Comments on: BackupBuddy 2 Released for Mac OS X

Blue Nomad today released a Mac OS X edition of BackupBuddy 2 for Palm OS Powered handhelds and smartphones. BackupBuddy 2 uses a unique process for maintaining a complete history of any given device's files and settings so that users can restore individual files or their entire device to any previous point in time with the simple click of a button, a process called ZoomBack.

Anyone tried this? How does this compare to BackupMan? (By tried I mean restored a blank palm with it).

Another backup program I tried reported that it was working fine and that daily backups had been done for a week. When I had to hard reset and tried to restore all the backup files were blank (but big). That sucked...

I don't take chances with my data. BackupMan seems to be the best backup app around and and for YEARS has flawlessly restored all of my devices every time I've needed it. Why Palm or PalmSource hasn't licensed/bought out BackupMan is truly hard to comprehend.

I agree, it wasn't BackupMan i had an unfortunate experience with.

I bought the full license for the old version back in early 2002. I got it knowing that it wouldn't work with OS X than I had at the time but was told by them that an update would be coming soon (I bought the full version since I needed VFS anyway). Over three years later, the update arrives. Not sure about this. Have never heard of BackupMan, will have to look into that. Thanks.

BackupBuddy and BackupMan (and BackupBuddyVFS) work quite differently. I use both BackupBuddy (first ver for Windows) and BackupMan.

BackupMan has worked flawlessly for creating backups to my SD card and for restoring from my SD card. Since Blue Nomad gave me BackupBuddyVFS, I did use it for a short time. It also is for backing up to your memory card. But I had a restore failure with it, so I prefer BackupMan. YMMV. Since I travel often and am away from my PC, I really need a backup system to the memory card.

However, this program, BackupBuddy, works with a different concept. It creates backups on your PC, and has added functionality (for example the ZoomBack function). So it is a different kind of backup system. Comparing BackupBuddy and BackupMan is a little like comparing apples and oranges. Comparing BackupBuddyVFS and BackupMan is a much more similar comparison.

I'm still waiting for the mythical "color HandEra."

My guess is that Palm's content into thinking Hotsyncing is enough (like many of their other things that really aren't). After all, if palm PDAs were more travel friendly, we would've had user replaceable, rechargeable batteries long ago
