Palm has lowered the price of the Tungsten T handheld by $50 to $349. Palm is also offering a new incentive to trade in your old handheld for a discount on a new Palm model.

I would hope this means a new T|T model around the corner, but more than likely sales have been dissapointing..

I've *never* seen a T|T out in the "real world" used by anyone other than myself...and that was even attending the big NAB conventional in 'Vegas last month. I've talked to a guy I know who works for BBuy and he said that the initial T|T sales were tremendous, but they took a nosedive after the unit had been on the market for 6 weeks or so.

On the flip side, I've already seen two Z71's out and about and helped my againg father buy one yesterday because "it's easy to read the screen". If nothing else, Palm may start to recpature some sales in the geriatric PDA users--since the Prism is long disctontinued, Palm hasn't offered a model that could do that since the IIIc!

Seriously, though, there are great deals to be had right now if you can take advantage of the trade-in offer. Office Max is giving away a free 32mb Palm SD card this week with purchase of a Z71.

I've see just a few T's but no Z71's yet. I'm hoping that the next version is on the way. I bought mine two weeks ago, but my wife loves it so much she wants a T|T for herself. Now... if only they release the new version before she gets hers, I can give her mine and get the new one ;)

Usually you didnīt see more than 3 pocket PC units in those lists, now you see 5 (50%).... will things keep this way as an equilibrium of the market?

Not only are the PPCs 50% of the list, 3 of them sell better than anything except the latest and greatest units from Palm. Palm needs to study its market more closely.

This is the problem of a top ten chart: it only says the hiearchie of the sales volum, and not how much is the gap between then. If the Palm OS machines had been reduced to one new all killer machine to sell, we could have be now arguing about the fact of having one only palm in the chart... unware if it sells ten times more or not than all the other brands of the chart combined :-). To discuss a top ten chart without the numbers is meanningless.

Alternatively, $300 minus $50 Palm trade-in, plus $25 Staples rebate for any color Palm = $225 for a Zire 71 (though the new "comparison shop" feature shows some places selling the Zire for $260ish, plus varying levels of shipping fees, so it might be cheaper to go that way. It depends how "authorized Palm resellers" are defined.)

Just a thought. Oddly, I was just wondering what I'd do with my old Handspring Visor Deluxe, which has served me well for three years, and still is in very good condition. $50 from Palm may be better than what I'd get for such outdated tech elsewhere. Wonder what Palm is going to do with all the old beasts? Build a fort? Laugh? Make a seige weapon to launch them at PPC manufacture headquarters? :)

They are going to take all of the palms and take them apart and put all the screens togetherto make a gigantic tv screen with it and hook all the processers up with it to make one crazy biggest computer ever that is very fast two..since there will be all different handhelds, this will be a poster product for unity that all people should get along as handhelds do....

spell was wanting to know what they are doing with the old palms - I talked to this guy who has a palm that knows this other guy who has nothing to to but route info from info sites about crazy things and this was submited.

Personally, I think Palm's trying to rid the market of any and all old Palms that use Graffiti 1. Yeah, the T|T still uses it and it's part of the promo but Palm will probably announce soon that all existing stocks of T's have been extinguished and that everyone should order a Z71 instead.

Of course, this trade-in deal may end up costing Palm more down the road than had they just tried to work out something mutually agreeable with Xerox. They could make G2 standard in all of the new Palms and have something like a "Graffiti Classsic Enhancement Pack" available for download (like a fancy Tealscript type of thing) and charge $20 for it. (mostly) Everyone would be happy in such a situation.

Palm will probably end up refurbishing theese old units as best they can and either selling them in bulk to schools/non-profit organizations or giving them to a distributor to try and sell in less-developed areas of the world (India etc).

Observation: You cannot take advantage of Staples current $25 rebate AND Palm's $50 trade-in program at the same time. The fine print for each specifically say you need to send in the original UPC code from your new Tungsten or Zire 71. Obviously you can only send original cutout of UPC to either Staples or Palm.

