Comments on: Rumor: m515, m130, and T625C Appear at Webstores (Updated)

One of the signs a new product is about to be announced is it begins to appear on webstores whose employees don't realize that it is supposed to still be a secret. This has happened with numerous handhelds in the past and is still happening now.

The Palm m515 is listed on CompuSmart, a Canadian webstore. Details are very sketchy but it does say the handheld will have 16 MB of RAM. It's listed at $650 CAD, or about $400 US.

m515 in stores.....

Davy @ 2/20/2002 8:58:39 AM #
I got this e-mail in the m505 group yesterday.

So I sent this:

> this could be for real, but I've heard way to many of these. Perhaps
> if you could come back and give a little more info, but for now,

And Finally I just got this:

Dave this is real i work in a mayor Whoseller

Well, that last thing really didn't help my confidence level, but at least he followed up, when most people drop stupid rumors and run.

Actually, the m515 has been listed on Ingram Micro's website (a major Canadian wholesaler) for almost a month. I never saw the m130 though.

Every time I told people that on websites, everyone flamed me. I had the SKU, MFR Part. No, Price, availability date, etc... Didn't stop everyone from flaming though. I guess if they don't have access to certain information, it can't be true.

Paranoia isn't always good.

RE: m515 in stores.....

I know that. It's just that getting this poorly spelled, two-sentence announcement didn't really convince me. I don't know if you want to reveal all your information here, but it'd be intresting to see, at least.

On Compusmart it says In Stock.

I've seen it on InMac Canada as well.

Davy, I've been talking to this same person, too. He just sent me a message that says:
The Release date is also for the M130

The retail price in us will be:

M515 $399
M130 $279

Please keep in mind, there are a lot of people who read this site for whom English isn't their first language. Sometimes it's their third or fourth. So you can't read too much into grammar and spelling; take the info itself for what its worth. I think this guy is right on, mostly because I've heard the same things from other sources.

Well, I just went over to Compusmart and did a search on M515 and didn't find anything. Got a Link?

m130 price

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:03:24 AM #
The site actually has the m130 listed at $449 Canadian, which means $283 USD. This is still a little more than I was hoping, but sub-$300 is still a nice deal for an expandable color handheld.

The other odd thing is that they have the m130 listed as "in-stock". Has Palm even officially announced this thing yet?

RE: m130 price
Ed @ 2/20/2002 9:26:31 AM #
I swear when I was writing that last night it was $500 CAD. Well, the m130 isn't out yet so there's no reason why CompuSmart can't change the price.

It also lists the m515 as being in stock and it isn't available yet, either. Anyone want to order one and see what they tell you?

Help!!! Should I return my m505?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:25:23 AM #
I purchased a m505 less than 30 days ago from Palm. It comes with a 30 day unconditional return policy. Should I return the m505 and go cold turkey for a week to get a m515?

Suggestions?

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:29:13 AM #
I really, really would. The m515 will have double the memory and a much, much brighter screen. It also will have less potential USB problems and OS 4.1 vs. OS 4.01 so I would go for it.

Yes, as long as you remember these are rumors. You could have to wait longer than a week to get a m515. Can you live a month without one, if the worst case happens?

GO!
The worse can happen is you will have to wait a bit if it takes times to arrive in the u.s, but maybe not.

I really don't understand why Palm didn't lower the price for their M5xx handhelds. It help to kill Apple market. Paying a certain amount to see a major price drop or a new model at the same price only weeks after your purchase doesn't make customers happy.

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 1:15:41 PM #
Do you feel you need the brighter screen and the 16mb that badly?

I would say...

Hell Yeah! It's a risk alright but then again :
Palm DID announce in the past they will come out with a brighther version of the m505 right? Well I think now is the time. It would be such a great advantage to do so, and the wait is WELL worth it. I say go for it.

What is the worst that can happen? A small wait? Don't worry and go right ahead.

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 3:50:13 PM #
Return the m505 in the 30 day period and avoid keeping that dog of a machine. If you can't wait, go buy another one and start a new 30 day return period. The last thing you're going to want is to end up with an m505 with burned out USB (it'll probably happen to you at some point) and a dim screen.

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 4:50:09 PM #
Think about it, you will spend just a few bucks in shipping. An 8 meg card will cost much more and you won't get the improoved screen.

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 5:00:23 PM #
Return it, but don't get the M515.

