French speaking customers can now buy a Visor in a localised version from a
Handspring web site, also in that language. Visors will also be available later this month through retailers FNAC, Carrefour, and The Phone House in France as well as through major retail stores in French-speaking Belgium and Switzerland. Handspring expects its these stores to carry a variety of Springboard modules as they become available in localised editions. Handspring's backup module, 8 MB Flash module, and a range of Visor accessories are available immediately. The Visors will have suggested retail prices of F 1.171 for the Visor Solo, F 1.463 for the Visor and F 1.839 for the Visor Deluxe edition (excluding the value-added tax).

Good Technology has debuted its first product, the
SoundsGood audioplayer, at DEMOmobile 2000. It has 64 MB of memory letting it store more than an hour of MP3s. It can also can function as a stand-alone digital music player. With an EnergyClip accessory, it can play music for over 10 hours with just a single AA battery while maintaining its small size or run for ten hours off the Visor's two AAs. It will be available in early October for $269.

Guard Dog for Palm, that prevents rogue applications from viewing, stealing or deleting data. It lets users decide what applications are trustworthy and prevents those that are not from accessing sensitive information. It also continuously monitors the device, searching for specific actions and immediately notifying the user of any strange or malicious behavior. This available now and is a free addition to their
wireless security center, a subscription to which costs $29.95 per year.

PalmStation has updated their
article on the rumored lawsuit against Aaron Ardiri and Gambit Studios to say that the lawsuit appears to have never existed. Hal-J said, "It seems that this rumor has been proven false, or at least anyone who would have attested to it's validity have now denied it " The now debunked rumor said that Mr. Ardiri and his company would be sued for damages caused by the Liberty Crack trojan horse that Mr. Ardiri has admitted to creating.

announced that it has created Palm Ventures, a new organization designed to make strategic investments in companies that will grow, enhance, and support the Palm Economy. "The handheld market is growing, and Palm is committed to investing in opportunities that will accelerate this growth,'' said Robert Hayes, Director of Palm Ventures. They initially have $50 million to spend.

iBIZ Corp. has announced new versions of the iBIZ KeySync keyboard and the iBIZ folding travel cradle; both will be compatible with the Handspring Visor. The
KeySync keyboard will be upgraded to be compatible with the Handspring devices, while remaining compatible with most other handhelds. A new model of the folding travel cradle has been designed specifically for the Handspring line. Both will be available in full retail distribution and on the Internet in time for this year's busy holiday season.

According to
Inter@ctive Week, Palm Inc. will launch a new Web portal before the end of this year. Mark Bercow, Palm's vice president of strategic alliances and platform development, said the portal will designed to be used by Web-connected Palms and depend heavily on technology acquired when Palm
bought AnyDay.com in May. It will concentrate on providing users with time- and location-based information.

Reuters is
reporting that Palm will create a new PDA for the Japanese market. Also, Kazuki Furuya of Palm Inc. said, "We are planning to offer a Palm-based wireless Internet service in the first half of next year," This device and service will reportedly link Palm with NTT DoCoMo, Japan's dominant mobile phone carrier. Furuya also said the device will use packet transmission technology and that the monthly service should cost less than 4,000 yen.

Andersen Consulting has just released a
study that states that 83% of the people who took a week of vacation since April got in touch with the office during their trip and 60% brought some form of mobile technology with them. Please tell us about your experiences, good or bad, using your Palm to keep connected while vacationing. Did you resent having to check your work e-mail from the beach? How difficult was it to get connected from the hotel room, RV, or whatever?

Firepad Inc. has demonstrated to industry analysts the world's first high-speed streaming video technology for the Palm.
FireViewer 5, which will be released later this year, is capable of displaying full-screen video data on a Palm at up to 25 frames per second. It is part of a client/server solution also capable of displaying hypertext and large graphics in a group of proprietary formats.

CBS SportsLine.com offers Palm VII users a Football Live PQA. Football Live lets you follow the football game of your choice live, as it happens. The PQA will be available this Sunday from the
NFL page on their site.
The baseball version of the PQA has been available for a while. It allows you to see all the games being played today and drill down to see the exact current status of a chosen game.

The world-wide
shortage in components Palm needs to makes its products continues and Palm executives are already getting nervous about the Christmas buying season. "We're in backlog on literally every single product in the line," Palm chief competitive officer Michael Mace said.
However, in a recent online Q&A session, Jeff Hawkins, co-founder of Handspring, pointed out that they are having much fewer problems. He said, "we don't use flash memory, which is the most affected components. Another reason is we maintain very close relationships with our vendors and have forecasted our needs accurately. " TRG also has managed to keep up with the demand for their products.
