Astraware and Pazzazz Games have announced the release of Moonfighter for Palm OS. Moonfighter is a fun gravity-based shoot-em-up that challenges players to pilot their spacecraft around lunar terrains and blast aliens whilst collecting energy spheres to extend their mission time. Players can progress through thousands of Moonfighter levels, each one offering more challenging terrains and more enemy attacks.

Palm and Verizon today announced the
Palm Treo 700w smartphone goes on sale tomorrow, January 5th. The Treo 700w smartphone is the first Treo smartphone to run the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system. It is also the first Treo to operate on Verizon's high speed EV-DO data network.

Garmin today announced a GPS navigation system for customers using Palm OS based handhelds or smartphones with Bluetooth. This GPS package includes navigation software with feature-rich points of interest and Garmin's GPS 10, a sensor that receives location data from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and transmits that information to mobile devices enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology.

Michael Mace is reporting on this
blog that, Japanese Telcom NTT DoCoMo has announced that it is raising its ownership of ACCESS from 7% of the company's stock to 11.66%, for a price of about $120 million. This effectively puts DoCoMo in an a minority ownership stake of the Palm OS and the upcoming Linux version.

A person claiming to be a Verizon employee has posted details on the launch and price of the Palm Treo 700w over at
HowardForums. The speculation is that the device will be formally announced during the Bill Gates keynote at CES on January 4th. The Palm Windows Mobile smartphone will be available in Verizon's Business channel on Jan 5th, with retail availability expected shortly after on the 10th.

PCWorld has
published their take on the 50 greatest gadgets of the past 50 years. They rated each gadget on its usefulness, design, degree of innovation, and influence on subsequent gadgets, as well as their "cool factor." The list features two Jeff Hawkins originals. The Pilot 1000 ranks an impressive 4th (behind the walkman, iPod and Tivo), and the Handspring Treo 600 comes in at 20th.

In the article Marty talks about Linux as a mobile device OS and the challenges it faces as an embedded system, the GPL software development process and Linux development tools. While he can't talk too much about Palm OS for Linux due to a PalmSource NDA, it is a interesting read.

Palm today reported revenue of $444.6 million in its second quarter of fiscal year 2006, ended Dec. 2, up 18 percent from the year-ago period. Palm CEO Ed Colligan stated in the earnings call that Palm will announce three new smartphones next year, in addition to the Treo 700w.
