There are three entries in the Staples database:

Sku no. 561401 Sony Handheld price $199.99
Sku no. 561402 Sony Handheld price $299.99
Sku no. 561444 New HH price $349.99

So far we're thinkin' the TH55 will be $349 :D.

If the TJ37 comes out at US$300 I think it is going to get some dust in BestBuy's shelves. The TE includes audio and the specs seem superior except for the camera... and did I mention that it is cheaper?

No - the T|E has no Wi-Fi, voice recorder, or camera. Depending on yr needs - these are important additions. The Wi-Fi will be the obvious advantage here - still no wi-fi SD for Palm and even then the extra cost will more than make up the diff between the T|E and this Sony model (plus yr expansion slot will used up).

Aparts from functionalities... the size of TH55 seems very very good.

TH55: 73.3 ¡Ñ 121.5 ¡Ñ 13.4 mm (w/o cover), 165 g

TT3: 76 x 109 (slider closed) x 13 mm, 156g

Want to know about its' battery... hope better than TT3's 3 hours.

Holy crap and yahoo! My trusty old 760C has been starting to act up as late, and I've been burning offerings to the gods for Sony to release something in time to upgrade. If the pricing isn't too insane, this will be mine. Where do I preorder?!!
RE: Dream comes true????
Enfors @ 1/13/2004 3:13:25 AM #
The jog dial is actually in a brilliant position if you think about it. If I understand correctly, there's left / right buttons on either side of it (as well as a "back" button). Try placing all those on the side of the device, and operate them all with one hand only. It would be very awkward. With this setup, you can easly access all buttons with your index finger, while you hold the device securely between your thumb and your remaining fingers. And since the flip cover is transparent, this will be a very good way of looking up data with only one hand.

T4?? are there any reasonable rumors of a T4?

RE: Dream comes true????
Timothy Rapson @ 1/13/2004 12:56:27 PM #
RE: Reasonable rumors of T4?

Best Buy and some other chain recently listed the T3 as discontinued. But, no I haven't seen the kind of information about T4 that we have seen about the Zire 31 and TE2.

I am not really expecting a T4 before OS 6. I really like the software updates of the T3 and the extreme speed. I especially like the friendly way you can pop up the time with one button, as I use my Clie as a watch. In fact, I stopped wearing a watch shortly after I got my Clie without thinking about it.

I suppose there will be utilities that allow screen rotation, larger clips (in fact, Sony has some new cut and paste feature built in) and the rest. But, overall Sony is not doing software as well for my desires as PalmOne is.

Maybe I should buy one of each--TE2, T3, T4, TH55, TJ37, UX50 -- compare them all and send the ones I don't like all back. No, that would hardly be fair to Dell Online.

RE: Dream comes true????
Timothy Rapson @ 1/13/2004 1:09:13 PM #
OOPs! Now, I remember where I read about the discontinued OS 5ers. iNOMAD mentions them below.

RE: Dream comes true????
rsc1000 @ 1/13/2004 3:04:28 PM #
The T3 still wins in terms of memory (64 vs 32) and landscape - why doesn't sony do landscape? (and with the UX - why don't they do portait? WTF?). Maybe Sony is just waiting for OS 6 (which reportedly has landscape built-in) so that they won't have to introduce an incompatible landscape API - who knows.

RE: Dream comes true????
Timothy Rapson @ 1/13/2004 6:26:00 PM #
The TH55 wins in non-slider, camera, WiFi, and possibly better battery life. I don't like the Memory Stick format, but I already have several memory sticks so I might not need to buy another until they get down in six months to the price that SDs are at now. Pathetic, I know, because by then SDs will be even cheaper still.

I may get a $270 Minolta G400 digital camera with the dual MS and SD slots instead of the $150 Minolta X20 that only includes SD slot. Another extra expense and even then, I won't be able to run standard AVI or MPEG movies from the camera on the Clie without runnig them through the desktop with Kinoma first. This sure could be easier. But, it is what it is.

Memory too small

Obelix @ 1/13/2004 12:29:08 AM #
32 MByte Memory (maybe only 23MByte useable) is too less. Standard should be 64 MByte, 128 MByte would be nice.

