Releasing wifi drivers for an entry level model not only shows good support, it also shows good manners ;) .

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p

I agree that it is a good thing that the drivers are available. However, I think it's more of a poor showing on PalmOne's part that they were not ready at the time the E2 was launched. I would also argue that the FAILURE to prpovide supported drivers for other Tungsten handhelds is a bad thing. Users of the T and T2 could certainly benefit from the use of the WiFi card if drivers were made available for those handhelds. PalmOne has a history of not supporting customers of older handhelds, and the release of the drivers for the E2 is simply another case of providing belated support for current models.

Never underestimate someone here to complain about a product release. I bet if the WiFi drivers were released with the E2 launch, someone here would have complained that there should have been a public beta for their pet features (i.e. WEP) to be in the driver.

Mikvo is right. A well executed launch would have had drivers available immediately. At least they did it better than the T5.

If that's a good thing, then PalmOne is doing a better thing:

The TT5 is only $350 after mail-in rebate with a FREE WiFi SDIO card. Costs less than the TE2 + card, has 50% larger screen, 256MB flash RAM. Slightly longer and screen quality good, but a little less spectacular than the new TE2.

In other words, no. Carriers want to make more money off expensive data plans, so anything that reduces the user's dependancy on their networks is a non-starter.

That's why i don't bother with any wireless plans for my cellphone. I'm grateful that I don't need mobile info on the road and can wait till I get home to my PC. $20 to $30 extra a month saved right there.

Yes - I agree. Cellular Carriers charge stupid premiums for their data services - ESPECIALLY here in rip-off Britain! Think $50-$70 for anything worth having.

And yes - the Treo650 has only just finally made it to market here in the past few days. Not sure why there has been such a delay, as normal PDAs launch here at same time as in the US.

Hell, $20 a month for unlimited mobile data is almost reasonable. It's the $50 charged by Cingular and Verizon to smartphone users for the same service the standard phones get for $15-$20 that's outrageous.

The >extra< $20 to $30 a month is ON TOP of the standard phone plan, so we're talking about $40 to $50 / mo for say 600 to 1000 miniutes PLUS $20 to $30 / mo for unlimited data (email, picture mailing, browsing, txt msging, etc.) which really makes it $60 to $80 a month. Carriers may have promos, like IIRC, Verizon has a deal where u get unlimited for $5 extra a month. Don't think that's very permanant, so it'll only take into effect for a few months.

The fee for a decent data plan is almost as crazy as what they charge per KB for those without a big plan. My son's first bill was a shocker. He was told that instant messaging just used minutes by a friend who had a diferent carrier, and that internet on the weekend was free. NOT! $177 for data services on a $39 plan. He immediately diabled internet on his phone when he found out.

Forcing OTA (over the air) charges is something else as well, a lot of phones have no BT, no IR, and they charge $40 for the data cable and software. The only option for getting wallpapers and ringtones is OTA, so you get bitten even if they are free, by being charged for the download! Nice.

Unfortunately, shadowmite's patch was unstable. Haven't checked recently to see if he was ever able to fix the problems, though.

Also, last I heard, to use Shadowmite's drivers on the Sprint 650, you had to do a hard reset before you could go back to using Sprint's network for internet. Shadowmite's done a tremendous job with the whole thing, but it's not a replacement for manufacturer-supported drivers.

Wireless carriers are idiots.

Case in point: I used T-Mobile to Go SIM card and got a gigabyte of data transfer over 6 months for $30 before they cut off the service.

Cutting off wifi doesn't make sense for carriers. Most people will opt for the unlimited plans so as to avoid extra (and for ATT/Cingular, incredibly overpriced) data charges. The carriers get their monthly fee no matter how much you use, so it's in their best interest to make you use less. Having wifi would mean that for big (and therefore expensive) transfers, you would opt for the higher speed connection and only use the cellular modem for small (and thus cheap) connections such as email or light surfing.
