Comments on: Palm Contest Offers a Chance to Celebrate in Las Vegas

The contest details are located on Palm's Facebook page and are further detailed here. To enter participants must complete the last frame of dialogue from a specially Palm commissioned xkcd cartoon that says something clever about the state of mobile communications. The winner gets a free trip out to Vegas to be present at the Palm event where something they won't specifically say... will be unveiled. The event is an invitation only affair for analysts and media.

RE: Bizarre
Viral marketing at its...uh...best?
Strange that they're running TWO contests at the same time, though - left and right hand not talking a-GAIN?
RE: Bizarre
the cartoon is bizarre. implications of a love triangle with a mother? it's not even funny or clever - just contrived to look hip and ironic. i'm sure a liberal cooked this one up too. what's next, bestiality? they already gave us the transgender Santa Claus.

RE: Bizarre
The idiots promoting Palm have been trying to con people into "please try our crappy steak" for so long, they have forgotten the sizzle that has been there all along.
If we must hear advertising, how about a campaign that actually shows the beauty of the OS? The abilities of the device? NASCAR, Santa and Facebook may be trendy, but being "trendy" is the problem with the phone biz: someone always has something thinner and prettier than you. Concentrate on the actul OS, keyboard and abilities and maybe some serious people will begin to understand the reason for a Treo.
Rubes who worship NASCAR, kids on Facebook - will these sales really keep Palm from continuing to choke on their own olive green Centros?

Am I the only one who doubts the something new?
I guess that could be considered NEW and exciting. Ho hum. Bah humbug!

RE: They will annonce Nova!
Does that mean devs can come up with their own fugly and screwball app UIs (hello, Windows!)?
Does it mean we'll see a fast ramp up in apps from devs and college kidz?
Does it mean vulnerability to gross malware?
What about execution speed? Does it all run through an interpreter? Or can apps be compiled?
What's the least CPU horsepower it would need (I say least because I *still* think Palm would go cheap-ass on us, ala the PDA tarted up to be Foleo)?
What about battery life?
Is there any HWR possible with JavaFX?
Would corporations *want* something JavaFX-based?
OK, *now* we can have some real discussion here.
If Gekko STFUs!
RE: They will annonce Nova!
Sheesh.
Anywho, that guy over on jk-something-or-other could put a touchscreen on anything:

RE: They will annonce Nova!
And, geez, hello! What frikkin good is a touchscreen if you're dealing with the same old built-for-mouse-pointer OS underneath it? Go try that touchscreen hp desktop running (god help us all!) Vista. It makes FrankenGarnet seem *good*. This is one of the reasons UMPC failed - not just price - it was XP being underneath it. Even MS recognized what a doofus kludge that was and kept issuing "Origami" custom UIs for it. Hey, look at the new phones that slap a mask on WinMob. Once you leave that pretty face, it's a pig underneath!
PIC just gave me a timeout. So if this gets posted twice, blame Ryan!
It has got to be Nova!
RE: It has got to be Nova!
RE: It has got to be Nova!
I'll believe it when it's in my hand running and syncing Pocket Quicken and a few other apps seamlessly. Ain't believing the hype right now- too many BS claims in Palm's history.

I'm beginning to put together puzzle pieces for blog posts.
I HATE you Palm! You TOO Colligan!
Listen to me, Palm, you bastards. I'll be publishing a CHECKLIST of what this thing must be able to do BEFORE you announce it.
It better do all of them, dammit.
Hey, Rubenstein, watch my blog! I know YOU won't let them put out crap.

JavaFX Mobile versus the iPhone
http://www.pikesoft.com/blog/index.php?itemid=176
>>>The more I think about it, JavaFX Mobile does not make any business sense. When it comes to Linux + Java, Motorola is a lot more likely than Sun to get the mix right. Sorry Sun, I just don't think you can jump into this market just by slapping together a bunch of cool components that get developers jazzed: in the mobile handset market it's the wireless carriers not the developers that are in the driver's seat. If there is one thing I have learned as a mobile software developer it's that you ignore this at your peril.
You know, I'd really love to go, but...
Folks, I hope your announcement is better than your big cool contest.
RE: You know, I'd really love to go, but...
"It's not the 80% to your mother that matters. It's the 20% to your father. He's going to announce he's gay and getting a divorce and moving to San Francisco, where he will vote LIBERAL and instill a heart attack in Gekko and his silly Playskool Centro."
Like I said: unfunny.
RE: You know, I'd really love to go, but...
I have high hopes for Palm's announcement, but having THIS as their contest does not do a lot to instill confidence that they've suddenly learned the art of marketing.
RE: You know, I'd really love to go, but...
OK, throw in a bow as a bonus.