I'm stuck with a 505 that won't hot sync and a serial cradle that's been on pre-order forever. No sync makes it useless for me.

I'd be afraid the M515 has the same problem and would not want to bet $400 that it doesnt.

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 5:05:55 PM #
i'd return, and buy it at a store again. then return it within 30 days. do this until the 515 comes out (if it does). then, when the 515 is released, return the 505 for a 515. :)

RE: Help!!! Should I return my m505?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 6:19:02 PM #
Buy a Clie 615c. The brighter screen on the M515 is going to be horrible to look at without a hi-res screen. Grainy as hell I'm sure.

Call Palm about the inability to hotsync with USB. They are replacing the m505 and the cradle for this "known issue" about inability to hotsync by USB. The tech said it occurs abruptly in pre-October 2001 m505's.

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 9:36:01 PM #
Hi,
I am on my third "enhanced M505" unit. I don't know what the deal is but after charging it up I noticed that the screen is about 40% dimmer than the unit I am replacing. With the backup light on, rather than white and bright, it's more of a gray/very light purple and rather dim looking. On hold for customer care for about 1/2 hour now "all customer care representatives are assisting other customers." I'm recommending that he to return the 505, skip the 515, and stay away from Palm altogether.

Available?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:30:47 AM #
Compusmart is listing the M515 - English as in stock, and the French verison available in 12 days. Can anyone confirm this?

RE: Available?
Ed @ 2/20/2002 9:33:56 AM #
That's what the site says but I'm fairly certain that if you ordered one, they'd tell you it isn't available. Still, anyone from Canada want to try? Some places were selling the i705 early. But not almost two weeks early.

Comments: If I put an order in for the new Palm m515, will it be shipped
immediately, or will I have to wait 2 weeks. Also, do you have a retail
store located in montreal and do you sell the m515 there.

Thanks

I then went to the compusmart store, and they said that the M515 and m130 were in stock but would only be available on March 4....The guy said that he was not sure if I could order it online and receive it quicker, but the email says that I can order it right now...I don't think it is a computer generated email since it has some grammer mistakes in it....I don't know..

Palm m515 vs Sony T615

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:39:25 AM #
So, who thinks the m515 stands up against the same-priced T615? It would seem to me that the high res screen gives the edge to the Sony. Retail presence probably gives the edge to m515, I'm sure. However, for those who shop around, I'm not sure I could recommend the Palm.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:41:34 AM #
The one consideration for those looking to upgrade for a brighter screen and more memory, maybe (in my case anyway), is the fact that I ahve all the accessories for the 505.

I would have a hard time selling the 505 and all the accessories to someone, as typically most people only want the handheld. So I would like the sony, however, I don't want to be stuck holding a modem, keyboard, and travel charger that I can't use. Unfortunate!

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:45:37 AM #
If peripherals are important to you, the m515 is the only choice. Right out of the box there are half a dozen keyboards, tons of hard and soft cases, replacement styli, pen/stylus combos, and more. There are a few of these for the T615 but not nearly as many. IMO, that gives the m515 a big edge. I want a high resolution screen but I have to have a keyboard.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
Davy @ 2/20/2002 10:23:55 AM #
If the m505 could get a brighter screen, with no USB problems that have been reported, it'd probably be well worth the money, because then it'd be much more of a question of personal choice. After all the high-res screen is very cool for many applications, but would you want digital cameras, wireless modems, and everything else that has been released for it.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 10:25:02 AM #
I've decided to "Just say NO" to peripherals. I figure I could easily afford to upgrade to a new handheld once a year for the cost of the peripherals. Most of the were just toys anyway.

Also, I don't believe there will ever be a truly universal slot/port that will last more than a couple of years. These things just change shapes way too often.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 10:44:14 AM #

We need a universal connector across all manufacturers of PalmOS devices. Just think of what a headache it would be if you needed a different keyboard or mouse for a Dell than for a Compaq or Gateway. The problem now is that the accessories are not commoditiy items like keyboards.

T615 -- Four Words: Button and Stylus Suck.

I would NEVER use this PDA even if it was $100 -- the buttons are lousy, hard to use, and the stylus is too small even for my four year old.

Okay, think I'm on crack? What are the two main ways you "interact" with a Palm device?

Press the buttons and use a sylus.

Thankfully, the m515 has great buttons and a good stylus. I can live without high res for a while.

