BLACKBERRY UNLIMITED EN ON VERIZON

Does this mean that the Blackberry Unlimited Express Network option through Verizon Wireless that can be added to Kyocera 7135 features will provide push capability to the 7135 or will we need to buy other services from Blackbery?

I betcha all we'll see is the server side software initially, and nothing on a device level for some time. I would imagine that Palmsource's goal in all this is to allow their current device licensees (Palm, with specifically the Tungsten C and W; and other licensees) to deliver push e-mail in a way that allows those device manufacturers to compete with RIM and Good, etc.

So for you and your 7135, there would have to be convergence somewhere (where? Verizon? but they already have a gig with RIM) for you to realize any value out of this.

Will be interesting to see how all this plays out.

Is it just me or does it seem like PalmSource has gained a lot of traction recently? All the developments I have seen the past fews days are all very positive for the platform.

In this morning's keynote address, David Nagel did state that Palm OS 6 was now mostly feature complete, and that they were entering the integration, testing, and polish phase.

I think it's definitely great for them and am glad to say I've been with the Palm OS since the beginning and PPC never tempted me. Now I can't wait to upgrade!!

Palm (inc) and its partners are going to diversify the market choice. Palm PDA with GPS (Garmin iQue) now is Palm + Blackberry. It's tough for the competitors (which include M$) to take the domination for handheld devices.

This brings a whole new level of professionalism to both Palm and RIM! There are thousands of corporate users that standardized on RIM technology, and once they see that the Palm OS can handle their needs, we may see some corporate converts!
It will be interesting to see how it is implemented... Will it work with any Internet connection (via bluetooth, WI-FI, etc...) or will it be limited to specific kinds of Palms?

Well, just my 2 cents here:

I've been figuring Palm to buy the remnants of Handspring when the price dips low enough and there is a compelling reason to do so...now there is.

I forsee Palm buying/merging w/ Handspring and relaunching the Treo line with the BlackBerry capabilities standard.

Palm's wireless line will be data-only wi-fi/BT enabled units (think the T|C with BT built in) and the i705 and T|W will be quickly forgotten about after all of this occurs. So then Palm will have a drastically simplified lineups of Zires (consumer-oriented non-networked handhelds), Tungstens (corporate units with data-only short range wireless options) and the Treo smartphone line.

I highly doubt they'll make any sort of Blackberry solution available for older Palms or for any Palm that isn't "Blackberry-enabled" out of the box. Why? It'd be too tempting for corporations to buy a bunch of cheap m500's (or even Vx's) with wi-fi sleds and press those into service campus-wide. The handheld market is entering into the same plight faced by desktop manufacturers--no compelling reason to upgrade. For most folks, a Palm V and a PIII 450 (both from 1999) suit their basic needs perfectly, so Palm SG is going to have to come up with a new must-have reason for people to upgrade (since color's already played out).

I would have thought so as well, but I was surprised by
the number of T|Ws I saw at the PalmSource Seminar this past week. In a small population like that I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one or two. I counted at least 8 though. The T|W must be hitting some sort of market segment.

You saw 8 and it was at a PalmSource Seminar. 7 or all 8 were probably Palm/AT&T Reps. I wwouldn't eexatly call that reaally "hitting some sort of market ssegment".

I had a 705 and I loved the PUSH email. (hated the rest of the features of the service though...) I have a Tungsten W now and I just presumed that it would have PUSH email. Was I dissappointed that I now had to log on to see if I had mail. THis will be great. Hope they can make some type of patch for me.

Changing Business Model

If RIM is licencing their software to other PDA and mobile tool corporations, this would severly undercut their own hardware. One would have to assume that they are changing from a hardware to software business model, and that Blackberrys will no longer be the focus of their business.
