Comments on: Palm Pre Clone Spotted Overseas

Palm Pre Clone China You haven't truly arrived until you've been shanzai'd. This interesting set of pics of a Chinese Palm Pre clone comes to us from shanzhaiji.cn via engadget.

This franken Palm/Apple hybrid knockoff of sorts is said to be similar to the Pre's physical dimensions and sports a nearly identical slide out qwerty keyboard. In addition to being an unlocked GSM device, this one even packs in a touchscreen OS (said to be the linux based oPhone OS), analog TV receiver and a FM radio for good measure. Of course for the later two functions, this unit is equipped with a large telescopic antenna for maximum reception. Look for it now on the streets in China for around 600 yuan or $88 US.

not a clone

That's pretty normal in China. Most cell phones are nice and cheap. People change cell phones very often. They are happy to spend a lot of money in cell phones.

Just to be fair, this phone does not really look like Palm pre. I saw this form factor or similar phones a few years before palm pre was released. They took advantage of Palm pre for ad purpose, but it is not palm pre clone.

Yup!... You're right it is not a palm pre clone, they did try to clone the keyboard but it doesn't look like a pre.

Would not be surprised if this was a Pre concept and someone ran with it after Palm went with another design.

Pffft. Not everyone wants a virtual keyboard... or an Apple logo for that matter.
NOT CDMA iPhones

These aren't CDMA iPhones being released on Bell / Telus - they are the same phones that Rogers has. Bell and Telus are launching their own HSDPA networks (i.e the same 3G technology that Rogers, AT&T - and increasingly - much of the planet uses). Note that there will be no EDGE / GPRS fallback for their networks, thus you wont be able to use any legacy GSM phones (AKA no Blackberry Curvy, 1st gen iPhone, etc).

I'll be watching on Ebay

My kids love their i-clones. One of their favorites is the KA08 mini iclone.

I'll be watching ebay to snag one of these just to play with. Maybe a Palm emulator can be put onto it.