Yes the T615 buttons suck ... if you want to play games. I think they are fine.

The stylus takes a little getting used to, however, now the Palm ones feel fat and bulky.

The screen (one of the rather important ways that you interact with your PDA) is great though, with great contrast. I love the black-on white look and great fonts when reading e-books. It's a lot easier on the eyes.

The T615 was a big improvement over my m505.

Kevin boy:

You are on crack.

Stylus: if you don't like it get a replacement or use a pen/stylus

Buttons: Do you have mitts for hands? If so, pardon me, but the other 99.9% of the population doesn't have problems.

With the exception of gaming, the buttons are fine.

That guy is a TROLL.

Anyone who has spent 5 minutes using a jog wheel will NEVER go back.

For *MOST* people (and not myself, and the other Uber-PDA enthusiasts on this board) the ability to pull up a phone number with one hand (jog dial) outweighs not being able to effectively play Frogger.

Until you actually USE a Clie, shut your yapper.

And as for the stylus.....please.....half the cool of having a Palm is going out and buying a big, fat, comfortable stylus.

And while we're discussing the act of TEXT ENTRY:
Listen...."Kev".....the Graffiti area on the 615C is hard as a rock, and 35 times faster to write on than the m505.

I'd take a 615c with Fitaly Stamp and a Doctor Grip Stylus over my old m505 and Graffiti ANY DAY.

> the other 99.9% of the population doesn't have problems.

Don't assign your opinion to everyone else. While you don't have a problem with the T series' tiny stylus, I've read dozens of complaints about it. Way more than .01% of the popular thinks it's bad. I don't remember ever hearing from anyone who actually likes it. Opinions usually break down into "It really stinks" and "I don't like it but I can live with it".

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 3:50:17 PM #
Just got my Blue T615C as an upgrade to my aging Visor Prism. Here are my views:

The buttons do suck for "no eyes" use (gaming, in the dark usage, etc), but are fine when you can actually see them. Their problems lies in the fact that they all feel the same (you can't distinguish where one ends and the other begins). The Up/Down rocker is the real bane here, though. It's too small and too stiff to really use.

But hey, that's what the Jog Wheel is there for.

The stylus right now is adequate, but I'll get used to it and eventually like it, I'm sure. Why? Because I originally thought that a standard Palm sized stylus was too small for me. I got used to them.

My only real complaint about the stylus is that I can't easily remove it from the silo without a concerted effort. With my Visor, all it took was a simple one-handed thumb motion to remove the thing. With my CLIE, I've actually gotta USE my fingernails to pry the thing out.

Although I'm sure this will be rectified with 3rd party stylus solutions. With my Prism I had a Pilot Pentopia Chameleon Pen/Stylus. I absolutely adore that thing and I hope they make one for the T Series CLIEs.

> Don't assign your opinion to everyone else.

My aren't you a touchy one--did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?!? But pardon my intrusion, but aren't you doing the same bs that you're blaming the other poster for?

Personally, I own both a Clie and a Palm Vx and have no problem with either buttons. The people that complain are the wannabe-gameboy players. IMHO, if you want to play games, get a gameboy advance. It has sounds and colors and a real joypad that beats the heck out of the bleeps and blurts that most PalmOS devices emit.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 8:23:14 PM #
I used to own a Palm Vx until I cracked the screen and was mulling over which to buy as replacement - unlike just 2 years ago when the choice was quite simple, the Palm V was the only one that had everything you could ask for in a PDA.

In the end, the Sony T615 won me over. Yeah, sure it isn't perfect. Neither was the Palm V 2 years ago but we didn't have a choice then. Now that we have, the issue is which one. Just like buying a computer - buy what you need for now. It will get outdated almost immediately after buying whichever model.

In my opinion, you look at what you need your PDA to do. If you like games - go buy the Palm m515 - and even for games if you play Solitaire or "tap-tap type" of games you really don't need the buttons to do much.

If you read alot or use it for more information type of activity, the T615 with its jog dial is really useful. The screen is fantastic and the reviews about the red tones looking brownish IMHO isn't really an issue. I can still differentiate the reds from browns. Unless you are using the Clie to touch-up your photos or print output quality images, it isn't an issue either. Who does anyway? It isn't meant to do that. You have a PC sitting on your desk to do that.

