Comments on: Quickies: m505 on Sale, QCP-7135, Zire 8MB & More

The m505 is on sale at the Palm.com Store for $199 this weekend only.

PIC Reader adimiron writes, I've been hounding the local Verizon Wireless retailer about the Kyocera 7135 and tonight was rewarded. The Verizon rep confirmed that I would be able to buy the phone in 6 weeks (no exact date was given, though shipments apparently come in on Fridays). It was said that the price would be set at around $600 without a new activation. Nothing was said about a discount for new accounts.

Nevermind. It usually helps if I have a cup of coffee or so before I start posting.

Disregard the pricing comment.

But the link is correct, so click away. :P

Don't you just hate it when that happens...

It IS $60 off at Dell!
ardee @ 10/12/2002 6:15:12 PM #
You just have to add it to your cart to see the lower price.

Dell always has at least 10% PDAs off that way.

I bought my N760C there last year and my T665C there this past week (15% off on the latter)!

Who give a Zire?

gfunkmagic @ 10/12/2002 11:29:29 AM #
Hmmm lets see, get an upgraded Zire with 8MB of ram with no expansion capabilities for $150 or get a M505 for $200...

RE: Who give a Zire?
DrMac @ 10/12/2002 1:19:04 PM #
In Germany you pay about 320 Euro for a 505 and 170 Euro for a m125.But i suppose people who upgrade their zire in the future think differently. They pay 100 € now and if they want to upgrade to 8MB rather keep their device and pay 49 €.

RE: Who give a Zire?
graph @ 10/12/2002 7:53:44 PM #
nope. thats a wrong way of thinking. its just $150 for zire, no SD or color or $200 for SD,COLOR and metallic. you should think $50 for color,Metal casing, universal connectors which is a pretty good deal if you go for m505.

OR $150 for zire (8mb) VS. $100 for m105 8mb. Zire is then $50 more expensive. to equal everything, zire should only be sold for $49.

RE: Who give a Zire?
madhatter @ 10/12/2002 8:56:06 PM #
But remember.. the Zire is starting it's life cycle at 99.00.. the 105 is ending it's life cycle there. It originally was being sold for 199.00

I know the Zire is not for.. well... basically anyone who frequents this board.. but it is great for someone who still uses the paper organizer and wants to stick a toe in the pda waters.. I know it only has two megs and no card slot, but some of us don't need it. I have also heard the fact that it doesn't have a backlight.. but then again.. neither does a paper organizer!

Just 1.5 cents worth

Who cares about a life cycle of a unit? We are not Palm reps or employees. We would just care the price right now and what is inside the box. Certainly, the Zire does not deliver.

One final thing about Zire in place of a day organizer. This is ridiculous! I am sure everyone has a cellular phone that serves these two functions:
1)Phonebook
2)Calendar (although plain and stupid)

What's so different between a Zire and a cell? Except I have to pay another $100 and carry one more device? Don't forget - first-time users still have to bear the pain on learning graffiti, and so many will be frustrated on this until Palm OS rolls out a new handwriting recognization method.

A zire is not even suitable for a e-book reader. I have a set of books (in the same collection) that's already 2.2 MB. Where's the space for my address book, and how about my calendar? (Still don't know why Palm is smoking because a 8 MB RAM may only cost $2 (or less) more than 2 MB. Perhaps they will roll out a Zire m155 and put 8 MB RAM, and would like to price at $149. Everyone will switch to a SL-10 because they at least have a useful backlight!)

Exactly. Comments such as these come across as making excuses for Palm, Inc. The Palm community doesn't tolerate this sort of nonsense when the PPC camp does it, and we shouldn't tolerate it on our end either.

Don't get me wrong, the Zire is not an awful device. But it lacks Zen (certain folks love it when I mention Zen :) ). What does that mean? Well, it lacks a good combination of features, usability, size, and price. If Palm modified a couple of things, it could be great. It's actually pretty nice looking, has USB and rechargable batteries, and is small/light. But it's simply too expensive for what it offers at this point in time. At $60, I could recommend it. If it cost $99 but had a backlight and SD slot, I could recommend it.