When I see, for instance, this tagline:
Karen C.
Edelman for Palm
That's someone named KAREN C. from the PR FIRM Edelman? Is that correct?
I had a huge roar of laughter that one of Palm's EXECUTIVE EMPLOYEES won't post his surname:
Sony to deliver OLED media player!
http://www.sonyinsider.com/2008/12/12/sonys-first-touchscreen-walkman-revealed/
I repeat: Oh man!!!
RE: Sony to deliver OLED media player!
However, based on the initial specs/pics:
1. Apple had better watch out for this 'un, especially with a few hard buttons, OLED screen. If Sony has the foresight to stick a Memory Stick Pro Duo or Micro M2 card slot in this thing it'll be a huge home run (let's be realistic and not assume they will come to their senses and put some kind of SD slot on this thing)
2. ANYTHING that can come close to, equal or surpass the iPod Touch in specs without being tied into iTunes/DRM is a very, very good thing.
3. This is likely the precursor to the PSP 2 and/or possibly even the poor man's successor to Sony's eReader digital book lineup.
4. FM tuner? Only close to a decade after Apple should've put it in the iPod. 'nuff said!
5. Amazon DRM-free MP3 store integration & full drag & drop mass storage compliance without any iTunes proprietary silliness & DRM? SIGN ME UP!

Maybe we'll see a resurrected VZ90 for the Japanese market with WiMax and Nova.

RE: Sony to deliver OLED media player!
Geez, you don't HAVE to put DRM music on it.
Predictions
Here's my predications:
A) As stated elsewhere, Nova is going to be a "consumer" OS to replace Garnet. Business users will not be the immediate target.
B) The OS will be very tightly integrated with a set of Palm Internet services. I'm thinking HotSync will sync to the cloud rather than to a desktop PC. The whole notion of syncing manually will probably be nuked too, in favour of a seemless background syncing operation. Contacts, To-do, Calendar etc will all be stored remotely. This immediately does away with Windows/Mac/Linux compatibility woes.
C) There will be deep integration with key Internet apps like Facebook, MySpace, MSN and Youtube. These are essential tools for the young'uns of today and if you're targeting that market, you've gotta do it.
D) Multimedia support is critical, so solid native inbuilt apps for movies and music will be there. This must be as easy to use and as robust as an ipod.
E) The Palm UI will be brought up to scratch, with multi-touch support, smooth animation and super sexy graphics with transparency, shadows, the whole shebang.
F) There must be a solid SDK to go with the OS, and assuming that this baby is based on Linux, you'd have to say that Java will be the language used. Whilst C/C++ are no doubt more powerful, IMHO they do not represent the future of RAD app development. C#/Mono whilst possible is unlikely.
G) Numenta (Hawkins' baby) AI algorithms implementation. Extremely unlikely but hey, if they can make your phone (or the phone via the Palm services servers) actually learn from the way you use it, become automatically more intuitive to the user, make recommendations, etc that'd be a world first.
Most of these things are currently represented to some extent in both Android and the iPhone, but it will be the killer execution of these concepts that will make or break Palm this coming year.
RE: Predictions
B) Yup - Palm said they wanted to do services - Coleman is still on their BoD...
C) It isn't clear how one "tightly integrates" something with the "cool site du jour" so I don't think this is likely; as noted, these sites come (and go?) on a daily basis practically).
D) Yes, even for the prosumer.
E) A must-have. Period.
F) It might be Java-based - I'd hope not, though. Too massive a performance hit compared to C. Note - JavaFX Mobile does not exist at this point in time.
G) Giggle. That's all...just "giggle".
But...
Colligan (I think it was him) said they would be introducing the "platform" "incrementally". Since NONE of the platform has been introduced YET, and assuming he hasn't changed that particular tune, I would NOT expect half of the above to show up by end of year (January 8th is not end-of-year). I certainly do not expect to see anything holdable-in-yer-hand anytime soon and, if that "incremental release" is the way of Palm's future, I would NOT expect next year's CES presentation to be as exciting as we all want.
RE: Predictions
Everyone here keeps thinking another frikkin phone.
It won't be.
That will come later. When JavaFX Mobile is available.
For crying out loud, people, they have an entire OS to unveil, not just a *mobile* OS.
No Prediction
Palm has had almost half a year to look at the iPhone 2.x and see all the user and developer complaints about it (no cut-and-paste, no skins, no environmental user settings, no programmable alarms, no fast frame buffer access, & etc.). It will be interesting to see if Palm had either the foresight or the flexibility to answer, and give developers yet another modern platform worth supporting.