As for peripherals, unless you absolutely use the Palm to replace your notebook/PC the Foldaway keyboards and its variants aren't that important. I bought mine and thought I could use it but unless you are typing short memos, you will want to go back to your notebook after a while. Yeah, it's cool so if that's what you want...

What else? SD vs MS? Well, Memory Sticks are now 40% cheaper. But the clincher for me? Damn, if Palm came out with the m515 instead of the m505 a year ago I would have bought it. But they didn't and it tells me they are short-changing their customers. It's like they took a year to address the basic problems with the m505 - bad screen. And still they cannot do better than what Sony is offering.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
Scott @ 2/20/2002 11:37:28 PM #
I'm anal about usability issues. I'll throw in my opinion that the buttons suck. That should adjust that 99.9% figure, somewhat. And, no, I don't play games. Now, do lousy buttons make or break a purchasing decision for me? Not if it's the only problem.

So, what are some advantages of the m5xx?
* Many more peripherals
* It's made by Palm. That implies several things, including better support, more common access to OS upgrades (a possible non-issue with OS5 on the horizon).

In the end, you have to weigh your specific needs. If I was choosing between the two to satisfy the geek in me, I'd probably buy a T615C. If I was buying a slew of them for my business, I'd probably buy m515's.

Finally, regarding the unimportance of the lousy up/down button. On my Samsung i300, I have a side up/down rocker (think of it like a scroll wheel), as well as the up/down button on the front of the device. The one on the side moves item by item while the one on the front pages up/down. Doesn't the Sony operate the same way? If so, you'd still have a need to use the front up/down button.

RE: Palm m515 vs Sony T615
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 8:26:34 AM #
So, the can of worms opens with the simple phrase, "Palm m515 vs Sony T615..."

Anyone notice an odd similarity in the model names?

Anyway, this discussion is generally childish (which, as a N610 owner, I find embarassing, since it's mainly caused by other Sony owners), but I want to throw 2 RATIONAL cents into the mix.

First, let's be honest and admit that Sony's buttons haven't been very good since they started making better PDAs. The S300 had good buttons but was a lousy machine. The N-series and T-series are better machines, but with increasingly lame buttons. Is this a problem? Only to the end user. I personally prefer the buttons on the m505, but I've learned to live with those on the N610. And my hands are generally considered small, BTW...

Second, let's be honest and admit that Palm's screens have been subpar when compared with the competition. Lower res, dimmer, etc. Is this a problem? Again, ONLY TO THE END USER. I don't mind the m505 screen, but I prefer the Clie. I can also see, however, why someone would prefer the Palm.

Third, let's admit that SD "appears" more proprietary right now than MS. Here's what I mean: "open standard" generally results in "plentiful and cheap," while "proprietary" usually translates to "very exclusive and high-priced." I think it's fair to say that so far, MS is more plentiful and cheaper than SD.

Lastly, let's admit that "brand name loyalty" is not a bad thing - it's what most manufacturers seek - Chevy, Ford, Olds, etc., in cars; Palm, Sony, Handspring, etc., in PDAs. You Sony owners who constantly bitch that NO ONE can disagree with you about which PDA is better are to be pitied - you often remind me of the proverbial "terrible" 2-year-old, stomping your feet and throwing yourself on the floor, crying, until you get your way. Or worse yet, you're the proverbial redneck pickup truck driver with the window sticker of Calvin peeing on your hated competitor's logo, all the while drinking your beer illegally on the way to causing yet another alcohol-related fatality. You give a bad name to us more reasonable Sony owners as you constantly attack people who use machines with A COMPATIBLE OS. It won't be long before you attack me because I keep my N610C, since I see no really compelling reason to drop another $400 on a machine that will have minor improvements while rendering my Stowaway keyboard obsolete (at least for now).

IT'S A PDA, PEOPLE. If you have some innate need to argue that passionately about something, find something else. I find it hard to believe someone can have that much "passion" for a freaking gadget (and yes, for those of you who know who he is, I'm also slightly referencing Dale Coffing, that PPC nut who REALLY needs a life).

Scott, you can download JogPage (free) from PalmGear.com and you will have the screen scroll per page with the Jog Dial.

And for those sitting on the fences - well, isn't this the great American dream is all about? The freedom to choose, the freedom to say what you want to say and the freedom to s**t on something or somebody that you don't like - no matter how incredulous and sometimes even childish? Good for those that expressed either they love/hate Palm/Sony because that's the game you guys invented.

