maybe i am just being a lil forward in this but regular memory sticks should not be compared to SD cards. magic gate cards are the most comparaible to SD cards; as MMC is comparaible to MS.

i can understand one wanting to post the price difference. but the point still remains that SD cards are a better value if u are wanting to have copy-protected materials on the go.

just 2 cents. there aint enough mosny in what i said to start any type of flame war ;)

My original post is not really to compare the MS with SD. It's just to give PIC readers info on the current price of the MS since it was somehow mentioned in the article.

I also understand where you are coming from. But from the view of an ordinary consumer, MS/MMC is usually enough with regards to everyday PDA use compared to MG/SD. Copy-protected materials are not really that important nor being used by most. I think the total space becomes the selling point, as well as it's reusability (speed is not even an issue).

With regards to MG and MS (if you have a Clie 7xx), with the MS, you can't store ATRAC3 music format unlike the MG. Some say ATRAC3's compression is better than MP3, but then some just prefer MP3 since it's the more common format.

Regards.

Compaq has an iPAQ Personal Digital Audio Player that uses SD cards (approx $149). I have also seen a couple others (can't remember off hand).

What I think mb meant is devices that plug into the Palm/HandEra's SD/MMC slot and perform some useful function other than storing data, something akin to the Memory Stick digital camera that Sony announced a while back. Wasn't Palm's SD Bluetooth adapter promised by the end of the year?

Toshiba already ships one too

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/25/2001 10:15:55 AM #
I bought a Toshiba 128MB card for $179 last week from www.meritline.com.

* sigh * Sorry guys, this turned out to be an example of how difficult it is to remember everything that is handheld-related. I forgot about the Toshiba 128 MB card announcement from 3 months ago. I've edited the article to reflect it and the SanDisk one, too. Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow.

I still think it is newsworthy because the more companies that make them, the lower prices will be.

By the way, as the comment before this one said, Meritline is selling the Toshiba card for $180.
http://store.yahoo.com/meritline/tossucdigmem.html

That's the price for the SanDisk one as well:

You know something Ed ???

One thing that will be more and more important when you're gonna announce new SD cards is the speed at wich they can transfer data.

Because Panasonic said their next generation will be faster, we will also need the speed that we can reach with those cards. So maybe it won't be only an equation of price vs storage capacity when choosing a card, but also one implying speed.

Thanks

Transfer speed is an important factor but since PDA's have ceratin limits with regards the maximum transfer speed, it might not be a good comparison. Of course if you'll use it in another device which supports faster transfer speeds, by all means.

mmc please

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/25/2001 11:55:39 AM #
okay, we're seeing our bigger sd cards, but what about mmc? i could REALLY use some big mmc cards, but i cant use the sd in my mp3 player

You're MP3 player wouldn't happen to be the MiniJam Springboard module would it. I believe that takes MMC cards.
