Comments on: Verizon Treo 755p Reportedly Now Available

Verizon Wireless users who have been waiting impatiently since May for the Treo 755p to show up on their network of choice can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Reports are trickling into PIC as well as online forums from customers who have already been able to order a Verizon 755p through Verizon's B2B telesales channels. Other reports go on to claim that a December 17th or 18th B2B release date is in the cards. Unconfirmed reports indicate widespread VZW retail store available is not expected until January 8th, however.

Many recent reports from Verizon Wireless corporate employees were suggesting a November 28th launch date but then some corporate store staff reported that the device had failed testing and was being "sent back" for further tests. Just last week Palm issued a warning regarding a forthcoming Q2 loss to be reported. Their earnings for the quarter were adversely affected by a carrier-delayed device, widely acknowledged to be the Verizon 755p.

Too Late

I've been a loyal fan of Palm for some time. However, how can we be excited of a phone that was released ages ago on another carrier and probably won't be much different from a 700p or rather a 650. I hate to see Palm suffer like this, but once the loyal core group of supporters leave Palm, who else will remain.

You don't think the delays might have been due to their desire to ship it with perfected firmware after all the crap they went through with the 700P firmware? The next step would be to offer a cheap upgrade for 700P owners. And they could lower their data plan to $15/mo. And lastly, I expect them to release EVDO around here. Other than these nits, they are perfect! I don't ask for much! Ha!

I just called the regular VZW number, (800) 922-0204. She told me I couldn't order it at the time, but there are folks over on HoFo who did manage to order it and even received it last week.

However, as of today it's available online, so the point may be moot.

$50 rebate

jsb @ 12/14/2007 9:23:08 AM # Q
I called telesales about this yesterday, and was told there's a $50 mail-in rebate in the box. And there's also the $100 advanced device discount. So through telesales (and presumably online, once it's available there), the two-year contract price is $300 after those rebates.

Were you able to order the 755P from telesales? Or did they say the same thing about soon to be available, if so what # did you call?

Hmm... putting all the Palm sucks, and this is a 3 year old OS, no wifi, yada yada comments aside (for now) lets see what we have.

Verizon 755p for $449 w/2yr

Sprint Centtro for $99 w/2yr

Centro is slimmer, shorter, thinner and has the exact same feature set. Sprint has far cheaper data as well.

Gee, this is really going to sell well isn't it.

Well, in all fairness, the Centro also had a horrid keyboard and a tiny screen (yes it's bright & sharp but it's still TINY!). Not to mention the Centro's weak battery.

Now, underhood, the Centro is a far superior device to the 755p---less lag, superior camera quality, OS tweaks, newer/better PIM apps & bundled software, etc etc.

A shame Palm didn't work the Centro magic first on the 755p. Well, there's still a glimmer of hope (HAH!) that a 775p is forthcoming later in '08 with all of the above touches + Google Maps Location finder enabled + a few gigs of internal flash storage...

Forget the Centro, for a more apples to apples comparison try:

Sprint 755p:
$349.99: w/ 2yr contract
$249.99: w/ current web special

VerizonWireless 755p:
$449.99: w/ 2yer contract
$299.99: w/ discounts and rebates mentioned above.

However:
* What does one have to do to get the VerizonWireless rebate? Probably commit the their '"Unlimited" Broadband service' at about $50 extra per month.
* What does one have to do to get the Sprint special? Probably nothing, other than ordering from the web.
* How much are VerizonWireless's Data Plans?
* How much are Sprint's Data Plans?

Don't forget that there is a substantial difference between networks.

In some areas Sprint has the better penetration, in others Verizon does. If you don't have a reliable network, who cares what the darn phone costs?

In my particular geographical location, Sprint is not a viable option.

Unlimited Verizon is $45/mo, Sprint is $15, most others $20-$30. Around this part of the country Verizon is dominant, so we burn fewer minutes talking to each other with Verizon. Also, Verizon has better coverage and until recently Sprint did not include analog roaming so they WERE useless off the interstate. Verizon customer service is better, though I hear Sprint has improved. AT&T is not here at all. I just can't fathom how Verizon gets away with charging three times as much as Sprint for the data plan - might have to switch back...

Why Bother??

I left Palm 3 weeks ago afraid I was making a mistake when I purchased my BB Pearl. Best thing I could of done. It kills my treo, which is now gone thatnk you ebay! Browsing on the BB is ridiculous. Its got a mouse, fast as heck (like slow DSL). You dont need third party software for your email, works like a charm. The best thing is I dont feel like I have a brick in my pocket. Dont have to pull out a friggin stylus everytime I use my bb. All I can say is Palm is behind and now they announce their revamped 700p- give me a break. Take all the maony Palm you've taken from us and put something new out! I had been waiting and waiting for the 755p, and Im glad my friend talkid me into the Pearl, because the wait would not had been worth it.

Oh reagarding the Unlimited data plans- its only $29 a month vs $45 with blackberry. Something to do with having to have a data plan with a BB and not having to with other smartphone devices. Ive confirmed this. IT IS NOT A LIMITED PLAN. Some VZW reps aren't aware unitll they research it.
