This is clear evidence why Sony withdrew from the handheld market. They were leaderless. And in that vacuum major decision and indecision was made that turned Sony away from the PALM OS plateform and towards the Sony/Ericson partnership while changing the ideas of the little Sony handheld game machine.

We have been debating these issues in many posts in the forums- take a look if you havent seen the discussions.

So without flaming anyone, ranting which sounds negative, or taking any personal shots, I would like to continue the discussions about the future of the Palm OS with this major Sony announcement as the backdrop of progress or decline of the PALM OS.

LEADERSHIP drives SOFTWARE and SOFTWARE DRIVES HARDWARE.

I believe that is an indisputable truth. Nothing new is being developed on the hardware front that has already been released that is going to ignite any new developments this year at least and probably the next few years. The big hardware break through cycles have occurred and the adoption of those benefits are going to continue to present themselves.

Now SOFTWARE is a new and expanding area that has many up and coming promises to fufill. MSFT has Mobile 2005 coming in just a few months and Symbian has 9.0 competing right along with the missing in action Cobalt 14 months in the released making.

The software is what drives these new hardware developments. Do you all remember the San Disk WiFi card for the Palm OS? The card existed but the drives were missing unable to be written and Palm started to lose its footing. While at the time it was just a little crack in the wall it has now become a major handicap.

And that is the reason why LEADERSHIP drives the software which drives the hardware which provides the benefit to adopting the product.

Just as Sony has lost its footing in consumer electronics for whatever reason- cost, propriator, lack of compatiblility, aggressive development schedule, etc. Where Sony really lost it was in the companies leadership that drives their business.

So what does this have to do with PalmInfoCenter your Palm information source?

Palm One but more importantly Palm Source has lost it leadership and that is what is leading to our, the Palm USERS, problems.

Palm One has dropped the ball on wifi. That is correctable. For the most part Palm One has done a excellent job since the split and it is regretable to see the man responsible the last CEO, leave and be replaced by Ed Colligan the new CEO especially with such dubious reasons for leaving such as to pursue other projects and be with my family more or whatever the excuse was without moving into a new job right away. But hopefully Ed Colligan will take the Palm One plateform towards wifi and overcome Sprints and other wireless telcoms adversion to the disruptive technology, WIFI. I personally would deploy a new must have device with T-Mobile, sell a gillion of them with T-Mobile and wise up Sprint with an impressive number of units sold and simple ask them why they do not want a piece of it. But I also would have done that last year but it not to late.

But now here is the problem with the Palm OS. Palm One does not drive it as they have rumored they are going to pursue other OS, whatever that means.

PalmSource drives the Palm communities future. Other hardware manufactures can be found but the Palm economy lives or dies with PSRC.

So now we have PSRC who has had questionable leadership from the beginning of the split but which wasn't trutly revealed since this past year. During this last year the users, licensees, investors, employees, and the future of ease of usability have been lead off a cliff. And that man that has gotten us to this point is Nagel.

Remember Leadership drives software and software drives hardware which makes adoptable devices.

So now we have all witness 2004 mobile developments with Nagel at the helm. And I personally am less than impressed. We have seen a 60% loss in the IPO share value, the second biggest licensee-SONY drop the plateform, the misrelease of Cobalt to an abirtary self imposed deadline which lead to an use deployable product from the licensees point of views, the continual promise of Cobalt products only to be yet again disappointed time and time again by the mismanagment of the deployment, the continued unprofitability of the company, the inability to secure major licensees in relation to MSFT and Symbian, the lose of Garnet surfacing on any new smartphones other than the TREO, the signing of licenses so small that products are not produced, and the purchasing of a Chinese company who while with great potential and diversity of product has added additional expense to the PSRC financials without creating any new interest and capital influx.

Those were the cons and the pros are PSRC is further developing an expanded line of plateforms from the simplest feature phone to the most complex laptop replacement running Linux.

But the problem with the Pros is the development of the products in the face of today. The CMS development was a good long term project and will yield benefit if it can be realized. And that is the problem- IF IT CAN BE REALIZED? It is big question that will remain unanswered until it happens or it does not.

But what is happening today is the crappy MSFT Mobile 2003SE along with Symbian 7.0 is taking the market share in the smartphone arena faster than PSRC can compete. That is why PSRC has retreated to this feature phone talk because PSRC knows and understands this.

Garnet is not a bad OS. Look at all the great things that it has done since its deployment. But Cobalt is a great OS that has had realistically since Sept. 2004 but since Jan. 2004 for licensees to deploy in newly released and upcoming lines. Instead, licensees have adopted MSFT and Symbian. I have travelled the world in the last year from Europe to Asia and seen it for myself.

I have seen dozens of new phone personally that are incredible devices not available in the US that are running the wrong OS for me. I have read about dozens of new phones that are running the wrong OS. 35 in total! That is a huge number of new devices that are selling without PSRC being a part of it.

The point of PSRC spliting was not stock options and bonuses for those that did it. It was to get Garnet and Cobalt onto these new devices I have been seeing running the wrong OS.

And that is why I am discouraged with NAGELS abilities. Nagel failed at Apple. He admitted it and anyone can read about it here on PalmInfoCenter. I will get you the link in another post.

Nagel has also failed in my humble opinion at PSRC. He was suppose to have all this telephone inside connections and have lead this type of development before and was suppose to have this majic combination of phone and computer experience that was going to lead PSRC into this new smartphone arena away from the dieing unconnected PDA decline.

Well here we are a year and a huge lose later by all measures and we are headed towards what- the next development cycle that has no assurance of being any better than this past one.

Why would we want to follow that?

And for those of you who say that the leader can not control all the issues I have broached I just have to say that if the captain can not do it than nobody can because he can fire anyone he wants, promote anyone he wants, keep the course or change it as needed, and sail to clear towards clearer skys. Sony know this and PSRC is learning it the hard way.