--------------------------------------
Psion5 -> PalmV -> Filofax -> iPAQ5450 (stolen after 2 month) -> Clié SJ22 -> iPAQ2210 -> TungstenE -> Tungsten T3

RE: Memory too small
Gazpacho @ 1/13/2004 8:56:45 AM #
I agree that 32 Mb is too less, but please read the specs: it is 32 Mb usable, no less. :)

There is however 32 Mb ROM. I guess the new Clié apps take in a lot of space, but I'm sure some room could be freed up in there with a new version of Jacksprat.

RE: Memory too small
LiveFaith @ 1/13/2004 11:46:11 AM #

There I was on the verge of having to pick myself up off the floor after reading about the screen being 320x480 in a non-clamshell form factor, when one little detail completely burst my halcyon happy bubble. OS 5.2.1???? No OS6?!?!? What the hell is up with that? Why would Sony introduce a hot new PDA running OS 5 now? Jeez, I'm going back to bed. I can't believe you guys woke me up for this news.

They're releasing another os5 clie because os5 is just over a year old, and they want to release some more devices under the current license. I just hope that they have an os6 upgrade later this year.

RE: Why does Sony always do this to me?
Timothy Rapson @ 1/13/2004 1:12:39 PM #
I'm not bothered by OS 5. In fact, I already know that BugME, DiddleBug, FITALY, TealPaint (finally! over 1 year late), WordSmith run. I am not interested in waiting another year for those to run correctly on OS 6.

As to 32 MB. It seems cheap to me too. Wonder if they will do the same they did with the other Handeld Engine, the UX and include all that other odd memory? Either way, it is marginal, but workable for me.

And, Sony is not bad on upgrades. They upgraded at least one model. I am not sure, the old 610? It was from OS4 to OS 4.1 or something. With these models coming out just after OS 6 went gold master, I would think that they know enough about it to know whether or not upgrades are possible, but just don't have the time/desire to go all the way through the approval/documentation/testing to ship them with OS 6. It might be worth waiting a few weeks to see if there is official announcement of upgradability. I will have to wait until I am sure FITALY works.

RE: Why does Sony always do this to me?
hkklife @ 1/13/2004 2:57:42 PM #
It was the old 710C and it was Sony's first "serious" entry into the PDA market. They offered a choice of do-it-yourself or mail-in upgrades to OS 4.0 (from 3.5) so it could support 16-bit color. Don't kid yourself--Sony ONLY made that offer at the time to get their foot in the door of the handheld market and because they wanted to start off on the right foot. At that time they also offered a slew of accessories for their Clies, had halfway decent buttons, and packaged a memory stick & a cradle in the box. You don't find any of those freebies anymore (except for a cradle on some models) nor will you ever see another Clie with any sort of upgrade path short of the occasional small bugfix or application update.

I personally think Sony would be wise to consolidate their product line so there is less overlap (ie one model w/ Wi-Fi, one model without or one model w/ a built in camera and one without etc) but so that all of the major price points can be nailed---say, from $150 to $400 or $100 to $350.

I'd personally be more likely to buy one Clie per year priced at $200 each than I would be to buy one $400 Clie every other year-"top of the line" doesn't mean that much anymore when a low-end model beats the pants off the top model of a year ago.

Let's see now. OS 6 allegedly "shipped" to licensees 15 days ago. Assuming that code was x-ferred via wire to Sony, here is all they might of had to do to get OS 6 into the TH55 ...

Sony had 14 days total to:
#1 Flash the OS into a pre-production TH55
#2 Load the conduits onto a Win 95 PC
#3 Test the conduit in dozens of configurations of Win 95
#4 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.
#5 Check PIC to see if device is leaked yet?
#6 Turn completely tracked results, screenshots and protocols over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.
#7 Load the conduits onto a Win 98 PC
#8 Test the conduit in dozens of configurations of Win
#9 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.
#10 Turn completely tracked results, screenshots and protocols over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.

#13 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.
#14 Turn completely tracked results, screenshots and protocols over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.
#15 Load the conduits onto a Win 2000 PC
#16 Test the conduit in dozens of configurations of Win
#17 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.
#18 Turn completely tracked results, screenshots and protocols over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.
#19 Load the conduits onto a Win NT PC
#20 Test the conduit in dozens of configurations of Win
#21 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.

