Palm Treo 700p Review

Treo 700p photosPalm's Treo 700p is the latest in a now long linage of Treo smartphones. The Treo 700p combines the benefits of a full featured mobile phone with the Palm OS mobile computing platform. From a visual perspective the design changes are small, evolutionary refinements of a proven smartphone form factor. Palm has released new drivers for their Universal Wireless IR keyboard. This new driver, dated June 2, is available for both Palm OS and Windows Mobile OSes. It adds some compatibility fixes, as well as support for the Treo 700p.

Walt Mossberg, the Wall Street Journal's personal technology reviewer, is widely regarded as a huge fan of Palm's Treo line. Walt recently put two smartphone heavyweights to the test: Motorola's new Windows Mobile Q, available exclusively on Verizon and Palm's Treo 700p, available on both Sprint and Verizon. Despite the Q coming in with sleek Razr-like styling cues and an astounding low price ($200 w/ 2-year contract), He still gives the nod to the $400 Treo 700p. The Associated Press is reporting that a U.S. appeals court today revived the Xerox vs. Palm, 3com patent dispute over the Graffiti handwriting-recognition technology. The case first came to court in 1997 and has been tied up in the legal system ever since. The dispute is responsible for Palm ceasing use of the Graffiti input system and moving on to Graffiti 2.

Treo 650 Launches on the O2 Network

Palm and O2, a leading provider of mobile services to consumers and businesses in the UK, have announced that the award-winning Palm Treo 650 smartphone is now available in the O2 business portfolio. The agreement with O2 strengthens Palm's position in the UK market with the goal of continuing to expand Treo smartphone presence in Europe and providing the best mobile-computing experience with the Treo family of products.

BinaryClock v2 Released

BinaryClock for Palm OSTamoggemon Software has released BinaryClock v2.0. The program adds a true Binary Clock display to your Palm OS handheld or smartphone. It is a small and quirky utility thats shows a unique view of the current time. This new version expands the number of features and customizable options including: adjustable geometry graphics, high-res+ cabable, colors, TrueType font support via Font Bucket and new alarm options.

It comes with a 14-day free trial and can be registered for $6.95.

Lunar Landing Simulator v2 Released

Lunar Excursion Module Simulator v2.0 is now out for the Palm OS. LEM Sim realistically simulates landing phase of the Apollo moon mission. The game features realistic physics, actual Apollo LEM instruments and NASA style sound effects.

AvantGo for RSS Released

iAnywhere today announced that AvantGo for RSS is now out of beta and is freely available. With AvantGo for RSS, users can easily view mobile RSS subscriptions. Users can add any RSS feed to their account, without installing additional software, and then synchronize using a wireless or desktop Internet connection to receive the feed items in a format optimized for their device.

Intel to Sell Off XScale Division?

Rumor: The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Intel's XScale mobile processor division is up for sale. Intel XScale processors are the main CPU in all current Palm handhelds and smartphones and many other mobile devices and PDAs. The report claims that Intel is looking to shed some of its product lines in a strategic business reevaluation.

Limited-Edition Black Tie Treo 650

Palm Treo 650 Black Tie EditionAccording to a message board thread on the Mapaland.org Palm forums, a special limited-edition batch of "Black Tie" Treo 650s have been produced for select markets in the Asia/Pacific region.

According to the poster and a e-mail announcement from Palm, the specs are identical to a standard Treo 650 save for a a special black styling and silicone coating on the unit's housing. In addition to the cosmetic changes, a multifunction pen stylus and the new Palm Treo hard case are also included in the bundle.
