Bug With Adjusting the m515 Sidelight?

As part of adjusting the sidelight on an m515, the user opens a dialog box that covers the lower half of the screen. Unfortunately, it seems that Palm programmers forgot to include a "refresh" command after closing this box. Many programs do it themselves, however many others don't. This means that after tapping the "Done" option, the top half of the screen will still display the original application, while the lower half, where the sidelight box was, is white.

Mark/Space has released The Missing Sync 2.2, which allows USB equipped Macs to use Sony Clié handhelds. The new version adds support for the S360.

Handspring is now offering a Treo USB Charging Cradle for $50. It allows the Treo to HotSync and includes an AC power adapter.

Palm and Sony Ericsson to Push Bluetooth

Palm inc. recently released a Bluetooth wireless-networking SD card and now it's going to put its mouth where its money is. It and Sony Ericsson have announced an agreement in which the two will jointly market the T68 mobile phone, Palm handhelds, and the Palm Bluetooth Card as the ideal solution for mobile professionals.

Acrobat Reader 2.0 Beta Now Available

Adobe has released into public beta Acrobat Reader for Palm OS 2.0. This new version adds some features users have been clamoring for, including color and Macintosh support. It can also read secured PDF files. The beta is available now and is, of course, free, though the user must register it.

CDMA Version of Treo Coming this Summer

Currently, Handspring's Treo smartphones work only on GSM networks. While GSM is widely used around the world, it has a small percentage of the U.S. market with CDMA predominating. It has been known for a while that the company is working on a CDMA version of the Treo and Handspring has just announced that one will be available this summer. Sprint is helping with the development and the new version will work with the 3G network Sprint will be rolling out this summer. The companies will disclose information regarding specific product features, capabilities, and pricing when the product is ready for launch.

The Radio Shack Canada is advertising the Handspring Treo for $1000 CDN and says that it will be shipping April 2. They appear to be partnering with Rogers/AT&T's GSM network. -David Harvey and Hani

Handspring Releases Treo Mail Beta

Handspring has just released a beta version of Treo Mail, its new wireless email service that provides access to desktop email. It can forward email from a PC to the Treo and back. This beta software is available now for free. Handspring expects to begin selling subscriptions for the commercial version of Treo Mail in mid-2002.

Vindigo No Longer Free

Vindigo is a service that provides city guides, movie listings, and restaurant reviews. Until now, it was free for Palm OS users. Today, Vindigo 2.0 was launched and it costs $25 for a one year subscription. Also new in this version are user ratings of restaurants, Metacritic's summaries of movie reviews, color maps, and more. The service now has guides for 23 major U.S. cities and London.

Palm To Replace Faulty USB Cradles

Palm Inc. finally has a fix for the the static electricity problem that causes some of its models to suddenly stop HotSyncing. According Cnet, Palm plans to replace the USB cradles from the m500 series with a redesigned one that prevents static electricity from arcing between the handheld and the cradle. According to Palm, this static electricity disrupts the handheld enough that it is no longer able to HotSync.

More Details on Magellan GPS Receiver for m500 Series

Thales Navigation has released some more details on the GPS receiver it is developing for the m500 series. The Magellan GPS Companion was first announced in early January. Yesterday , the company said it would be capable of 12 hours of continuous use, about five times longer than competitive products. It won't be available until sometime this Spring and a price still isn't available

Quickies: NR Series, Palm, Universal Bridge

Sony has officially announced the NR70V and NR70 at Germany's CeBIT tradeshow. The announcement doesn't give a price or a release date for Europe but people who visit Sony's booth at the show are being told it should be available there around June. -Christian

Review: Sony PEG-S360

Recently, Sony replaced the S320 with the S360. The primary change is the increase in memory from 8 MB to 16 MB. This makes it the only low-end Palm OS model with that much RAM, twice as much as its competition. News Editor Ed Hardy has this review.
