m100 $36?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 10:41:11 AM #
I can't believe that we can have a new Palm OS PDA for only $36! Even the Vx only sells for $95! Hey, can anyone in Japan ship abroad?

If you can read Japanese Kanji on Palm, then try buy via www.japan-direct.com, but worry not for it is an English site.

Japanese ROM has disadvantage, too. It has to be synced with Japanese Windows with Japanese version of PalmOS. It may be a hassle(?) if you're using other versions of Windows other than that.

(But I like the 8MB ROM it has :) )

how about flashing the Vx to the englisg version?
maybe someone should try with 0S4.1

Back to Palm

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 11:51:38 AM #
Palm's new M130 got me thinking about deserting Sony and returning to the Palm fold. At $266 it's "sayonara Sony!". I want a color pda that looks best inside and won't cause me too much anguish if I drop it on the factory floor. I'm comin' back home Palm!

Here is something interesting

Memory Upgrade

skytraveler @ 3/4/2002 7:08:34 PM #
Has anyone done the memory upgrade with STNE? I was just wondering if anyone has any experiences good or bad they can share. I feel a little strange sending my palm to someone I don't know. Also, is the price worth it?

Compare Palm's m515 to Sony's T615...

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 10:43:11 PM #
If you really add it up, why would anyone buy the Palm m515 when for the same price you can get the Sony T615 it has all the exact same features Plus HI-REZ!!! And a way better and louder speaker, faster reset boot time, better screen backlight, and jog dial. Plus you can add a MP3 player for only $130.

Am I crazy, or do I have a point?

the 615 is obviously superior and a winner if we compare feature by feature, but the problem is the lack of accessories....

You're right, the Sony is a better handheld. The only disadvantage is the lack of accessories, but for a lot of people that won't matter. I personally don't need a keyboard for my Palm, as an example. Hi-Res and Jog-Dial are fab, and as the battery life is comparable in both M515 and T615, the latter takes the prize for overall best-ness.

Japanese Palm devices should work fine with English Windows unless you won't use Japanese characters :-)

Most English palmwares work fine with Japanese PalmOS devices. (as I do.)

Major disadvantege is that menus and dialogs are Japanese (But you can reflash English OS?) and silk screen area.

Major advantege is that they have double-size flash ROM. (Of course except m100 & m105.)

m515 FAQ?

It's now the m515 FAQ? Then why does it still reference the m505. Perhaps you should actually update its data, not just the title.

Off topic: LEather flipcover for m505?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 11:09:34 AM #
I know its off the topic and i have posted this msg on other topics. few replied, so here it is again.

Ive been researching about m505s durability compared to the Vx's because i dont wanna use any hardcase or softcase for it anymore. i want to start using the leather flip cover for it. But is the screen fragile like the VX? which means a few feet will smash it? i havent seen any m505s in palmgraveyard.

I want to know to who is using the flipcover and for how long have you been using it?

You got about a half dozen responces the last time you posted this. Here's what people said before:

>the flip cover is all you need unless you work in a rough environment
> OR if you are clumsy and hard on your things.

> In regards to the m series durability, I've dropped mine a couple of times
> and it survived, but that means little. It depends on how it lands, what it

How did these not answer your question? What more do you want? 500 comments? Geez.

Altema @ 3/5/2002 10:03:51 PM #
Graph, I've seen quite a few 500 series (including the M505) dropped and banged around with no damage. They are built pretty solidly. I have seen only one screen crack, and that was due to the full weight of the owner on it with the cover open.

A little durability story: Back in January, I stopped to help a child who was being assalted. The attacker turned on me (don't know where his two friends came from!) and I wound up with a broken leg and busted nose among other things. My Palm was knocked out of my pocket while they were kicking me in the head,.. we found it later in the dirt and it had been stepped on and mashed into the ground. It only had the stock flip cover, but after cleaning it off, we found it had no damage except for a small nick on the back!

The metal/plastic sandwich construction helps a lot, and I recall seeing some inside photos which looked like there was a gasket or something to cushion the screen, but I could be mistaken. The IIIe had the screen right up against the edge of the case, and my own IIIe screen cracked after a TWO foot drop onto carpet. Like mentioned in the other posts, it depends a lot on the angle of impact, the surface material, and of course, velocity. Remember that the screen is glass, and if the glass itself is hit, it will probably break. If durability is a major issue you may want to consider the M130... the screen is smaller and plastic, both of which help ruggedness.
