Palm, Inc. today reported revenue of $388.5 million in its third quarter of fiscal year 2006, ended March 3, up 36 percent from the year-ago period.
"We delivered strong results this quarter, a result of solid execution against company objectives," said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm. "We extended our record of double-digit year-over-year revenue growth and profitability gains. Smartphone sell-through reported by our carrier partners more than doubled over the year-ago period, validating our strategic decision to support multiple open platforms and offer a choice of smartphones based on either Windows Mobile or Palm OS."

The
Wall Street Journal has a new article about Palm Inc today.
The article looks at how Palm has "capitalized" on the BlackBerry patent drama. It cites examples of how current and potential RIM customers are now considering Treo smartphones. It also looks at the competition between Palm and RIM and includes quotes from the two CEOs, Ed Colligan and Jim Balsillie.
The Treo is catching up to the BlackBerry by some measures. BlackBerrys currently outsell Treos by two to one, but analysts say many BlackBerrys go to existing customers who are upgrading from old devices. Meanwhile, the Treo, which is still too new for many upgrades, is sold primarily to new customers. [...] In the quarter ended in late November, Palm sold 602,000 Treos, nearing the 645,000 new subscriber accounts that RIM signed on in the same period. Internally, Palm executives say they believe that the Treo will outsell BlackBerrys by the end of this year.

Star Command is a Palm OS re-creation of the old Star Fleet game of the early 80s, which was (of course) a Star Trek simulation. I was excited to recently discover that this game exists for Palm OS on
PalmAddicts, as I spent countless hours enjoying this on a classic mac ages ago. In the game you control a starship and travel the galaxy fighting enemies in order to stay alive and rise in rank. Names have been slightly changed for trademark purposes, so now you fight Krutons (instead of Klingons) and Zingers (instead of Romulans).
Star Command is compatible with Palm OS 3.5 and higher. It will run on older greyscale handhelds as well as color and high resolution screens on the latest models. The game features trek-like ships, controls, weapons and sound effects. The full version costs $12.00 to register and there is a free trial that will allow you to play through the 3rd rank, where cloaking Zinger's begin to appear.
