WiMAX SD Card out Soon!

LiveFaith @ 3/26/2004 2:11:46 PM #
I heard that SanDisk was releasing a SDIO card with WiMAX next month with Palm OS 4,5 & 6 drivers. I'm quittin' my day job.

If it's from SanDisk don't get your hopes up! My confidence in their products and services has taken a big time nosedive in the past year. It's not the first time they've been working on SDIO Wi-fi.

I don't think so.

some things you should know about wimax.
1) testing profiles will not even be done until late 2004.
2) certified interoperable product won't be available until 2005 (perhaps late 2005)
3) there is no deployed wimax infrastructure, though some early non-certified stuff has just started to ship.
4) Low power equipment (like a card) may not make sense just yet because there is no infrastructure and will be none for a while. who, after all, has deployed wimax gear

There are though some cities that are trying to create city wide hot spots with wimax now despite everything above but don't hold your breathe for a wimax card just yet.

Either I am the only one that got it, or I am the only one that didn't get it.

But, wasn't the original post a gag - a joke?

It was a gag. People who got it probably laughed. People who didn't posted about their doubts.

A gag. But, I did hear that both political parties were really serious about balancing the budget and cutting pork spending.

What another SD wireless device from ScamDisk*Cough*SanDisk. I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

Security

With a range like that, I hope they get the security right this time.

If, by "right", you mean totally, unbreakable security then forget it. Nothing is, or ever will be... there are always to many trade-offs which ultimately compromise the security of any system.

Well, to be honest, the majority of us don't have data that is critical to national security or anything like that, so *good*, or *very good/excellent* will do.

I only ask for something not as utterly laughable as WEP is in the current standard... :P

Why?

HiWire @ 3/27/2004 10:10:53 PM #
I understand the techie excitement for this new standard, but shouldn't we aim for better cellular speeds and networks? It seems they have broader, established coverage and competitive pricing structures.

It exactly opposite. A cellchone only has reception as long as there is a tower near by. I don't know the range of cellphone towers, it may be much greater than these, but the WiMax has much greater bandwidth. Basically, with a WiMax tower and a voip cellphone, you have all your phone and internet needs for entire nieghborhoods met by a signle tower.

Cellphone service is slow, and its not in the forseeable futute going to catch up to the 802 family of wireless.
The future is replacing all cellphone coverage with new technology like this that uses much higher speed/bandwidth networks for both voice and data.

I've given it a bit more thought, and here's what I've come up with:

1) WiMax breaks the cellular system, so you don't have to follow the telecom's rules
2) Faster (as stated above)
3) Could be more efficient for peer-to-peer networking or a pico-network (a la Bluetooth).
4) Maybe less power-consumption (?)

WiMAX already deployed in Portland OR

johnbartley @ 3/29/2004 6:02:23 PM #
A WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider), VeriLan
http://www.verilan.com
already has 802.16 systems deployed in the Portland (Oregon) Metro area. The yellow area on the map shows the are covered by the WiMAX system, while the green area shows the lesser area covered by their 802.11b net.

If, indeed, the specson WiMAX are not yet finalized, this probably is an early version of 802.16, but, who cares? It's been my experience that, when you're buying hardware for one specific purpose (wireless net feed), early releases will serve well.