Sony typically used different number codes for the same units in different markets. I would be careful about the 425 and the 625. These very well may be the 415 and 615 with different part number for different markets, but have the same exact internals and functions.

I just read an article somewhere last night. It said Palm had showed its bluetooth SD-card in some kind of show (probably the one in Europe). Palm said it will be available on March 4. But other than that article, I cannot find any articles or even from Palm's website. Could anyone confirm this? I have been waiting eargerly for that.

By the way, the article says it will be around $129 US. It will be available at first in English-spoken countries. The non-English ones will be in April.

You can check http://radio-shack.ca/
They have both models listed (unavailable I think).
I live in Québec and, yes, the M125 arrived very quickly at this store.
The M130 look like a bit the M125 when it launch: too expansive; but the M515 look to have a better price/peformace ratio.

M515

gaardii @ 2/20/2002 12:35:53 PM #
I've just checked the CompuSmart link and it looks like the M515 entry has been pulled. I guess Palm's spies are reading PIC to spot the leaks.

It'll be a pity if the M515's screen res is only half that of the T625. I've been a loyal Palm-man, but I'm tempted to go for the Sony T625 (not T615 - I'm in Scotland) because it seems to have everything the M515 has and more. Well, maybe Sony support isn't as good as Palm's. Lets hope that Palm surprise us with a 320x320 screen. Hey, if we're hoping, lets hope for a hi-res screen with virtual graffiti area. Mmmm, nice...

The clie t615c is a beautiful machine... but it has one near fatal flaw... battery life. In my recent battery tests at http://www.pocket-gizmos.com the 615c went nearly 6 hours at low backlight, and nearly THREE hours at high backlight... this is about half what the clie 'N' series do, and more in the realm of what is expected from Pocket PC's instead of palms.

I was planning to make the leap until i found out about its lackluster battery life...

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 8:29:35 PM #
Note that a 160x160 screen as ONE-QUARTER as many pixels as a 320x320 screen, not one-half.

That's half as many on the horizontal, and half as many on the vertical.

So yes, it's time for Palm to get moving on high-res screens across the board...

RE: M515
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:34:52 PM #
No one said anything about it having half the PIXELS. He said that the Palm had half the RESOLUTION of the Sony - and he's absolutely right. Four times the pixels = twice the resolution.

Hey Gordon ! I'm from Stirling, Scotland and I just ordered my new Sony T-625 from Dabs.com, they will have them in stock Friday (23rd). I was going to wait for the Palm m515 to replace my Vx but I can't hack the crap low res screen after seeing the Sony N770's high res, if the T625 is as good as the N770 it'll be one cracker of a Palm.

Cheers

RE: M515
gaardii @ 2/21/2002 10:04:36 AM #
Um, can I ask if anyone knows for certain that the screen res on the M515 will be 160 x 160? Because I haven't heard it. And why do you think Palm would have to wait until OS5 before it releases a 320 x 320 hi res screen? If Sony can manage it by tweaking OS4.x then Palm sure as heck can too! Especially in its new flagship model. And by the way, although I think its possible the M515 will be hi-res I don't seriously expect a virtual graffiti area. That's something to hope for from OS5.

I Can't wait for the M515!!

CrustyTheClown @ 2/20/2002 2:11:00 PM #
I've been holding out on buying an M505 ever since I read about the M515. I think it'll be great. It pretty much solves the M505's most talked about flaws. The dim screen and the lack of internal memory.

And as far as the Sony T615 goes, I went two times to my local Best Buy and tried it for quite a while, to the point where the sales clerk was starting to give me dirty looks. Needless to say I found myself in the same boat as another comment above. Those damn buttons and the stylus are just too finicky. And I DON'T have big hands, they're medium at best.

So before all you Sony-People start bashing me over the head and calling me a troll, I say piss-off.

There's nothing wrong with trying something and not liking it. It seems from the reactions to an earlier comment that you Sony people can't take an ounce of criticism. Not everyone has to have Hi-res and so the ergonomics play a big part in making PDA buying decisions.

I got off my main point. Anyway, the M515 sounds great and I'll be first in line to buy one.

I've been looking for my first handheld and I've also been waiting for the m515 to come out.

I like the T615c but my PC at work (which is where I would use it the most) runs windows NT which means I wouldn't be able to sync it up (t615c is USB only) there.

