Comments on: Free Google Syncing on Palm OS Comes and Goes

GSyncFile under "comings". Google's Exchange ActiveSync option now works with all Palm OS smartphones that provide EAS support: the Treos 680, 700p, 755p and the Centro. If you haven't tried this before and are looking to get some webOS-style Synergy happening on your Palm OS device, setting up is simplicity itself. We've posted instructions after the break. Two caveats: email attachments don't download (but Google are working on it). More annoyingly, though, is that Google Calendar sync will wipe out any custom categories you might have set up for events on your Palm OS calendar. Boo!

File under "goings": GooSync, the third-party Palm OS Google syncing service, have announced that they are discontinuing the Free version of their software as of Monday, 19th October 2009. Although the free edition only synced calendars, it must still be a sad day for users. But hey - who needs it now? (If you're answering with a plaintive "me!", you can upgrade to the Premium version for a minimum of $19.95 annually.)

All or Nothing?

Gekko @ 10/10/2009 10:25:57 AM # Q
>Once it's done, you can pick-and-choose which items you want to be push-synced via the Options --> Preferences --> Auto Sync menu.

i thought Versamail EAS is an "all or nothing" affair. ie, you have to sync everything (mail, contacts, calendar) or nothing. no choice. it will not let you uncheck the boxes.

If you have it set to autosync - yes you have to sync the lot.
If you set it to sync at specific increments (say every hour) you can select which items (cal/mail/addr) you want to sync, what days and times.

edit -> by 'autosync' I mean selecting 'As Items Arrive' from the drop down menu in Autosync (presumably push email mode)

push email is the whole point.

one other thing - the gibberish -

*PLMO*8=AAAAAAAA

seems to show up under "custom" field in some contacts on the Gmail side after a sync - not on the device. my guess is that this is some Palm legacy code that somehow get transferred over from the device. not a big deal, just an fyi.

I just noticed that. Seems to show up if you've put in a company name too. Weird, but doesn't hurt anything.

yes.. Me! Goosynch - me!!!

Now what to do (here in the UK) - go premium Goosynch - for my TX - or bite the bullet and go for a new Android device earlier than planned.

Writing off a Palm device as they appear to have written me off some time ago :-(

Palm is a new company. If you like webOS and they make a device you'll be happy with, by all means, buy it. But there is no connection to the Palm of old.

I feel some "nostalgia" because of the Palm devices I loved, but that's it. This new Palm doesn't make a product I want and doesn't operate in a way that attracts me. The decision for me to go with Android has become very obvious over these last months.

Since you are in the UK, I'd think the options are pretty good if you are looking at Android. Along with the HTC stuff, you've even got access to the TMO Pulse (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/10/09/t-mobile-pulse-review/). But waiting a few more months will probably double or even triple your options.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

Hi twrock,

Yes - looks like you and I are in a similar situation/share similar opinions.

Re UK Android scene:
Agreed... the HTC Hero seems like "very nearly" the right phone.. but unfortunately it seems a little bit underpowered/resourced (CPU/RAM) to be "the thing!".
So yes I am still hanging on a bit longer.... (sleep 30 days; wake-and-check Android phones; sleep 30 days....)

Of course I do realise that all the phone comps and mobile providers are just waiting for me to get impatient and order a Hero so that they can all roll out there very latest & greatest new fully-spec'd Android models the very next day!
I'm too old and wise to fall for that old trick.... (sleep 30 days; wake-and-check Android phones; sleep 30 days....)

We'll see who blinks first!!!

;-)

Steve, maybe you'll blink at this one: http://tinyurl.com/yln46rm
Not enough information to decide at this point, but 800x480 WVGA resolution would seem to me to imply it's going to have a big screen. And having that big screen is awfully high on my list of priorities. And if the rest of the Engadget rumor is true, 1GHz or higher Snapdragon processor might just be fast enough for you.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

Can you do this with 1.04 ROW

justauser @ 10/10/2009 3:58:48 PM # Q
Do I have to upgrade my ROM to make this work?

Install the 680 support with that link, justauser.

Can't answer the ROM question, 'cause I'm using a custom 1.04 on my 680 that stripped Versamail out. let us know how you go...

Funny. I actually have an exchange server available. Never played with Versamail sync options - never realised that Versamail upgrade actually enabled calendar / contacts sync. Works surprisingly well. Sorry goosync, I think I'll just see what I can do with my current setup for now. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Tim

Gekko be da man deservin' the cred here.

I wonder how long this has been available?

Spoke too soon. Tried to set it to sync only last 2 weeks of appointments from calendar. Seems to do that but then delete all earlier records off the pda (except repeat events).

Not sure I want all my legacy calendar data on exchange server - but then again, I don't want to delete from pda... hmmm... But contacts sync is neat.

BTW - thanks Resco Backup

Ur data: we eated it!!!

mikecane @ 10/10/2009 6:08:52 PM # Q
Sidekick users seem to have had all their backup data gobbled by Microsoft/Danger server FAIL.

So, what shape are those Palm backup servers in then, eh? Eh?

Bueller? Bueller?

It's a sobering thought but the Pre's data resides on the phone and is only backed up to the servers. If Palm's backup server goes belly up someday, the Pre's data is safe unless by sheer coincidence you choose that exact same moment to erase all your phone's data. Having said that, I kind of squirmed when the App Catalog told me that my credit card information will reside on Palm's servers and not on my phone. I mean, yikes! Once you get a couple of million webOS phones in the wild, Palm's servers are going to be an awfully tempting target for hackers.

Out of interest, I pinged Palm to query what kind of backup / security policies they have in place for Palm Profiles. No idea if they'll share or not (although the cyncial side of me leans towards "not").

Failing that, it really would be nice if Palm had a simple backup application for backing up to your PC in addition to the cloud. (I'm not talking something like Palm Desktop, rather just a simple repository of your data.)

Ohhhhhhh boy. In a couple of days (hopefully sooner), there'll be an interesting story to tell there...

remember that with the Pre, if you ever lose your EAS Exchange Account (leave your job) you can't get your PIM data out. Pre's bastardized EAS Synergy sync is a locked proprietary one-way black box silo. lose access to the Exchange Server and you're toast.

There have been numerous reports of Pre data loss - best not to do a comparison on robustness of backups yet.

Problems syncing

bluazul @ 10/12/2009 10:22:25 PM # Q
I have been unsuccessful at setting this up on my Centro. Every time I try to sync, it fails, giving me different error messages. The latest was error 0004:1860:903 HTTP/1.0 502 Bad Gateway Contet...

It used to sync the emails, but now it won't even do that! Any suggestions?
