Comments on: N760C No Longer Available from SonyStyle

In what is probably a sign that Sony will release the NR series in the near future, the PEG-N760C is now listed as "Sold Out" on Sony's webstore, SonyStyle. Until now, the N760C was Sony's flagship handheld but it is expected to be superseded in the near future by the NR series, which the company announced in Japan last week.

N760's death is assured

ImpReza @ 3/21/2002 4:03:17 PM #
This all but proves the discontinuation of the N760. Bring on the NR Series! We could certainly use the extra memory as well as the other features.

Hey Ed, any chance you have an average time from when other Clie models have 'Sold Out' to the time the new generation is released? Might give us an estimated date to look forward to.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/22/2002 9:18:51 AM #
I am selling my N770C which is only 2 months old. I bought that over the T series because of mp3. But since Sony never ever sells accessories to the European market and since the S and N connector is dead (they don't sell S series anymore), I think I will get a NR. The NR would be a Japanese OS. Since it's OS 4.1 do you think I can flash OS 4.1 from my old Clie to the NR?

btw, since OS 5 will be shipped to licensees this Spring/Summer, will be North American and European release of the NR series be MX based??

RE: N760's death is assured
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/22/2002 9:33:34 AM #
> The NR would be a Japanese OS.

It will be available in English in the U.S. in about a month. Can't you wait that long? The other versions of the OS aren't going to work on the NR. There are too many changes in the NR. I have no idea what the 770's OS would make of the 480 by 320 screen but I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be usable. And were you planning to write the virtual Graffiti drivers yourself?

RE: N760's death is assured
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/24/2002 11:46:59 AM #
Yeah, I know but I am in Europe, which takes 6 months for a new product from Japan to arrive. If there is a flaw in Sony, it's their marketing. Palm users know what is happening around the world. I wanted to upgrade to the T series but since the annoucenment of the NR series, I decided against since the 'new' T series is in fact an old model.

Wouldn't it be weird if...

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 4:08:44 PM #
Sony called the NR series like by an actual name instead of some crazy number? $5 for whoever can come up with the best name...

Perhaps the Clamie I and Clamie II ???

Ed @ 3/21/2002 6:14:24 PM #
It's nice to dream but not going to happen. All of Sony stuff has odd names. Think about it, Vaio, Aibo... What happened to the people who named the Walkman?

I'd call it the Proteus. He was someone from Greek mythology who could change into any shape and foretell the future.

the people who named the walkman most likely retired by now. i'm guessing that sony now names their products strange 4 letter words. Don't forget Wega.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 4:09:56 PM #
All you people who bought the N610/710/750/760 have all been given the BIG finger by sony. This company has only been selling PDA's for about a year and now these old machines, even though they were pretty nice, have been discontinued.

Guess what, now you WON'T find ANY accessories for that N760 you just bought a few months ago... This is pathetic. I truly feel sorry for all you Sony buyers.

At least companies like palm, handspring, compaq and Hp have tried to maintain "universal" connectors between updates to their pda's, BUT sony seems to think that those who own an N series Pda should now dump it in favor of the NR/T series. I'm not a sony basher but short lifecycles like these with no backwards compatability from newer products is just a blatant attempt to rip off the consumer.

ok thanks for your info. I really don't want to reply to this thread, but I think some action should be taken against morons.

1) look at the news, N-series can always use those MS modules accessories

2) the serial port is never the best way to expan your device, but it does have accessories that uses that port.

3) is there even a mp3 player on the Palm M-series, what are you barking about !? no accessories who has not accessories ?

He's right. Last month I loved my Clie. It was useful for keeping track of things and I really enjoyed playing games and reading on i. Ever since the 615 came out, I can't get any of the programs to work. Now with the NR coming, it has melted into a pile of slag in the corner. Oh well.

