Visor Platinum Returns from the Grave
In an an unprecedented move, Handspring has just announced that it is un-discontinuing the Visor Platinum. It's available now for a limited time directly from Handspring for $170. The company is also offering a free Flex Module Case with the handheld.
The Platinum was discontinued at the end of last year. It was replaced by newer models.
"Visor Platinum was one of our most successful and popular products," said Joe Sipher, VP of product marketing for Handspring. "We sold out of Visor Platinum during the holidays, and since then we've had strong interest from our customers in bringing the product back. We are re-releasing the product for a limited time to meet this demand."
The Platinum has 8 MB of RAM. It runs Palm OS 3.5.2.H on a 33 MHz Dragonball processor. Like all Visors, it uses non-flashable ROMs so the operating system can't be upgraded.
The free case normally sells for $30 and offers space for both a handheld and two standard-sized Springboard modules.

RE: ''Undiscontinuation''?
I have this mental picture of decaying Platinum corpses stumbling through a graveyard growling "Batteries! Batteries!!"
RE: ''Undiscontinuation''?
Anyone remember the HP Deskjet 500? It was one of the first
inkjet printers, which along with Canon was one of only two
injket print engines available (Apple used Canon). However,
the inkjet market was very slow, so HP decided to close out the
Deskjet 500 and dropped the price to about $350. The printers
flew off the shelves at that price. HP got smart and decided to
"undiscontinue" the printer and re-released it at the new price
permanently. And the rest is history.

In other words...
Haaaaa
Actually, very very embarassed for HS.
RE: In other words...
Seriously, Handspring might have been better-off taking those machines, changing the cases, and shipping them off as Visor Neos. But then, I guess that would have necessitated new packaging, etc.
What a pathetic attempt at "news" from a once-proud, now-decaying company. I honestly wonder if even the Treo--assuming it's all it's reported to be--can save them from the Dead Companies Hall of Fame.
RE: In other words...
the story probably is the truth, but i dont think handspring is gonna die/.
They can have mine back...
I've had mine about 10 months and hated every day with it. The paint is worn off in places, it feels like it's falling apart, and that clip-off cover is beyond a pain. Complete junk.
I've missed by Palm III everyday since I purchased it... but I needed the 8MB.
And why anyone would buy it when they can now have a Sony with 16 MB for the same price is beyond me.
RE: In other words...
> for the same price is beyond me.
They can't. The S360 is $200, $40 more.
RE: In other words...
This is just silly!
I guess any way to get some news coverage is what they must be going for. Oh Well.

Please post messages like these to the appropriate Forum. This thread has nothing at all to do with Sony products.
RE: In other words...
1) Sony change their connector every 3 months
2) Sony doesnt support their PDA
3) Clie has no accessories
4) 320X320 sucks it's not standard
5) Memory stick sucks it's not standard.
if you stay here longer you'll get used to it, don't worry.
Sigh

Plam Spotting...
Anyone notice that in the TV show 24, the hero is used
a Visor with what look like an ActiveLink Module, while
the bad guy used a Sony Clie?

And the girl who turned out to be a traitor was using a Samsung I300.
I especially liked how their Visor could download satellite IMAGES using the GPS locator. "Look out, there's a bad guy behind that tree over there!" ;)

Good Point! Someone claimed that the good guys use Macs and the bad guys
use PCs, *including* Ms. I300, who we *thought* was a good guy. I can't
really tell PCs from Macson that show.

Nina *did* say the image was a few hours old and Jack said he just wanted
a rough head count of the bad guys, not exact postions.
It sure did look like they were using it as a GPS, though. Is there a
GPS/modem combo module we don't know about? :)
Meanwhile the bad guy with the Clie used it merely to look at an image of
the guy he was about to kill to comfirm his identity. Go figure.
Whither the Neo?
RE: Whither the Neo?
Maybe they just had a bunch of silver cases left over and are slapping them onto existing Neo guts? I can't imagine the production lines being very much affected at all.
Still, it's a nice machine if it fits your needs.

Trust me...
Just so funny....

dissapointing sales performance for Treo!!!

RE: dissapointing sales performance for Treo!!!
Here's a new marketing campaign for Handspring:
Visor: get the *new* pathetic piece of crap
OR
NOW get the *old* piece of crap that doesn't suck quite as bad as the new one!
Seriously, Handspring got it right by adding the Springboard slot with the original Visor (particularly the Deluxe), and they got it right with the Prism - oh, wait, except for the paint that literally COMES OFF when you HOLD IT. Let's look at how many models they've released:
1) Visor Solo
2) Visor Deluxe
3) Visor Platinum
4) Visor Prism
5) Visor Edge
6) Visor Pro
7) Visor Neo
We'll say 2 out of 7 were really good, but let's make it 1.5 out of 7 because the Prism had cheap-casing issues. That's a batting average of .214--not exactly a great performance record by any means.
So tell me again what a great company Handspring is?

I think that the company that produces the OS, sets the standards. Which is why I don't go with Handspring or Sorny (Stony), although the latter has caught my eye on several occasions.
Here's my take; Go with Palm if you want a PDA that'll have a lot of support (customer base), accessories, and upgradability. Go with Sony if you want a PDA that does everything you need it to do NOW, and in the very near future, regardless of add-ons. Go with Handspring to be bloody different.
RE: dissapointing sales performance for Treo!!!
LOL LOL LOL LOL
You must be kidding!
First of all Apple produces high-quality hardware and software, while HS only produces cheap, toy-like devices, without any appeal. Their only advantage at one point, the expansion module seems like a joke right now.
RE: dissapointing sales performance for Treo!!!
Well I see the comparison of Palm to Sony to be similar to Microsoft and Apple. At least Sony des innovate and make quality product. on the other hand handspring only clams to be innovating and make crappy products.
Platinum is the best looking Visor

RE: Platinum is the best looking Visor
You know, we 'crusty-edge-of-innovation' types like to rant about innovation and other nonsense like that, but the average user just wants the basic functionality for a sensible price.