#25 Return to previous step until all errors and conflicts are solved.
#26 Check PIC to see if device is leaked yet?
#27 Turn completely tracked results, screenshots and protocols over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.
#28 Load the conduits onto a Win XP Pro PC
#29 Hold a series of engineering & marketing meetings which determine that loading and supporting Macs for OS6 are unnecessary.
#30 Turn this conclusion over to publishing department for documentation for this OS.
#31 Test OS6 with all basic Sony apps in order to produce valid results
#32 Lose sleep in hope that another SJ25-35 recall disaster occurs
#33 Return to previous step until all errors resolved for hardware & software

#64 Remember to send another package to FCC with specs and details of device
#65 Fire the junior engineer who forgot
#66 Catch, restrain, depose and box up the cubicle contents of an employee not only posessing a Palm Zire 71, but taking photos of the TH55 and uploading them to a Chinese website.
#67 Check PIC to see if device is leaked yet?
#68 Device arrives at FCC and sits in mailroom till 1:45PM

#72 FCC employee returns the next day and gets to work on the new TH55
#73 FCC employee realizes at 10:23am, that documentation did not come with it contacts mailroom

Guys remember that this device was filed for approval by the FCC on or around Dec. 14. That's about two weeks before OS 6 was technically released to companies. Sony really couldn't do anything (IMHO) to change the TH55 to OS6 in two weeks since they recieved OS6. I could be wrong...but I think I'm right :p.

Livefaith, as we say in Colombia: I have to take my hat off if you wrote all that stuff!!!

Anyway, I must defend the OS5.2 selection quite a bit: the software base is quite good at this point and the previous sony models have not been as succesful as their early ones (T760, 615, NR). Besides it has become quite a tradition for sony to keep using their previous OS licenses. Not too long ago they were still selling OS4.1 and currently they still sell OS5 models so why should we expect a different behaviour?

Well, he did make his point. It's really unrealistic to expect any of these new models to run OS 6.

I don't think it impacts release of OS 6 models either. I'm sure Sony has been planning those in anticipation of getting OS 6 from Palmsource.

MountainLogic @ 1/13/2004 11:37:43 AM #
The FCC released the information as a proper function of an open goverment. These are *your* public records.

WOW! A freedom lover. Good point.

BTW, Check out the Michael Jackson look-alike in the reflection of the "TH55" photo! Check the 4 finger gloves? :-)

Anyway, Sony has created a winner that the Palm crowd has been begging for since the release of the TT & NR. 320x480, thin & clamshell!

ANOTHER Photo is revealing

LiveFaith @ 1/13/2004 11:56:52 AM #
Another photo reveals more about the TH55 ...
http://www.pdalive.com/showarticle.php?threadid=5210

From this one it looks like the launcher bar found on the TT3 is going to be there for 320x480. Maybe that's an OS5.2.1 standard and I didn't realize it? Anybody else notice that?

RE: ANOTHER Photo is revealing
Timothy Rapson @ 1/13/2004 1:20:00 PM #
The hi-res+ Clies have all had the bar across the bottom. It comes standard with just a memory stick, battery life and time icons. But, you can add those functions almost right up to and in some ways ahead of the T3 bar.

RE: ANOTHER Photo is revealing
beaumich @ 1/13/2004 1:48:51 PM #
To make this bar more functional, check out NRButtons at www.standalone.com/palmos. Lots of other fun stuff there, too.
RE: ANOTHER Photo is revealing
LiveFaith @ 1/13/2004 4:15:38 PM #
Is Palmsource going to standardize that bar or will the licensees all create their own version?

RE: ANOTHER Photo is revealing
Verteron @ 1/13/2004 4:42:16 PM #
PalmOS 5.3 has standardised virtual silkscreen abilities, but it's not an English version. OS6 almost certainly standardises the bar.

