Comments on: DeluxeWare Releases A New Weather App

Weather FreewareDeluxeWare have released a new Weather application for Palm OS devices. While the Palm OS certainly has no shortage of weather apps, DeluxeWare has added some unique features and has released this first beta version as freeware. In addition to the usual weather data, the program supports a broad range of Palm OS devices and offers high-res+ support. It also has a "Weather Guard" feature that can add the current conditions to your Treo's keyguard display.

Weather v0.12 is a beta release and support Palm OS 5 and higher devices. It is freeware and requires an Internet connection.

Beta

PacManFoo @ 2/15/2008 4:21:27 PM # Q
I just happened to stumble upon this myself last night and tried it out. It's a bit awkward yet and it has a big footprint at over 900kb. I tried it on both a Palm TX and a Sony Clie UX50 and used full screen on both. From what I could gather it appeared to only give current conditions, no forecast information. The graphics are nice and it had no trouble finding the two zip codes I wanted. Switching between the two zip codes however was not very user friendly. Definitely a beta application at this point.

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm TX (Number 2)
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T, TX
Handspring - Edge, Platinum, Deluxe
Sony - SJ22
Casio-EM500
Apple - MP110, MP2000, MP2100

Very nice program, but way to memory intense for just the temperature. Have to agree that it does have a nice background and since it will run from the card on my TX I will probably leave it there for now.

Have noticed that when it shows the last time updated it is correct at CST but accross the top it shows the time in eastern time zone ie: one hour later for me.

Pacman,

You took the review precisely outta my mouth. Why would today's weather be the only thing displayed. Maybe in the great canyons of NYC etc, one would have do go down 67 floors to go outside. But for the rest of us, I can just open the back door and take a look / feel. That's real time (as compared to a laggy EDGE Treo) and pretty accurate too.

My 680 strangely reset again and a question @ configuring "Weather extensions" popped up with a decision box, in the middle of the Palm OS logo!!! After selecting yes, it never finished rebooting. Tried again same thing ... visions (fears) of a hard reset began to dance in my head. Pulled the battery once more and selected "no". It finished rebooting. I immediately deleted the app. Saga over.

It's a little windy and partially sunny today here in GA, with temps in the 50s, no rain in sight. I just walked to the door to find out. :-)

More like alpha....

Makes no sense (yet). Takes up nearly a gig of RAM and gives you less information than you can get by going online via Blazer through the 3 weather links on the Palm Mobile home page. Plus, it takes just about as long to 'sync' it as it would to get the same info through Blazer.

Finally, (1) no radar; and (2) no forecast.

It sure is purdy though.

Maybe the next version will have some more bells and whistles, but this one's off my Treo 755p.

Yes, it is purdy. But is does run timed background updates at your discretion to have the info ready at a laggy NVFS Treo push of a button. I love the "web 2.0" apps like Google Maps and Tryda. This one just doesn't offer enough useful info. And since it caused (apparently) some strange reset issues on my 680, it is the "weakest link" & gone. Still Beta.

Look out the window.

Nice to look at, but faster to go outside or look out the window and get the same information. If 5 day forcast (the Wii has it) get added or something then it's a great ap.

A little Buggy

I kinda like it, at least the part which is married to the keyguard. The problem is the keyguard is interfering with some display updates and more importantly, my alarms. The alarm wakes up my TREO, but it does not sound, then the keyguard times out and the phone goes back to sleep.

Not a good combination when that alarm is supposed to wake you for work :-(
