25/2002 9:35:28 AM #
Go for the Sony pda. I have read a lot a about m515 and at last I got the Sony because:

- Screen & colours (yet better than m515)
- MP3 player (it has a Motorola dedicated processor to do that and I almost sure that m515 wont play mp3 never)
- I got a little free application that amazely puts little fonts (very readble) to the applications and I get much more text space (excellent to read books, such the Bible Reader) and it will not run with m515
- Memory Stick easy of use. With a application that comes it emulates a removable disk drive with my PC and the data exchange is so cool and easy as using a zip-drive. With Diskmount, I can make even no application that recocnize the MS work with it as in the main memory :)

I am very happy and this is the best pda I could get, for while ;)

Note Pad is an application Palm wrote for its own handhelds. It is not part of the Palm OS so it will never be found on Sony handhelds, for the same reason you won't see MSGate included with an m515.

I'd suggest you look into BugMe! or DiddleBug, two applications which do close to that same thing.

Does anyone know if you can use Clie 760 to perform TV RF controls?

You can download Omniremote pro from Yahoo PDA downloads. It would let you use your Clie as a remote

But is the distance acheived with the N760 as good as the T615?

Listening to Soundfiles & Converting Movies

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/13/2002 5:19:51 PM #

1) Does anybody know the best way (program) to listen to a WAV file on the Clie? Do I have to convert it to an .MP3 file first, and then transfer it to the Clie? (I'm actually having problems with this method.)

2) If I want to take an .AVI file and watch it on the Clie, PictureGear Lite won't "see" it for installation. What do I do?

Thanx!

Yep, convert your .wav into .mp3 and you'll be able to listen to your stuff.

As for video clips, you have to convert your .avi file to the gMovie format.

Did u manage to convert from .wav to .mp3 successfully, as i was also not able to do this to.
I could generate the mp3 file, and even transfer to the clie, but when i attempted to listen to it, it said something like 'memory stick - write media protected' and wouldnt play

Palm vs Windows

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/9/2002 11:05:42 AM #
Hi,

I am planning to buy a PDA but I couldn't figure out which type to buy. There is the palms and the windows PDAs. When I see windows ones, they come with 64mb ram, lots of software, mp3... But I think that Sony would be better but I can not figure out why I think like that :) It is becouse of my disliking windows maybe. What do you think about the differences of palms and windows pdas?

Thanks

Go to a store that has demos of both. Try them and decide for yourself.

Discontinued

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/10/2002 4:01:58 PM #
Hey guys,
So sorry to say that this model is discontinued. If you are planning to buy one, wait for the new MP3/PDA by Sony. They say it is a T615c with a MP3 player.

AWESOME PDA. I got mine for 220 bucks!!!

I just got mine from Ebay for 220 bucks. That's the best value I've ever seen. Go check it out. It's the best Palm PDA. I thought battery would die quick because of color screen but it's barely noticeable.

hi!

thanks for that post. i am about to purchase one, but i am worried about the battery. i can't find any info on battery useage and ed, though usually a thorough reviewer, didn't mention anything in his review.

can you tell me how long it lasts on a full charge (with and without the MP3 player) with the screen at whatever brightness is practical?

thanks so much!

I picked up a refurb from sonystyle.com for $250 and it's basically brand new (and comes with a 90-day warranty) : probably a lot safer than eBay!

For the *best* review (heh, if you like technical!) check out Peter Strobel's page at:

Battery life is excellent (for a Clie)