Gee, thanks for your concern!! Good thing I already got my keyboard, cell phone cable, memory sticks, and my 3 cases before they all magically disappear. It's been awful the past several months using such a lowly device, having to put up with fonts that actually look nice, never having an opportunity to use my up/down button because the jogdial grabs my attention, viewing pics in such great detail that it causes extra strain on my eyes. I only wish I could have seen your post before that dark day when I made my purchase decision.

Well Sony is getting to be like Toyota, how many Camry bodies in the last 12 years. However, those of us who actually think before we speak realize that we still have a well made machine and though we may lust after the fastest and the newest. These days the newest is old in 2 minutes. I am not defined by my PDA or so insecure that I feel "fingered" if a new one comes out. As others have alos pointed out the memory stick add ons will be pretty much applicable to most of the current clies for some time to come.

S360
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 5:31:18 PM #
S360 is still there and it has the same connector as the N-series. S-series and N-series share most of the accessories. Also as someone already said, MS modules can always be used. I do not see that you should worry.

Well all the people who bought the Toshiba e550 and e570 or the Audiovox Maestro are totally SCREWED cause Toshiba is not going to make either model any more and is coming out with a new connection for their new models. Atleast these current Sony owners have some accessories!

Okay, so Sony has changed the connector HOW many times? Like once?

Don't the S-Series (since their FIRST CLIE, the S300) and the N-Series share the same connector? So, they've only changed the connector for the T-Series, which was probably required due to smaller shape of the devices. And hey, they're KEEPING the T-Series connector in these new NR models.

Handspring has done the same thing. They changed connectors once, for their Visor Edge. Again, I assume it was simply to allow for the smaller form factor. Visor Solo, Deluxe, Platinum, Prism, Pro, and Neos all have the SAME connector. Hell, aside from the Prism, they all have the SAME body shape.

Palm has done it how many times? Three? Four? Let's count. Original Palm devices (Pilot Pros, etc etc). Palm III/VII series (assuming this was different to the originals, not sure). Palm V Series. Palm m100, m105. And finally the 'universal' connector. Even if they've only done it three times (originals, m100's, universals), that's STILL twice more than either Sony OR Handspring.

Of all company's, Palm appears to be the worst at propagating "blatant attempt[s] to rip off the consumer." m505 -> m515 anyone? How about m105 -> m125?

RE: SUCKERS!
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/22/2002 9:36:45 AM #
**** this. Palm, Sony, Handspring, Handera and Acer are all here to give us all a damn choice. Do you all go driving the same ****ing car. Granted if Ferrari's all costs the same as a Toyota, which would you buy? A Ferrari! But it does not! Same goes with PalmOS PDAs. The m505 has recently dropped to £199 in the UK. The T-625 and N770 costs £350. The m130 costs £230 and the m515 costs £320. There you go, there is a colour PDA for every budget. If you don't want colour there is a m100 for £45, a m105 for £98, a m125 for £150, a m500 for £190, a Clie S300 for £130, a Visor Edge for £150! You are all so ****ing childish. I am happy with every PDAs as long as it is a PalmOS PDA.

I have the Best Buy 3 year extended Warranty. Is that what you were talking about. Can you "trade up" and get another pda? I would pay the difference. Does anyone know if BB actually will allow you to trade up? I did not see that in the agreement. Do you have to bs them and tell them that your pda does not work to get a trade up deal? Or is this a totally different plan than what I have. Mine was 60.00 for extended 3 year. Not sure if it's the same plan.

Thanks in advance.

Glad to see all you sony lovers up in arms over my comments. I made the original comment above. I did not make the other "suckers" comment on the other thread.

Anyway, It's good to see you folks liven up a bit, it's too boring in these comment sections somtimes. Also by the way, I DO NOT own a PPC (God forbid). I do own a palm os device but I won't mention what it is since that has no relevance to my original comment.

And as far as the Sony NR series, I do stand by the original comment that sony will only disenfranchise many current clie owners by discontinuing items too quickly and creating new connectors for peripherals and such. ANd I have to agree with another post on here that mentions the clumsy clam shell design.

Good money down says the NR won't sell well in the US.

But, That's just my opinion.

