Palm and Research In Motion (RIM) today announced that they are working together to bring BlackBerry Connect to the Palm Treo 650 smartphone. The companies expect the solution to be available in the United States and internationally starting in early calendar 2006.

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL or the Labs), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux, and PalmSource, today announced that PalmSource has joined OSDL as a founding member of the Labs' new Mobile Linux Initiative. Avvenu has announced that its free remote access service now supports a range of devices from Palm, including the Treo 650 smartphone, the LifeDrive, and the new Palm TX handheld. Specifically optimized for handheld devices, this service gives Palm customers fast access to their files, folders and photos stored on a computer, directly from their Palm devices.

Palm has lowered the retail price of the
Tungsten E2 handheld down to $199. The TE2 features a high resolution screen, nonvolatile flash memory and Bluetooth wireless.

Palm is now offering to replace defective SIM card trays on affected Cingular Treo 650 smartphones. There is an issue with some models that causes the phone to turn itself off spontaneously because of a loose SIM card.

reporting that Palm may ship a Linux powered feature phone by years end, say sources close to the company. The article claims the device will be powered by Wind River Linux, not PalmSource's version of Palm OS for Linux.

reporting that Motorola was also interested in purchasing PalmSource. Motorola claims PalmSource had accepted their offer and has asked a judge to award them a $8.7 million dollar breakup fee.

ARM has announced its new Cortex-A8 processor at the ARM developers conference in Santa Clara, California. The new chip design is expected to be far more powerful than current chips making it ideal for demanding mobile products running multi-channel video, audio, and gaming applications. It is expected to offer speeds of over 1GHz.
