Comments on: Opera Mini Version 4.0 Released

Opera MiniOpera Software has released the first non beta version of Opera Mini v4. Opera Mini 4 is a complete redesign of its browser with a new desktop overview mode that allows people to browse their favorite web sites, just like they would on a PC. Some of the features added in new version include landscape mode for viewing sites in a widescreen format on compatible devices, a virtual mouse mode for easier scrolling and enhanced small screen rendering. A full list of new additions can be found here. It also retains its classic features of a desktop like presentation with smooth scrolling and zooming and its file size reducing page compression for faster page loads.

Opera Mini for Palm OS requires you have the Palm Java Micro Environment installed. It is available as an over the air download at www.operamini.com.

Truly excellent

Vast improvement over the beta versions (but then, it'd want to be, wouldn't it?) Been fiddling all morning and it hasn't crashed once.

Tim, how about you do all the dirty work for us? Use it for some time and do a write up, particularly vs. Blazer. The last time I used it, I didn't like the results at all. I'm curious if it has really gotten a lot better (but too lazy to try it out at the moment).

Perhaps next week... I have a big-ass Treo 500v review to finish. (In summary: it's alright, but where's the Palm? Anyone could have made this!)

I just downloaded it on to my T|X.

Dam it my RSS feeds are all gone!
At least my bookmarks survived.
there's a speed dial in the bookmarks nice for Treo owners or anyone else with a keyboard.
I just tried the new desktop view and scrolled around for about 20sec before the thing reset.
I'll try PIC this time.....OK it's not loading.....I hit stop and nothing has happened.....Tried stop again still nothing......This would be alot easier if my cat would stop steping on the '.' key ;).
Still nothing time to reset.
I'll try the mobile view this time it shouldn't need as much ram.
Rebooted loaded OM switched to mobile view click OK hit 'bookmarks'....... and nothing ..... I'll get back to you guys.

T|X = Dumbphone companion
If you think a Foleo will sell and a PDA wont you're out of your mind.

Works good for me, no reset issues, but this big-ass font sucks

I posted a question on the Opera-Mini forums about the "big-ass-font-only" option, and they responded with, "Our custom font doesn't work with the IBM JVM". I'm sure that's true, but I did some research, and found information on how you can load just about any font you want into the IBM JVM (programmatically), so I'm a little confused...

Long story short, it's works pretty good on my TX, but looks-wise, it's much better on Samsung A900 (much higher information density with the smaller font, and the "zoomed-out" view looks better as well). With a 260K footprint it's a must as it will render a lot of pages that Blazer craps out on.

Tungsten T --> Palm TX --> Foleo-mini??(like an LD-II with a small attached keyboard??)

How you can load any font you want into the IBM JVM? Do you have any link?
Thanks.

I use FontSmoother with Opera Mini, and it works like a charm. I use the 15pt Charter 15 aa ker, and it's about as small as it gets and still be readable.

My Results so far

Drezin @ 11/8/2007 12:47:23 PM # Q
Well I installed it last night and here are the results thus far on My Palm TX.

1) Make sure you install IBM JVM on your palm first.. Not doing so will result in soft reset when you run Opera... Had that dumb moment last night.

2)once things installed in the right order it loaded up fine... I did not have any book marks or RSS feeds come over.

3) Seems to load pages slower then Blazer, but looks way better. Looks so much better that I even downloaded Version 3 for my Sony Erricson Phone.

4) Tried loading PIC and a couple other sites, even one with heavy Pictures and text. Loaded them slowly and sometimes got an out of memory error. Thats ok though cause it really was a torture test.

5)Tried both Mobile view and regular view... The regular view seemed "Gimmicky" on my palm, like they were trying to copy the Iphone which is not all that bad, but was never impressed with the Iphone way anyways. Mobile View rendered pages Very well.

Gripes...
- have to hit the exit command when the home application button is pressed. Would rather have it work like Blazer where it just switches to the launcher.
- No way to get to the back button without using the stylus or your finger. Every other link you can get to but cannot hit back.
-No way to Clear Cashe *that I found yet*. Usually in Blazer if I get a out of memory error I can just clear the cache and keep going. I have not seen any way to do that in Opera. You can clear the cookies but not the cache

Thats about it ... All in all I figure it this way .. Blazer is like a cheap economy car.. it will get you to where you want to go with the least amount of hassles, but you may be tired and sore when you get there.

Opera is like the Luxury car.. it will get you there and it may give you some problems but you will like the whole experience much better when it works.

just my 2 Cents.. your mileage may vary...

Try increasing the VM size ...
* Launch 'Prefs'
* Select 'IBM Java VM'
* In the pull down on the top, select 'Opera Mini'.
* Clear the check box labeled 'Use global preferences'
* Change 'Set Memory Maximum' to something bigger (up to 32M)
* change 'Set Maximum java Thread Stack Size' to something bigger (up to 32K).

Well tried that and when I changed it to anything else for both the Stack and the Max memory, it worked but only when I have the dynamic input area open. The second I try and close it, it gives me some wierd error...Title : Throwable and then says Unable to... and then it is cut off. That shows up in a little window and the rest of the screen is white.

Strange....

I played with opera mini on my TX last night and it worked well apart from 1 crash when it tried to open a picture heavy page...

Tried the suggestion about changing the VM size and I get the same cut off error message as Drezin. "Throwable" and "Unable to"

I have only had a TX for a short time, but it is noticeable slower than my T3. (unfortunately my T3 died on me). I think the TX is a great machine, but just wish palm had not stripped out so much. If only they had kept the same processor as the T3, an LED would have been useful and the speaker on the back is just plain silly.

Otherwise I have been pleased with the Side/upgrade. Earlier there was a comment about someting called fontsmoother that would make smaller fonts.. anyone have a link to that? Does it work with Opera mini?