I'm assuming that the m515 will at least have the option of a serial cradle like the m505. From what I've been told, the t615c doesn't.

So did you, indeed, jump up and down stomping your feet while you wrote this? Throw yourself on the floor afterward?

I own a Clie N610C. I won't purchase the T615C because it's simply not significant enough of an upgrade. Here's what I believe genuinely IS better on the m5xx than on the new Clie:
1) For some apps, text is easier to read on the Palm. High-res is nice, but it's not always perfect in a 3-inch square.
2) The application buttons ARE superior on the Palm. You may not consider that to be a huge issue (I don't), but just shut up and admit that they are.
3) If the m515 offers the same software as the i705, then Palm might have a superior software package bundled with its model - i.e., Palm will offer Docs-to-Go Professional 4; Sony only offers DTG Standard. It's ironic that the lower-res model would include the Powerpoint software, but oh, well.
4) Available accessories/peripherals for Palm are superior, more plentiful, and less expensive.
5) Although I like the form factor of the Clie N and T series, I still think the Palm looks more elegant.
6) Palm tech support, though inconsistent of late, is still superior to Sony.

Although I like the Sony, I'm not about to cry like a baby telling people who purchase Palm-branded merchandise that they're idiots or retards. I don't need everyone to buy what I buy or even merely agree with me to feel better about myself; you shouldn't either. It would be appreciated if you could GROW UP and take a rational point-of-view.

But will it Hot Sync on a USB connection?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 4:17:56 PM #
I'm on my third M505 thanks to the USB Hot Sync debacle... and each time between new "enhanced" versions it's 4 weeks or more of waiting and no one knowing when the replacement will ship.
Added insult is that Palm will NOT offer $$$ off for any of us wishing to upgrade.
But come to think of it, I'd likely steer away from the M515 just in case it carries the same USB hot sync design flaw as the M505.

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 5:33:51 PM #
What is this USB design flaw that you mention?
I have a Palm M500 and I don't see any USB design flaw.

RE: But will it Hot Sync on a USB connection?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 10:37:19 PM #
The M505 units can stop hot syncing on a USB connection. It's a "known issue" to Palm and you have to call to get a replacement unit. But my replacement unit also stopped hotsyncing. My new replacment unit's screen is screwed up - the backlight or something doesn't work right and it's very dim. I've got to start all over. It just doesnt' seem right to pay $400 and have to go through all this...

Palm m515 Screen

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 9:44:54 PM #
Is the new screen on the m515 going to be brighter when the backlight is turned off? I currently have an m505 and have the backlight on 95% of the time. I am interested in extending my battery life and hoping to not have to use the backlight all the time.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

RE: Palm m515 Screen
Ed @ 2/20/2002 10:16:41 PM #
As far as I know, the brighter screen on the m515 is related to the sidelights, not the screen itself. So there should be no difference with the sidelights off.

Maybe you can help with this. I received an enhanced Palm M505, but the screen is much dimmer than my original, and looks cloudy.
My original (seems to) have a long side light on the left and a short one on the right. The new unit has a long side light on the left but none on the right. Does this make any sense? Do you know what the situation is with this?

I love the fact that OS 4.1 is the most secure Palm OS ever. But if you have an M505 (like me) you have Palm OS 4.0 and cannot get OS 4.1 since they won'te support it. So I guess I have a less than secure unit. Doesn't matter since I will have to move to Sony or some other mfg. since Palm is dropping its support to the lovely pay by the call and email that doesn' work.

OK, I actually work for Palm Sales, and we don't have any more info than is here on this site. In fact, half the people at work don't even know about PalmInfocenter.
We aren't allowed to comment on any of this, and if you ask 95% of the people in our sales department, they won't even know what the heck you're all talking about.
I've already gotten 2 calls today, one about that Bluetooth card, and the other about the m515.
If y'all could cool it, it'd be nice, because it's really dissappointing (to me at least) to get a customer calling us about something we don't even know exists!
So yeah.

I guess this is your friendly Palm Sales Rep, asking you all a big favor. Because you know, even if you get someone besides me on the phone, they're going to ask *me* your questions. And I'm getting a little annoyed at not knowing the answers.

And yes, I'm posting anonymously, because my supervisors all read these articles.

Palm using FUD on its own employees?

It is you who should be angry. You're the one who cannot do his job properly because of a lack of information. Information that retail stores have in abundance. See one of the earlier posts.

