Comments on: FilePoint Pro Adds Desktop File Management

Bachmann Software has just introduced FilePoint Pro, which includes a desktop client that displays a picture of the file structure on the handheld, allowing users to more easily organize their files. Users can organize their handheld's data on their desktop PCs, and all changes to the file organization will take place during the next HotSync. FilePoint Pro now acts as a launcher, file management system, install tool, and card reader, all in one. It is available now for $50.

A good idea if $20,,,

...but $50 seems awfully high.

I sorta agree. This is worth about $30.

Have to agree, $50 is way past 'file utility' range. I know that this is a combo Palm/Desktop package, and I also know that their support is one of the best on the planet, but when your software budget has to cover a dozen or more applications...

It seems like it would be ok for one or two major software packages to be priced this high... but who buys only two apps for their Palm? I have over 30 registered applications ranging in price from $2.95, all the way up to $39.99 for a double license of networkable Monopoly. $30 is my price limit, but I made an exception because my wife likes the game so much. I've even seen some games which are too silly for me to bother download, costing more than $10. I think this trend has continued because people do not buy their apps all at one time.

Can you see Joe Somebody picking up his new Palm, selecting which software he would like, then heading for the checkout? "Yes sir, that will be $279 for your Palm, and $439 for your software. Have a nice day."

If it is not a real time of viewing Palm's file (or should say FilePoint) system, it is useless.

By the way for those of you who use SilverScreen The little half-arrow just below the "My Picks" arrow in the top right corner of the screen toggles between the icon view and the list view. In the list view mode, tap the + symbol next to "Name" and you will get a folder view of your apps and all their related files.

I can't see the point of this

popko @ 4/25/2002 12:40:26 PM #
Ah ... my eyes ... I can't see any thing ...

Current PalmOS based PDAs with memory card(s) can already act like removeable hard drive. So for $50 I buy a software that fool me into thinking that I can have file folders on my PDA's RAM?

Meteor seems to do a similar thing, and is only $10.

the point?

let me get this straight:

i use the palm os to get away from microsoft's windoze, and this program sticks it on my palm.

uhh, thanks? i needed this?

If I have to go windowz, at least let me do like SyncWizard. http://palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=30737. Real time drag and drop, real time edit and half of it's price...

To the original poseter,

Yes, there is a folder view on external media, but there is no folder view on internal memory. This application is used for internal media, which means it can applied to older PalmOS PDAs.

File point sucks! Terrible user interface. For $50 no thanks! There are alot better file managers out there.

Not worth even downloading.

Where's the value?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2002 3:34:33 PM #
Ok, you can organize the files in an app, what good is it? The fact of the matter is that the PalmOS has a simplistic file system, all files are recognized by the OS as being in one directory, the root (Unless you are using external media like CF, SM, MS, etc.).

For $50 to virtually catalog files into directories that are not recognized by the OS does not make any sense to me. Where's the value in this software?

I admit that it is difficult at times to find a file in a large list, but Launchers like Launc'Em and LauncerIII, etc. cover this issue in a much more logical and useful manner.

I would assume PalmOS 5 will have a more flexible file system that would have this type of capability built-in. Might be best to put the $50 towards a PalmOS 5 device later this year.

I should "listen" to this poster. I downloaded, installed, tried (10 min.), and uninstalled it.

Nor can I. When I think about all the time I have wasted over the years fiddling with File Mangler and Windoze Exploder, I just want to screem.

One of the best things about Palm OS is that it works just fine without file managers. But if you really want one, you can get one (and there are many to choose from).

Can your PocketPC do that?

Bad Q.A. ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2002 1:46:36 PM #
First time install on my XP, it did not nothing but crash my explorer. After reboot, it installed fine.

Followed the instruction, make everything works for one user (HotSync user). When I File/Change user, the program just crash out. $50 for a Beta quality program seems to high to me.

$50? It better fetch my morning paper.

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2002 11:13:32 PM #
Are they nuts? $50 for any Palm software is crazy, and Filez is free and does what I need it to do. My money better spent elsewhere.
wtf are they thinking? If they built in users will buy it?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/26/2002 12:09:31 AM #
I can't believe this $50 so that i can put my Palm on the cradle and view it on my desktop. What is the point of being mobile?

I've tried the regular version and will not even gonna try the Pro version. I don't see the point. There are alot better file managers that are free or sharware like Filez, fileMan, myWorkbench etc that costs 1/4 of the their asking price.

FilePoint points straight to the trashcan.

RE: $50? It better fetch my morning paper.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/26/2002 6:43:10 AM #
Agreed. There seems to be a mania going on with the developers some of high end Palm software ... they all seem to want to add desktop conduits. This is crazy. Every one I know who has a Palm bought it for mobility and usually they use it to replace desktop apps. As for me, my home PC is more and more becoming just an external backup device.

Just my 2 cents.

RE: $50? It better fetch my morning paper.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/26/2002 12:20:39 PM #
...not that this is "high end" Palm software in the first place!

Why no one likes Bachman software ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/27/2002 12:19:37 AM #
I think I am not alone! If they can spend more time on improving their software instead of releasing all free junky misleading press to make everyone felt themself being cheated all the time.

Desktop is useless

PIC mobile user @ 4/29/2002 9:55:04 AM #
and why I can't create new file associations like in McFile? But any it is great idea in this program.