Zire is still cheaper. The T can be had with a free camera, but it's not as good as the one in the Z71. Unless you need voice recording or are crunched for RAM, or just think the T is really cool looking, you'll be fine with the Zire.

On the plus side, the Zire has a better screen and battery life, and the camera is built-in. On the negative side, it's bigger, can't record audio, the speaker is on the back, and there's no Bluetooth radio.

The joystick? I don't know if that's a plus or a minus.

Hey Altema, has it been actually confirmed that the Z71's battery life is better than the T|T's? I had assumed that, all things equal (BT turned off on the T, no camera usage on the Z, etc) that the T|T's rundown time was a bit better than the Zire's.

The joystick is definately a minus. I have a TT, and have used the z71. I strongly dislike the joystick, it's very hard to use. Also, the z71's camera is really blury if you don't hold it steadily. Personally, I recomend the TT.

You can also get a T/T at Amazon now for $325 out the door (free shipping
and no sales tax). Combined with Palm's new $50 trade-in program, the net
cost would be $275 - a pretty darn good deal and a good reason to trade in
that old Palm III series monochrome dinosaur.

That a Tungtsten T replacement is coming soon or we already have it. Best BUy in my local area no longer sells Tungsten T's. They say it is a discontinued model.

I posed something a week or two ago in the forums about this. I'll give a brief recap here just to be helpful in fanning the flames:

I received my Sega Games Card from the Palm Store recently. It's ok but overpriced for what you got-the Dr.Robotnik game is mysteriously missing from the compilation and the speed of the emulator is no better than it was a month ago when I downloaded it. I'd be curious to see how well it performs on a T|C, though. Anyway, the most interesting part of this new games card is that on the packaging (the little black box on the front cardboard insert) it says "compatible only with Zire 71, Tungsten C, Tungsten T *SERIES*"

Now, why didn't Palm just say "compatible only with Z71 and Tungsten T&C"?

Or they could have said "....Tungsten series*" and then below it had " *incompatible with Tungsten W handheld"

My ultimate point is that there is some very curious wording on that package that would suggest a new T|T is indeed on the horizon. I'd suspect nothing more than OS 5.2.x and more ram-same screen, cpu, etc. Maybe Palm will resurrect the "x" and "xe" designations from their past and every model from here on will have its original nomenclature, then the updated one 6 months down the road will be the "x". Hmmmm.

The local best buy dropped their price down to $349 a few weeks ago. This is the same Best Buy that dropped the price of the Tungsten T to $399 a few weeks before it was announced here.

It's the best, most applicable Palm I've ever owned and I've owned one from every generation going back to the USB Pilot days. (Pilot, Palm III, Palm VII, Palm M505 Palm IIIC, and now the T) I've had mine since last October.

If a new T replacement arrives, it'd better have Bluetooth and the same expansion capabilities.

I use my T BT capabilities with my T68i from AT&T Wireless and my BT Jabra Headset. Why carry a Palm around that enables wireless/data connectivity when we all change service plans every year or two?

My only, ONLY wish is that the T had 32 MB of RAM on-board. I'm now using my T as my MP3 player, my Audible.com player, my wallet pictures, game machine for the airport and the traditional contacts and scheduling. I never thought I'd use a PDA as much as I use this one.

Does anyone know when the T upgrade is scheduled to arrive?

Yes you can!! The T comes with email client software that is easily configured. It does not, however work with Hotmail (though you can still access it through the browser..)

See how afraid we've become to hope for more from Palm? If they are upgrading the T, it should also have the improved screen of the Z71 and the RAM and processor of the Tungsten C! Personally, I don't want the camera but I would definitely like the integrated photoalbum software of the Z71. OK, now everyone don't go crazy and ask for 1024 MB of RAM, but let's at least hope that Palm is on the way back ... Or maybe I should be more concerned about battery life in the T form factor?