damn sony.
backlyt @ 1/13/2004 10:56:57 PM #
You know what? I have a lot of respect for sony, and i was a little ticked with all the n~ series' and then the ux series (so horribly useless) then the not to mention the recent ones with the scroll wheel on the front, and i thought that sony could reverse course, but whoever has been creating these stupid designs is clearly on acid and the one giving the go-ahead is probably fartin' around on some carribean island and will put his signature on anything cause they clearly dont give a damn. i mean honestly! who puts a scroll wheel on the front! or the back for that matter!!! I mean come on! you dont have to be a bloody rocket scientist to figure out that the only useful place for a scroll wheel is where your thumb normally rests, or else what point is there?!?! unfortuanity this cant help the lefties out there, and this is why i suspect that they did this, none the less, other provisions could be made. if you dont like the scroll wheel cause your a lefty, than go buy a palm, do something for the greater good instead of ruining a perfectly good innovation cause some people arnt happy. and as for microdrives? the new toshiba .75" drive. able to hold 2 or 4 gb of data, while being able to fit inside a bottle cap would be a great solution, if sony would get off its lazy ass and do something about the lousy battery life thats out there. sony used to stand for innovation (well, 3m more so i guess) but now they've gotten down to copying others ideas, changing awesome technology for the sake of only changing it and not improving it, and creating stupid design ideas that completly take the idea of "portability" out of PDAs, which is what they were initially designed to be. even with all this "advanced" technology, we still cant make a device with what you would assume to be the correct leap from the palm III era and before, and fit it into a case at least compairable in size and bulkiness if not smaller. and we still cant make a better battery to last longer, to power these so called mulitimedia devices for long enought to really enjoy what they have to offer without having to worry about backing up all your data on redicuously expensive, big, and not to mention PURPLE (purple card in a black or silver device? what were they thinking!) media card that isnt standard with anything else but the egotistical sony, and thats assuming that its memory stick PRO compatable! Who seems to be having an identity crisis, as we all know. darn! memorystick SD came out! (SD standing for Super Dooper) now i have to replace all my sony stuff or they will all self-distruct! no wait... thats only when the warrenty ends. the best PDA i have every owned for 3 years is my faitful T-415. held together with tape, cause the 4 screws that held the batter cover on were literarly 3mm long, but it still works and has taken what every i have thrown at it, and i dont exactly "charish" my tech, i USE it. and thats more that i can say for any of the $1000 and above products that are out there.
thank you for reading my rant, and please PIC, dont edit it or delete it.

RE: ANOTHER Photo is revealing
backlyt @ 1/14/2004 5:59:14 PM #
thats a very good idea. this is literarly THE perfect palm for me, except for the stupid jog"cylinder" and i really have no use for a camera. if i want quick shots, i want GOOD QUALITY quick shots, with flash. the choice in buying this device will rest entirly on 2 things, a:the quality of the screen and b: the battery life. any less than 4 or 5 hours is shameful.

Raining on the TH parade

mikecane @ 1/14/2004 11:00:56 AM #
Right.

It uses the HHE. The UX uses the HHE. Could it be that the TH will have a screen AS DIM AS the UX?

JogCylinder (it's NOT a JogDIAL) -- will onlookers understand what I'm doing with my finger? Or will they think I'm doing an obscene "Come over here" gesture? Will Sony cover medical bills that result from such misunderstandings?

Camera -- ARGH! THAT's the thing that's taken away a PROPER JogDial. If it wasn't for that being included, the JD would be on the side where it belongs (to the eternal frustration of the Spawn of Satan -- lefties!). I'd do without a camera (which are being banned in more and more places!) for a proper JogDial. Maybe that'd even drop the price to just ** $300 **!

mikecane @ 1/14/2004 11:14:22 AM #
And what about this Clie Organizer shizzle?

Brighthand is reporting that it is ONE app with that tabbed interface. WHT will this mean later on if I want to switch from a TH to a TungT4?

And where's Memo Pad?! I DON'T WANT freehand notes, dammit. I want my Memo Pad!

And there's this too: the latest NXes included the *full suite* of PalmOS font sizes, including the teensy two which are unreadable even on that hires+ screen (unreadable, but *great* for seeing an *entire paragraph* at once to select!). Which the TH include them? Eh? Eh?

absoco, get on the phone to kutaragi and have him answer these questions. I know you and him are like *that*. According to you, he's been following "abosco's CLIE Plan." (ROTLMAO!)

It could use 200 MZ and a fat 1700 mAh battery. But, I am not expecting one. The NZ has a user hot swappable battery. Do any other Sonys? I am about ready to get a new battery for my NR (They last only so long.) I wonder if I could have two swappable batteries to use one after the other for the past two years and still have lots of life left in them, or if they only last two years whether you use them hard (as in built-in battery) or use each half time (as in a swappable design.)

Anyway, odd jogger or not, weak battery or not, cheap 32 MB RAM or not. The first decent HVGA I can get for $300 or less will get my money this Spring.

Does the TH55 use OLED screen?

