Tech Center Labs USB Charger Review

The fine folks at Tech Center Labs (aka Tale Stuff) have been producing a slew of high-quality peripherals for Palm OS devices for a number of years. I’m glad to see this tradition continued with their newest—and most elegantly simple — product yet. The TCL USB Charge Cable is ten inches in length and has a standard Palm Athena/MultiConnector tip at one end and a standard USB connector at the other end. The cable works with all Athena/MultiConnector Palm devices and any computer’s USB port. Read on for the full review...

Verizon to Release Treo 700wx on Feb 20th?

Palm Windows Mobile Treo 700w ~ Click for largerRumor: Engadget are reporting that the long-awaited Treo 700wx for Verizon is finally set to launch on February 20th. The pricing leaked is high in typically Verizon fashion; $620 retail, $450 w/ one-year contract and $400 with a two-year contract. A $100 mail-in rebate still appears to be in the works, as previously reported.

The 700wx's main claim to fame is a doubling of the meagre 32mb of RAM found on the 700w, launched as a Verizon exclusive in January 2006. No word as of yet if Palm or the CDMA carriers are planning for Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for the 700w/wx along the lines of the forthcoming GSM Treo 750 upgrade mentioned earlier this week at 3GSM.

Unofficial Fix For Recent Treo Security Hole

Treo Find ExploitPIC reader and Palm OS developer Donald Kirker has released a patch for the Treo security vulnerability recently disclosed by Symantec. Previously, one could bypass the Treo's security lockout while on a call and use the Find application to search the databases for public records, potentially exposing sensitive information. The new patch disables the Find application while the device is locked, protecting your data from prying eyes.

Please note this is an unofficial patch, created by an independent developer and is not supported by Palm in any way. Use at your own risk!

Palm Shares Rise on Wall Street Rumors

Palm Inc takeover/buyout/merger rumors are being tossed around again on Wall Street this week, which has sent Palm's stock price to a four month high. Shares closed today at $16.45 up $1.06, or about 7 percent according to Reuters. These rumors seem to come up at least once or twice every year, this time Motorola is being pitched as the possible suitor.
"The strength today in Palm shares is being attributed to rumors ... that Motorola could make a bid for them," said William Lefkowitz, options strategist at vFinance Investments, brokerage firm in New York.

Also of note in Palm financial news, a major hedge fund company, Galleon Management, has recently acquired 6.345M shares of Palm stock, which is about a 6.2% stake in the company.

Palm OS Treo Security Vulnerability Posted

Symantec Vulnerability Research has posted a new security advisory on a new Treo data vulnerability. The researchers have found a method to bypass the Treo system password and locking mechanism using the find feature.

The advisory states:

Palm OS Treo smartphones are equipped with a system password lock to secure contents of handheld data from unauthorized access. When this lock is engaged, Treo's built-in Find feature is still accessible and can be used to perform searches on text in Treo applications and databases (e.g. SMS Messages, Memos, Calendar, Tasks, etc). Search results are accessible, and depending on their size, may be truncated. An attacker may use this vulnerability to retrieve information from a locked device.

Report: 64 Million Smartphones Shipped in 2006

Canalys's latest worldwide smart mobile device report says that global shipments of all smart mobile devices rose 30% year-on-year in Q4-06 for a total of 64 million smartphones shipped in 2006. Their market estimates show that Nokia, RIM, Motorola and Palm each held onto a place among the top five worldwide smart mobile device vendors in Q4 2006, but some positions changed. Nokia retained its lead, while RIM moved up a place into second, nudging ahead of Motorola. Palm remained in fourth, while Sony Ericsson broke into fifth place for the first time since Q2 2004, thanks largely to shipments of FOMA devices in Japan. Its EMEA smart phone shipments were also considerably higher than in previous quarters thanks to the arrival of new models.