When rumors of the "new, low cost Palm" started coming out a while back, I predicted that the smart thing for Palm to do would be to simply rebrand the m125 as a new device and sell it for $99. Even if they lost a little money on the unit, they could promote these things next to Palm-branded SD memory cards, SD e-books, SD games, etc. and make a profit off of those accessories (along the lines of how game console makers make their profits - they sell the boxes themselves at a big loss). Instead, they decided to create an entirely new small, sexier, feature-lacking device with (hopefully, for their sake) a bigger profit margin built in. We'll have to wait and see if this plan works.

Wow, an 8meg PDA for only $150! Now compare that to the SL-10 that also includes HiRes, Jog Dial (and all 4 buttons), and memory stick. Now tell me, who in their right mind would choose a Zire over a SL-10? It's easy to see why Palm stock is less than $.70 a share. What a joke!

Dell also has a better deal that got overlooked - T665

PalmAddict @ 10/12/2002 11:40:03 AM #
Dell has a great starting price on the T665C - $349.00, and with the 10% discount and free shipping, it's only $314.10.

And did I miss something, or did Sony just drop the price on the T665??? I could have sworn it was $399 on their site the other day....

DELLs PDA plans
Kaptain Korolev @ 10/12/2002 3:04:40 PM #
Talking of DELL, has anyone heard anymore about it's ownbrand PDA that it is preparing to launch. I've heard conflicting reports, some say it is go to launch before Christmas, others say that it had temporarily put the plan on hold.

If the prices in the article are correct the PDA market is going to be shaken up.

I just yesterday received my T665C from Dell. For 2 days they were taking 15% off (and free shipping and no tax). Their site still listed it at $399 but I called and convinced them that Sony had lowered the list price (which was true -- check out SonyStyle.com or Amazon.com) by $50 so they did that for me THEN took the 15% off, resulting in a price of under $300 delivered.

OK, OK, don't go off on me, but I thought I would chime in here. In my humble, but informed opinion I think Dell could be a future player in the palm OS device market as well. Funny as it might seem Mr. Dell and Mr. Gates arent golfing pals so I could see a move in the palm OS direction if the market warrants it. Just an observation.

DELL listens to customers and gives them what they want. Dell doesn't care if the OS is PPC or Palm - as long as they sell lots of units. Just as in their PC space, their only allegiance is to the customer. "You want Windows? No problem. You want Linux? No problem." If enough customers ask for it, Dell will offer it.

RE: Dell also has a better deal that got overlooked - T665
Kaptain Korolev @ 10/13/2002 4:16:15 AM #
While I agree with your view that DELL doesn't care what it sells as long as it makes good margins I don't agree it is totally hardware independent. DELL hasn't ever sold AMD based machines even when customers may have wanted them due to there better performance/price ratio.
Big companies like DELL are tied into unwritten 'agreements' with there suppliers. For instance if DELL started selling their own PalmOS PDA that undercut PPC machines significantly but offered similar functionality Microsoft mights start charging them a bit more per OEM copy of Windows.

RE: Dell also has a better deal that got overlooked - T665
Gekko @ 10/13/2002 7:35:38 AM #
Sure, price/performance/quality come into play but i was speaking in general terms. however - your AMD example is flawed - The majority of people/businesses want INTEL chips in their PC's - and Dell does not offer AMD for that fact as well as that Dell feels that AMD's quality is not at the same level as is Intel's. thus - Price is not the only issue. Dell will do what's best for their customers and keep them happy. that's why thy are so successful. you may want to read the book "Direct from Dell: Strategies that Revolutionized an Industry" by Michael Dell.

I think if there were a HD pda it would be a PPC. Think of the similairities, slow, expensive, prone to break-downs (crashes). And, owners of both think there is no competition to their product.