Guinfs @ 1/14/2004 1:22:18 PM #
If so this could be the reason why the battery will last longer than previous models. To me it would be the perfect Clié if it actually had bluetooth and the enhanced IR + Clié remote.

The pdf specs say the display is a backlit TFT LCD.

Sony: We've Got some good news and some bad news.

Hal2000 @ 1/14/2004 6:06:25 PM #
So, to get a decent screen, we have to put up with a rear facing jog wheel? What if it scrolls when sliding it on the table? Buy the way Mike, Come hither finger is hilarious.

hotpaw4 @ 1/14/2004 9:13:11 PM #
I can only guess that they might have put the scroll barrel in back in order to keep the case from getting too tall. If you look at the TJ35, it requires a lot more room below the Graffiti area for all the buttons, scroller and T-connector. And an HVGA backlit TFT requires even more space inside the case than does a Graffiti digitizer area.

Whats Palm gonna do

DeNiro @ 1/15/2004 12:10:49 AM #
These should really give Palm a run for the money, the TH55 looks very interesting and promissing. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth would really make my life easier.

Although I'm still holding out for PalmOS 6 I wonder what Palm is going todo to counter this. If they don't do anythign about it and Sony keeps on releasing devices like these, Sony coudl effectively push Palm out the market.

RE: Whats Palm gonna do
LiveFaith @ 1/15/2004 4:35:28 AM #
Three points:
#1 The rumored Tungsten TE2 has 320x480 and comparible specs
#2 Who knows the price point
#3 Sony has not "released" such a device, unless you work for the FCC of course.

Pat Horne; www.churchoflivingfaith.com
RE: Whats Palm gonna do
Timothy Rapson @ 1/15/2004 8:29:34 AM #
The Palm to go after this TH55 is the Zire 91 (or whatever the next model might be called.) PalmOne has already updated the Tungsten T2 in exactly the way this TH updates the TJ. Virtual grafitti, faster processor, more memory. It is all pretty straightforward.

I would definitely buy a Zire 91 with those features even without BlueTooth and/or WiFi because of the Palm name, UIC, and especially the SD slot.

And the Zire 71 is now Palm's oldest living OS5 model. By far.

RE: Whats Palm gonna do
Timothy Rapson @ 1/15/2004 8:33:36 AM #
Oh, and PalmOne has just dropped the price of the Zire 71 to clear out inventory before the new model arrives. This is more of a Sony standard, but it seems everything PalmOne is doing is now a mirror of what we've come to expect from Sony.

RE: Whats Palm gonna do
jbeedham @ 1/16/2004 7:34:01 PM #
Hopefully, we can get some info on the Tungsten E2 soon. I have been thinking of buying a Tungsten E to hold me over since it has mp3 playing capabilities.

Compare Sony vs. Palm feature for feature as long as you want, but never forget how poorly made Palms now are compared to Sonys. Pick them up and you'll immediately know what I'm talking about.

It's just too big.

TH55: Connector?!

mikecane @ 1/17/2004 1:04:47 PM #
Hey, what other models use this bottom connector?

And is there a *Belkin* folding keyboard for that connector?

RE: TH55: Connector?!
abosco @ 1/17/2004 5:43:54 PM #
It uses the standard T-Series connector, different than the very old S/N series connector.

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=200588&pcount=&Product_Id=125845

The other models that use this connector are every single Clie, excluding the S300, S320, S360, N710c, N610c, and N760c.

CLIE TH55 = Oh the Pain!

mikecane @ 1/17/2004 2:29:16 PM #
Well, of course I'd want a freakin ONE GIG MStick for it.

But even on ebay they cost MORE than the rumored $350 of the device!

Do what the rest of us do. Find a merchant that is selling one grossly underpriced (probably stolen), and snatch it.

The application "Data Import" takes care of this. It allows you to use your PDA as a card reader. Speeds are very quick, matching some of the fastest card readers.

MagicGate means you can listen to music in AT3 format, but doesn't restrict you to it. It's an added bonus, not a limitation. AT3 is actually a pretty good format. Too bad it's Sony.

Oh. My. God!

I will finally enter the Promised Land of Data Import! Wherein my CLIE will act as its own r/w device!

So, I will *still* be able to use the old 6-in-1 r/w for the old MStick (as well as my Palm/PPC Test SD).

Sonyboy earns his name again! (You hear that, ska? Don't *you* wish you had such a nifty nickname?)
