They can't sell while the Sky is falling, can they?

Sorry, can't reveal the whole list cause my wife will kill me for not being able to settle on one for very long. Suffice it to say that the list is long, and goes back 14 years.

Palm is fortunate to have such support. Am sure Palm will be what is expected ... a true pioneer with an innovative capable crew.

That's funny.

It's good people still have faith in Palm. Many people are employed by Palm making products longer than most handheld developers. This pioneering spirit has built a strong brand with good support. Those that think/want Palm will fail have their reputation on the line. This makes positive news more challenging at the moment.

It is funny, but it also seems a bit unfair.

The investment in Palm was risky, to be sure, but was it a foolish risk? I assume Elevation Partners has a look at WebOS in the early stages, and who's to second guess their belief that it had an enormous amount of potential?

Palm might go under or sell for a huge loss, but that was hardly a sure thing.

Perhaps Palm will rally. Europe can get Palm this is a big market. Also many of the Palm developers are of European origin (roots). This market understands that quiting is not an option and that thoughtful risk has its rewards.

A Palm Classic would be something to work on that can continue Palms movement into the future without leaving anyone behind. Palm Classic would bring the best of Palm past, present and future together for another device.

Palm has always raised the bar a Palm Classic would continue that tradition.

When one does well they are not the "worst" though freedom of speech encourages people to say what they want. i think Palm has done well and can always do better. People that invest in North America and Palm can do so without the thought of being labeled the "worst" for choosing to invest in Palm and North America.

A rally would be nice to help bring Palm and North America out of the darkness.

Yes; very foolish. Elevation saw a prototype with a touch screen and thought it was the next iphone and sunk millions into Palm.

Without realizing or understanding the factors that made the iphone a success (and the factors that made Palm successful), Elevation partners and Palm were doomed to failure.

I assume Elevation Partners has a look at WebOS in the early stages, and who's to second guess their belief that it had an enormous amount of potential?

Potential is great, but doesn't equal market share or profits - neither of which Palm has.

If Palm's execution was as great as their potential (at the time), they'd have an abundance of profits.

As it stands, their window of opportunity has nearly sealed shut.

Palm might go under or sell for a huge loss, but that was hardly a sure thing.

The only sure thing right now is that Palm will get bought out or get sold for a huge loss.

I disagree. I think EP fundamentally underestimated the smartphone market, and the proof is in this:

"You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009 is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment if the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Think about it - if you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they're going to buy."
-Roger McNamee, March 2009

This company deliberately announced their product prematurely when there was no competing Apple launch and released it half a year later to coincide with the original contract expiration. They did this with the belief that smartphone customers have the attention span of a fruitfly, and they thought the iPhone craze was a flash in the pan.

Certainly raises the bar.

Perhaps Palm will build a Palm Classic?

It would be good for the industry to have more innovative hardware build with the best of Palm past, present and future. Palm's roots run deep.

The stock went up.

An idea to save Palm OS

linds @ 3/29/2010 6:35:25 PM # Q
An idea,

I have been thinking the last while about what I wish would happen with Palm OS. There is no question in my mind that there is a ton of life left in this operating system, however there does need to be a fresh approach taken on how it should be used.

People are in love now with the idea of adding apps to their devices. Palm already has 30,000 or so apps for their plat form. What could possibly bring people back to the ancient Palm OS 5. In a word "Price". Now I don't think Palm is the company to do this as they are way to committed to Web OS but surely surely someone could purchase Palm OS for pennies on the dollar. I can't see how ACCESS would want to continue hanging onto it. The price point I am thinking about is $20 or $30 dollars for a device. I mean if Casio is still selling organziers at that price point surely someone could do it with Palm OS which is so much easier to use not to mention much more versatile. Throw in wifi and a detachable key board and you have got a device that would kick but for $30.

I have been wondering how long Palm developers are going to keep charging for there software. It seems like there would come a time when they would realize the market is going down hill and that at a very minimum prices should start to match the iphone world. The reason I bring up the price of the software is that is seems like this would be the last cog that would need to be added. Actually there is so many free apps out there already for Palm but....just saying.

I guess the reason I write all this is I have been thinking a lot about the IPAD. I think this is definitely going to be a very compelling product. I was also very skeptical at first but the more I think about it the more I can't believe that this won't be another home run for Apple. The only way I can see someone beating them is by bringing out something comparable for 1/10th the price.

You know that a bunch of companies are going to try to compete by using Windows 7 but I am sorry to say windows just won't work as well. Case in point.... I use windows at work, and my MacBook at home. (like everyone else) It isn't that I don't have acess to windows at home, I have both a windows desk top and a Dell lap top at home. It is also not that I am a big OSX lover. I find there to be mainly one reason why I am drawn to my MAC again and again. Quite simply I come over to my Mac, open the lid, and am able to use the browser within ten seconds or less. This compared to windows which either hibernates and takes forever to come back up or sleeps which drains the battery. I just do not understand why Microsoft doesn't understand that when I go to use my computer I want to be using it now, not 30 seconds from now

I really thought the foleo was on to something with the quick boot time, although it did have a lot of other things wrong. But back to my point, The engineering is already there if someone could get access the TX molds, add a keyboard that can be easily detached, and work out the bugs of the Opera mini browser. Then sell the device for $50 or less. Of course it definitely needs to have wifi and it would be great to have the option of a 3G connection. I admit the TX form factor is a bit small but this would be th way to get ones feet on the ground. You could stream videos or music, do email, browse the web, play music, read books, play games, or anything else the already 30,000 apps let you do. I can only imagine that if something like this took off, that all those hackers that did all those amazing things with Palm OS ie..Dimitry Grinberg, Hobbiyst Rob, etc.

Nah, probably wouldn't work.

Like I've said before, Access is still making money licensing GarnetOS (PalmOS). They did a survey to gauge interest. They still have a licensee, Aceeca that are making industrial/rugged PDAs with a custom expansion slot. They introduced a new rugged PDA and also a personal PDA running GarnetOS. The one thing you don't get is your cheap price.

And now for links:

@baalthazaaR

That is very interesting, maybe Aceeca should take up my idea then. I wonder what types of applications people are using with these Aceeca RDA's.

I guess my point is that I love the form factor of the IPAD and would be willing to put up with it's limited functionality if the price was right. I love Palm and it seems like it has basically all the software components already developed sans a good browser. It seems like Access should be willing to license Palm OS for $5 or less if someone could sell a million or two of them. (yea i know, one would be lucky to sell 1,000 of them, only us fan boys would probably bite)

I just can't imagine how many of these $400 devices Aceeca could be selling.
