Comments on: Verizon Treo 700p Update Available In Some Locations

Over a year after the phone's launch, the long-awaited ROM Maintenance Release for the Verizon version of the Treo 700p is finally being rolled out to certain Verizon Wireless corporate stores. In an odd twist deviating from Palm's usual support practices, Verizon has sent the 700p 1.10 ROM out on SD cards to select corporate stores for Verizon service technician use only. At this point in time, no user-installable version of this update is available nor has a download been leaked.

Word first leaked out of this strange rollout of this update last week on this TreoCentral forums thread. Then, earlier this week, on July 4th, the editor of the Go Button blog posted his findings and a screenshot. The TreoCentral discussion continued on in this thread before finally being confirmed here. Based on the initial reports so far, the update process seems mostly successful and the majority of the 700p's bugs have been cured. No word as of yet if the Verizon-specific SMS lag bug has been resolved as well.

this is yet another area Palm just cant get right... They have the ROM ready and cant get a windows installer to work properly without issues large enough to stop release, or more often than not it seems, release it and pull it from the web after too many people have issues... sad really.

I commend Verizon for doing it this way rather than waiting for Palm to get it stable LOL.

Well, I initially thought it might be a good idea to do it "the ol' fashioned way" but then after checking with several VZW corporate stores in the area, NONE of them have the 700p in stock anymore.

So it's theoretically possible to walk into a VZW corporate store with a laggy, buggy but functional 700p and walk out with a brick and have to wait a day or two for Verizon to FedEx you a replacement unit.

Still, I'm stunned that the update ever even appeared for Verizon...but this STILL is not an officially announced, supported, or otherwise endoresed update. So until it's enjoying wide-spread availability coast to coast, it's still a pretty lame resolution. If Verizon REALLY wanted to earn some brownie points, they'd offer all existing 700p owners, regardless of contract status, a 755p at a substantially discounted price. Of course, we'll probably see a CDMA iPhone sooner than we'd ever see a trade-up program like that from Palm and/or Verizon...

After reading the many different articals on this mess, I called Verizon today, and insisted on a new phone with the latest update. Guess what, they are there! the version:(1.10) for the 700P, new, not rebuilt. so they are now sending a new one.

Works Perfectly

I called a nearby corporate store, and they had the SD update card, which they were using to update all new 700p's in stock. They very kindly agreed to apply the update to my phone. I carefully backed it up and did a hard reset just before going in, and everything worked perfectly. I could immediately tell an improvement. It natively reads my 8GB SDHC card, no long pauses, and the SD card does not seem to come uncoupled nearly as often as it used to.
I am very happy. I strongly recommend doing a hard reset before applying the update, just for safety sake.

It's called a beta rollout.

Developers and support types actually do this sort of thing quite frequently.

Just got mine updated

Went to the Verizon store in the Burlington Mall (outside Boston MA). The tech knew exactly what I was talking about, said it would take 45 minutes and do a hard reset and wipe out my data. He also took the phone number in case he bricked it and needed to get me replacement hardware.

Unfortunately for me, the hardware upgrade did not brick my Treo and I got it back as good as I dropped it off :)

Had to do the *228 call to reprogram the phone, and blazer seems to start a lot quicker. Haven't spent a lot of time testing other features.

The other thing the Verizon tech said was that Palm had a non-data-destructive update on their site that could be downloaded. He didn't have any other information, but I don't see a Verizon download at Palm's support site.

If you go to:

http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/treo700pupdate/index.html

it says "coming soon" near the bottom of the page for Verizon.

That 700p update page has been that way for quite a while.

I really think if this is available at all, they should post it. The nearest company stor to me is over a hundred miles away. I can't just take mine in and get it updated....

Come on Palm and Verizon!