It is you who should have that supervisor's balls for breakfast. You are getting phonecalls from potential customers about products that are already sitting in warehouses, waiting to be delivered to the general public.

Sorry, had to say that.
Could you post some secret info on availability in Europe? hehe

Don't be absurd.

Palm's management has no control over what rumours appear here and other websites. If they started to confirm or deny rumours, they would be asking for trouble. If Palm didn't do everything they could to keep new products secret until the official launch, then some people here would want to crucify them for this as well (remember the abuse a year ago relating to the m505 announcement?). It seems that, for some people, Palm is always wrong no matter what they do.

Also, get off the Palm Sales Rep's back, the guy is just trying to do his job and so is his supervisor (who may want to keep his balls).

Come to think of it, your unhealty fascination with the supervisor's anatomy suggests that you might find greater fulfillment at other websites.

Yeah, OK...

"I'm a member of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. I just wanted to plea with you all to be nicer to solid American businesses like Palm. In this time of war and recession, we need these businesses to be successful without too much criticism. I can't tell you who I am because President Bush likes to waste hours at a time reading posts on PalmInfocenter."

How do we know this person is a Palm Sales Rep?

OK, take it one further...I AM the President of the United States. Just call me "W." Good to talk to ya'll.

SHEESH!!!

I sympathize with your situation, but it's no excuse for your company. I've worked "Customer Care Escalation" at a former company and understand you can only be a good as your corporation allows.
But it's Palm's responsibility to customers lead with the dissemination of information - to be better informed than their customers and to use that information to provide the best sales consultation and customer care.
I don't mean to sound flip, but I recommend that you buy a copy of "Raving Fans" by Ken Blanchard and leave it on your Supervisor's Desk. Insist that it's his responsibility to create such a culture at Palm Sales. Same needs to be done at Palm Customer Care and Tech Support as well.

RE: Just a plea...
rigter @ 2/22/2002 7:38:10 AM #
OK, I am not interested at all in his supervisor's balls. Or any other part of his anatomy for that matter.

BUT if your job is to answer people on behalf of your company, then at least you should have answers to some pretty obvious questions.

By that I do not mean the full specs and delivery dates of a new model that is coming up. By that I mean information that can be released to the public on behalf of the company. History has taught Palm that these questions will come. Be prepared and brief your sales reps. Tell them what information can be shared. Do not make the mistake again. Make sure you know what to tell the public with a new model around the corner.

The post itself is suspicious at best.
The poster claims that all these questions are directed to him. It should be an easy job for anyone at Palm to find out if this is true, and who this person is. He might as well post under his own name.

So, I think the post is a hoax.
That doesn't change the my first answer though.

Cheers,
Jan

Hey, i just don't want my ass in the fire if anybody finds out I'm even confirming the possible existence of these handhelds.

I do what I'm told. If you really want to talk to me just kittiekatt@hotmail.com">email me for heaven's sakes.
and I'm a girl, not a guy.

and I am more than a little pissed off at the way things are run. I'd love to be able to give all the answers, but if I do, I lose my job. I'm not even allowed to confirm or deny *any* info about *any* new product.(Standard response - Palm does not comment on unreleased products. keep an eye on the web and our InSync Online emails.)

and if you think I'm a hoax, well, I haven't got much to say about that, since I am getting paid right now to sit here on the phone and take orders for Palm.

RE: Just a plea...
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/23/2002 6:22:58 PM #
by the way...

i'm not even trying to make excuses for Palm.
I think it's dumb to leak info and not even allow us to confirm that there may be handhelds released in the future.

i just wanted to essentially let everyone know that we can't say anything here in sales, until *after* the item has come out.
and to hope that maybe that would deter people calling and getting one of my less-informed colleagues on the phone, because they come and annoy me at work about stuff I wish I could confirm.

m515 vs. m505

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 7:10:31 AM #
So it looks like the m515 is the m505 with:

1. 16MB
2. Brighter Sidelights
3. OS 4.1

Anybody add anything else? I wonder if battery life will suffer much due to #1 and #2?

