Comments on: Quickies: Wireless Palm, T615C, Asthma, and More

Palm Inc. is continuing its campaign to create "buzz" about its forthcoming handheld by adding a page to its site that reveals that it will be a wireless model but nothing else about it. Earlier this week Palm emailed most of its customers with a teaser hint about a new handheld. -Ed

Sony now lists the silver version of the T615C as being available on or before January 22. The blue version still says simply "backordered". The T615C was officially announced earlier this week. -Ed

Palm

This whole secret product from palm is so stupid - I own an m505 - and culd not believe the bull that circled around its release - this new pre release thing is even worse.

Hello sony 615c - I think I have had enough of palm and its games.

I own a palm modem and keyboard - if the new device is not an improved version of the 505 then the whole shootin match is getting dumped and the only palm product I will ever use again is the os.

Get with it palm - I am a long tme user but this is just unacceptable.

They had better let thier customers know what they have to offer before they loose them all.

Jeez.

"They had better let thier customers know what they have to offer before they loose them all."

If this thing is a replacement for the m505, and they let their customers know this ahead of time, what do you think will happen to the sales of the m505?

They are just having a little marketing fun. Some people really like the anticipation of a new release. I think it is great that Palm is trying to communicate with its user base and create a little excitement.

I hope that the differences between the 705 and the Palm 7x are large enough to warrant most of those users to upgrade! That would be a huge benefit to Palm.

This is where I stop telling secrets because I could *really* get into trouble. Although Palm has made a few mistakes before, this new device-from what I've heard about it anyways-will change the way many people feel about Palm. Although I haven't really seen solid proof (nor have I seen the actual device), I've been told that there was an exact reason as to why the release was pushed back until now. It could be a change in a *major* feature of the device, it could also be a change in how the device looks (this probably wouldn't happen). It could also be so that other companies involved (namely cingular/sprint) were not ready for the devices release....We'll just have to wait a few more days to find out ;-)

Do I hear a hint for a Palm cell phone?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/17/2002 8:54:12 AM #
Ohh, please!

May it also have:

320x320 resolution
USB/Firewire
SD expansion
Soft graffiti
Speakerphone
Vibrate
Always on messaging
and, um, look better than the Treo...

It's time for me to ditch my V and cell phone. Palm, don't make me go PocketPC!

I hope all this excitement that Palm is building will not be a disappointment -- anything less than the Clie T615 will be a disappointment.

You know, I have to say that companies recent marketing behavior is making me angry. This inventor starts things out last year by building buzz for what turned out to be a...scooter. Apple then followed suit by claiming it was releasing a "revolutionary new product" that turned out to be an...MP3 player. Now Palm is taking a page from this brain-damaged playbook.

It has gotten to the point where marketing divisions need to be gelded and sales folk need to be shot. As a technically inclined person I tend to disdain both groups as clueless parasites. Most technicians and technical customer support people I hang out with feel the same way.

The buzz itself creates the disappointment. These companies are shooting themselves in the head. When will they learn the old, true adage: Under promise, over deliver.

Do yourselves a favor. Ignore the hype. Rise above it. Let's give his entire industry a new motto from its customers: SHOW ME THE PRODUCT!!!

i was going to mention apple too, and their inanely coy marketing ploys. who the heck wants to hear an announcement of an announcement of a new product?

one guy mentioned a drop in sales of m505 if palm announced an m505 replacement. do you think this teaser trailer, and all the expectations that are built up, is much better? apple had rumors of everything from 1.6ghz G5 processors to PDAs, leading to a lot of (unfairly) disappointed people a week or so ago.

i don't think these "leaks" hurt, as they're perpetrated by the company itself who is undoubtedly winding down production of earlier stuff or discounting it. Except for that palm m5 fiasco, apparently.

New model good, customer service bad

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/17/2002 9:02:11 AM #
So, if this is going to change how we feel about Palm, will they also address their customer service and QA?

Example:
I'm on my 5th m505 (2 of which came from "executive" support) and so far so good. Unfortunately the whole affair lasted 2 months and each replacement unit that came back to me was DOA.

New model bad, customer service good.
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/17/2002 12:10:57 PM #
Actually, if you are on your 5th m505, that means that they have repaced it four times. It sounds like customer service is good and the hardware is bad, right?

RE: New model good, customer service bad
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/17/2002 12:34:19 PM #
5th replacement unit meant 1 original unit and 5 replacements.

Sorry - I left off a good part of the story. Getting them to send the replacement units was VERY difficult. Keep in mind a 2 month time period with 5 units being shipped 2nd day air - the majority of the time in between was due to dealing with very difficult customer service reps. (many of which barely spoke English)

SONY HAS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE WHATOEVER
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/17/2002 1:49:28 PM #
however they make nice products - wish they never brake. After 2 months I just gave up on fixing my 300.
It takes about 3 hours to get through to the representative. And then they come up with reasons not to replace your device.
Both Palm and HandSpring have GREAT customer service - never had a problem with them.

Palm m505 is now $379 at Circuit City! Does this mean the m525 is right around the corner?

New Palm page isn't new

Scott @ 1/17/2002 11:16:38 AM #
Ed, that page isn't anything new. The page was linked to in the original email that Palm sent everyone. The email didn't mention wireless, but if you clicked on "Refer a Friend" (or whatever it was called), the page that came up referenced "wireless".

Internet Time
Ed @ 1/17/2002 11:30:02 AM #
Scott, you are definitely from the Internet generation. A quickie covering something that happened this week is already so out of date that it isn't newsworthy? Especially when its about a handheld that has still yet to be announced?

I've seen numerous comments from people here and on our forums making it clear that many, many people haven't seen this page because they aren't aware that the handheld Palm is going to announce is a wireless one. If enough people don't know something, it needs coverage.

Good point ED. When i posted my comment in the t615 release it was over shadowed by the t615 hype (see re:psst), and since not everybody does the insync online thing this is a good place to put the info.

Arrival of Sony T615C/S Clie

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/19/2002 5:27:34 PM #
As soon as I heard that they were taking pre-orders for the T615, I signed up at sony.com. I just received email that it's on its way. (Expected delivery 01/21) Yahoo! I loved the 760 paperwhite screen and high resolution, but disliked the form-factor. Let's hope I can get used to the T615 button-style. Luckily, I'm not a big gamer.

T615C and Targus keyboard

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/15/2002 1:16:44 PM #
I emailed the folks at Targus regarding the availability of a keyboard for the Clie T-series, and this is the reply I got:

"Unfortunately we do not currently have a keyboard for the T615. I have checked with our Marketing and Development Team and there are no plans as of right now to produce the keyboard. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please feel free to contact me back in the future in hopes that we are keeping up the demand for new products each and every day."

Okay, folks... let them know we want that darn keyboard, or an adapter that will work to convert the existing Clie keyboard to work with the T-series.