Zire on sale already

rickyspears @ 10/12/2002 4:55:43 PM #
The more I think about the Zire, the more I think that it might be an adequate entry level machine. I still think that even $89.99 is to high, but I might be able to convert some of my friends when they get to the $59.99 range. I think that's about the right price for this device. In fact, at that point, I could almost buy some of them as gifts. IMHO, I think they will aproach this price range sometime after Christmas.

RE: Zire on sale already
Timothy Rapson @ 10/12/2002 6:13:13 PM #
The list price for the Palm M100 in Japan has been the equivalent of $38 for months. This is at the Palm site itself. If Palm can sell them there for that little, they can sell these here for $50.

I think it very likely that Best Buy will be blowing these out at $50 by Thanksgiving.

7135 Release date

drw @ 10/13/2002 12:25:21 AM #
I don't think he was rewarded for hounding the verizon reps. I think they made an educated guess to placate him. I'm a cook, and cooks do this all the time to waitresses around the world: "when's it gonna be ready?" come back in two minutes "ok, is it ready?" almost, just a couple more minutes, etc.

I have no idea when the 7135 is coming out. There is a crack research team at www.smartphonesource.com (shameless plug) actively trying to figure this out. One individual there said he knew a verizon employee who saw an email on the company intranet saying it would be out Oct 18th, but then beta testers reported bugs that caused the release date to be pushed back. The most important contact in a Verizon store is the inventory manager. The best info anyone will get imho is to have that person call you when the boxes are in his possession. Any other rumors are hearsay.

I took a look at your site, and in your own forums, a separate VZW rep (rpander) confirmed that they were aiming for a release in November (Thanksgiving).

This begs the question as to where exactly are you getting *your* information from if not from your own site with the "crack team"?

Just curious.

I just tend to believe that if a rep is given a demo of the phone and told 6 weeks/Mid-November, then that is the current plan. If you have VZW reps in your forum saying *the exact same thing*, what other source of info do you have that contradicts *both* VZW reps?

Order of fries to go, please

RE: 7135 Release date
Token User @ 10/14/2002 3:36:24 PM #
I read both sites - because I am at a point of waiting for either the 7135 or getting a replacement T68 and a Tungsten.

The smartphonesource forum is a good source of information, but at this stage I would refer any comments about delivery dates to the "research team on crack". Every man and his dog is "talking to their Verizon rep" or has "a brother who's girlfriends uncle works with a guy whose son sells phones in the mall" that swears that the phone will be delivered 18 October, no wait, 31 October, no wait, 1 November, no wait, 4 to 6 weeks (ah moving target!), umm, 30 November, oh, next year sometime, early we hope, maybe before Christmas but probably not.

They are still shaking some bugs out of the phone. The bugs may or may not be serious enough for Verizon to delay release until everything is perfect. Fortunately, software for cellphones goes through a much more rigourous testing cycle before it gets releaed to the public - the carriers don't want phones that randomly dial 911.

Be patient. Personal prediction is that the phone will be released before Xmas, possibly in conjunction with a release somewhere like Comdex (mid November). A very cool (though frustrating) tie-in would be a launch on the Superbowl weekend ... after all, San Diego is the heart of CDMA territory, and the game will be played at Qualcomm Stadium. But, that is pure speculation, and probably just as accurate as anything anyone else is saying.

Verizon testing is probably the most conservative group on the planet. This is why they never released the I300, it never met the stringent specs of the company (I know, I received a beta unit, and it never hit the streets). So while they may be planning a certain date, if they uncover a bug with two days before anticipated release, I can guarantee you they'll delay the release before they allow it in their market. They're way too conversative if you ask me, but apparently it works for them.

There's a 12 dollar MIR on the CDRs, so you get those basically free, and that pushes your total high enough to use the 20 off 100 coupon. If you really want to lower the price a few more bucks, staples has a free after rebate 56k modem you could use instead of the CDRs. But at least you get something useful with the CDRs.....