RE: m515 vs. m505
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/23/2002 9:54:52 AM #
From the Palmsource reports, battery life will be affected by the sidelight, dependent on the brightness. But presumably people will play with it and get a user-configurable compromise between brightness and battery life, and the lack of user-configurability with the m505 seems to what users really hated. Battery life shouldn't be significantly affected by the extra RAM, somewhere in the sub-10% region I'd guess.

why no HI-RES Screen?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 7:15:58 AM #
Why do you think that Palm apparently didn't include HI-RES Screen in the m515? Was it too expensive for Palm? Does Sony own the technology and refused to license it?? Could they not fit it in the m5xx form factor? WHY????????

RE: why no HI-RES Screen?
rigter @ 2/22/2002 8:01:52 AM #
A high res screen requires pixel doubling or other technical solutions to get the resolution that is not native in the current OS. Palm will offer more resolutions natively in the next version of the OS.

HandEra designed a way around this. Sony too.
But I don't think the two are compatible. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Many of the desirable features were not developed by Palm and that includes screen improvements like the gorgeous screens by HandEra and Sony. USB is another example of something that was developed by a licensee.

Palm is currently working on a new OS, in combination with a move to a new hardware platform. Palm decided to move to the new hardware platform first, and beef up the OS after that. Makes sense to me.
This means that the new OS5 will very much look like the current version. And no significant changes will be made until the move to the new hardware has been completed, unless the future of the company would be at stake. Words like this have been spoken by Palm officials.

Given that most palm 505 critics complain about the brightness, and no so much about resolution, the conclusion for Palm is obvious: fix the sidelights and leave the resolution alone. That is for OS5 and up.
Also, throwing in 16mb of memory is something that could be done easily without compromising current development for OS5 and beyond. So there it is.
Some poster copied a full description of an ad at a webstore. Read it, and you will find that the 515 addresses some complaints about the 505, but nothing new. Not even bluetooth, apparently.
Imo, the 515 is what the 505 should have been.

Over here, in Europe, this means that this Palm model will quickly become the superior Palm OS pda. Sony models are hard to find and therefore won't compete.
Same goes for HandEra. Handspring is the only serious competition here. Go figure. The Visor Pro competing with the 515. Lost race for Handspring I suppose.
Unless of course Handspring is able to pull a rabbit out of some hat with a color high end model.
A color Edge with SD and maybe bluetooth would surely attract some attention. But I don't see that happen...

Cheers,
Jan

Got My M515

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 10:08:12 AM #
HEY!
I GOT MY PALM M515 YESTERDAY AT OFFICE DEPOT. DON'T REALLY KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT IT, DUE TO THE FACT YOU HAVE TO CHARGE IT UP BEFORE USE. LOOKS ARE BASICALLY THE SAME AS THE M505. ALL METAL, WITH THE SD SLOT AND THE BUTTONS ARE THE SAME. I DID CHECK OUT THE SCREEN AND IT LOOKS TO ME JUST ALITTLE BRIGHTER THEN THE M505. LOOKING AT OTHER MODELS IT DOESN'T COMPARE

No kidding?! Well, please give us a nice short review on it. Is the contrast configurable? Which Office Depot? What city and state?

scouter075 @ 2/21/2002 11:29:48 AM #
Sorry, But I don't believe you. If it needed charging and you got it yesterday, why didn't you charge it overnight?

We went through this last year with all of the TROLLS who kept claiming they got M505's early.

If you got one:

Give us the location of the Office Depot
Post a picture

m130: buy or wait

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/22/2002 4:15:31 PM #
A former die-hard m125 fan here. As you can guess, I cancelled my order after I fell in love with the m130. I can't wait to get it in my hands. But one question:

Is a price drop expected with the m130? I mean, will it drop $50 after a week it's relased?

Didn't sound logical to me though, (The lowest they can go is 249$ and it's not so cheaper than 279$) but I'd like to hear your comments.

kittie @ 2/23/2002 10:27:31 AM #
price probably won't drop for at least 6 months...
seems to be the running pattern.

if I hadn't bought myself an m125 in December, i'd be getting in line for the m130 - I love the look of it.

Now if only we could get one wireless.

**sigh**

CNET: Palm prepares pair of color handhelds

Ed @ 2/24/2002 9:48:42 AM #
This Cnet article can't be taken as proof as it is mostly based on the PIC article that you just read. We're the "handheld enthusiast sites" reffered to in the Cnet article. Though I did talk to Richard Shim about it and, while he admitted this article, was the source of much of their info, they have some independent sources, too.

Ed - CNET should put you on their payroll. This isn't the first time they've used your work.
