RE: WiMAX SD Card out Soon!
RE: WiMAX SD Card out Soon!
some things you should know about wimax.
1) testing profiles will not even be done until late 2004.
2) certified interoperable product won't be available until 2005 (perhaps late 2005)
3) there is no deployed wimax infrastructure, though some early non-certified stuff has just started to ship.
4) Low power equipment (like a card) may not make sense just yet because there is no infrastructure and will be none for a while. who, after all, has deployed wimax gear
There are though some cities that are trying to create city wide hot spots with wimax now despite everything above but don't hold your breathe for a wimax card just yet.

But, wasn't the original post a gag - a joke?

RE: Why?
Cellphone service is slow, and its not in the forseeable futute going to catch up to the 802 family of wireless.
The future is replacing all cellphone coverage with new technology like this that uses much higher speed/bandwidth networks for both voice and data.

RE: Why?
1) WiMax breaks the cellular system, so you don't have to follow the telecom's rules
2) Faster (as stated above)
3) Could be more efficient for peer-to-peer networking or a pico-network (a la Bluetooth).
4) Maybe less power-consumption (?)

WiMAX already deployed in Portland OR
http://www.verilan.com
already has 802.16 systems deployed in the Portland (Oregon) Metro area. The yellow area on the map shows the are covered by the WiMAX system, while the green area shows the lesser area covered by their 802.11b net.
If, indeed, the specson WiMAX are not yet finalized, this probably is an early version of 802.16, but, who cares? It's been my experience that, when you're buying hardware for one specific purpose (wireless net feed), early releases will serve well.