Jolly Good. See you folks at the next Sony news item.

The lack of progress in the OS is not an issue for Palm, it's for PalmSource. The lack of progress in the OS is an issue to all palmOS licensee which includes Sony, handspring etc. Palm and Sony are partners not enemies although many childish users are...

"The lack of progress in the OS is not an issue for Palm, it's for PalmSource. The lack of progress in the OS is an issue to all palmOS licensee which includes Sony, handspring etc."

The problem is PalmSource is an independent compan for about 2 months only.

And when Sony make any progress in the Palm OS, those Anti-Sony Zealots will say it's not standard or it's proprietory and it'll lose support in 3 months.

This has been a bad week for me personally. My Palm Vx first got run over by my daughter's SUV [believe it or not it survived!], then it fell out of my pocket into a fountain at the local Mall, and finally gave out. Poor thing...I'm thinking of buring it on the weekend.

Any chance of seeing your ex-Palm V in the Palm Graveyard before you bury it?

Old Palms are dropping all over ...

My Palm IIIc got dropped the day before the new SONYs were announced (yes, my wife was suspicious), but I'm still waiting for good wireless options as well as a good POTS modem option before I buy one of the new SONYs.

Like the Palm IIIc in its day, these SONYs seem to have great screens but they have yet to achieve the connectability options of the newer Palms or Handspring or Handera.

Thanks, Robrecht

Sony did release a model that was never seen outside of Japan.
First color model of Clie, S500C.

RE: error iin article
rldunn @ 3/21/2002 4:52:20 PM #
No, error in your reading comprehension.

"Though a few people have doubted whether the NR series would be available outside of Japan, Sony hasn't released a Clié in Japan and then not also done so in the U.S. since the very first generation of its handheld line."

The S500 was, with the S300, the first generation of Clies. Since then, every model released in Japan has been released in the US.

Sold out on US Developer Site

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 4:53:20 PM #
The N760C is also shown as 'sold-out' on the Sony US Developer's site.
Haven't seen any news there on the NR models either.

What about something else than NR series?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 5:19:12 PM #
Why wouldn't Sony release a handeld specific to the US and european markets that usually don't like that much clam shell designs ?

I say that because my dream device would be the NR series, without the clamshell and keyboard... just the 66Mhz VZ, camera, sound, virtual graffiti :-))

But I must be dreamin'

RE: What about something else than NR series?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 5:29:42 PM #
if the NR werent clamshell, it would be 2 inches thick and 5 inches long.

RE: What about something else than NR series?
Ed @ 3/21/2002 6:02:37 PM #
David, do you dislike the size or the shape? I don't think a version of this without the keyboard would be much smaller.

Take a look at this picture:
http://www.clieclub.jp/clie_exbit/pages/nr100_jpg.htm
That's the clear demo version of the NR70V. Look at the area below the keyboard. It is completely taken up with a battery. So about a sixth of this entire handheld is its battery and there are already people expressing concerns about its battery life.

This makes sense as the screen is twice as big as any current Palm OS handheld's and the processor is twice as fast. Just judging from that, the NR series will draw about twice as much power as any current Palm model. The additional DSP chip, well known for sucking down power, is just icing on the cake.

While Sony could make a non-keyboard version of this handheld, I don't believe it would be much smaller because it would still need that battery.

Though someone could still make an argument that they'd be happy with a version that was roughly the same size but lacked a keyboard.

RE: What about something else than NR series?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 6:12:27 PM #
Why would it be 2 inches thick? By removing the keyboard and the double-casing, a one-piece version of the NR-70 would be THINNER than the NR-70.

RE: What about something else than NR series?
Timothy @ 3/21/2002 7:34:40 PM #
A model that would not have the clamshell would certainly be thinner. You would save the outside of the top and the keyboard surface. You could also save the hinge room (what does the hinge space hold in the non-camera model? Is it just wasted space?)

The thing would basically be a T615 at .6 inches thickness for the thicker battery. The screen would still fit on the front even if it were soft grafitti 480 by 320. Finding room for hard buttons on front might be tight, but push them all the way to the bottom.

It certainly could be done and it would be smaller overall than the NR70V, but I doubt we will see such. Who knows.

I just like the whole NR70V deal. Size-wize it it all that, same size as Zaurus, N760/710/610, just about right.

RE: What about something else than NR series?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/22/2002 5:08:09 AM #
In fact, my current dream machine would be a 615 with integrated mp3 player, virtual graffiti and fast 66Mhz VZ dragonball

But if sony doesn't release that I'll be happy with the NR serie... If sony ships it to France :-))

RE: What about something else than NR series?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/22/2002 1:21:43 PM #
Ed, without the keyboard in the way, they could make that whole panel a battery and make is self contained in the same sized unit (i.e. no hinges/swivels to break). You could still have the screen, virtual grafitti, and the camera, but have much better battery life.

Just my $0.02. =)

Im happy I got a N760C now because I love its small size since it fits in my wallet/pda case perfectly during the day and its small size is great for listening to mp3's at the gym or while riding my bike.

The new NR is cool but the clam shell design, built-in keyboard and larger size is not my cup of tea.

Glad you like your N760C. I was so close to buying one, too. They are nice. I have heard from virtually no one who regrets getting one.

I have held out for the 66MZ that I think will make WordSmith work better, but it had not been easy to wait with the 760Cs on sale and the T615Cs so small.

I am kinda glad the 760Cs are gone. Now, I won't be so tempted. Hope I like my NR70C as much as all the 760C owners like theirs.

'The 760 has been discontinued' does NOT mean that all shops who sold the 760 are scrapping every unit that is in their inventory!

Do you really think that overnight all 760 models will disapear from shops forever ?

RE: I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
mtg101 @ 3/22/2002 4:13:49 AM #
Some people seem to think that beyond all models in shops being scrapped - anyone who currently owns one will be hunted down by Sony reps to have theirs destroyed... The model being discontinued doesn't make any difference to how well the device serves you!

As for the size - yeah it's bigger than the N760C - but once you add a resonable case to the N760C it gets pretty big - whereas the NR series comes complete with its own case - so it may not be much bigger in real life use.

Well, I too am very happy to have gotten a N760 before they will no longer be found. I hate that clamshell design, and the battery life looks like it will be really bad. I personally am surprised they would discontinue the N760 and replace it with such a different design. I am sure there are a lot of people that would prefer a more traditional PDA with better battery life.

The 760C just fits in my pda/wallet so perfectly since I use this case for my pda but my cash and credit cards too. The NR clam shell design could not fit a leather wallet-type pda case and the NR would really be too big if it was put in a leather case with slots for credit cards and cash too.

The NR is a cool piece of machinery but I dont like to carry around a pda and a wallet seperately.

The NR is as thin as your N 760

Going to Japan this weekend!

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 8:36:49 PM #
Going to be in Toyko for a few hours on Sunday. Wonder if there are any electronics stores close to the airport?

Course, if the damned thing only speaks Japanese...

You won't find ANYTHING close to the airport

You will find these advertised in Akihabara. I was just there last week.

Interesting about Singapore. The reason that I am only going to be in Japan for a few hours is because I am heading for Singapore for two weeks. Might have to make a stop at that store you mentioned. Where is it?

Why is Dell shipping PalmOS PDAs??? I thought they have 'special relations' with Microsoft? Weird that Microsoft hasn't done anything to them yet...

Even Xerox's lawyers?

No more color CLIEs with good battery life being offered =[

dúnadan @ 3/23/2002 5:17:54 PM #
It's a shame the N-series will be gone because I think Sony should have at least one high-end color option with a good battery life. I have a T615 and an m515, and one of the many reasons why the m515 gets more use is that it has a much better battery life. What I really want is an m515 with a 480x320 screen, virtual Graffiti, and similar battery life. I wouldn't mind if the thickness had to be upped slightly to accomodate the battery.
