Quickies: AOL, AIM for Palm and ATT Global Dialer Update

AOL, AIM for Palm
On August 30, AOL officially released the final 1.0 version of AIM for the Palm OS. You can download it here. Also, AOL recently released AOL Mail for the Palm OS, however it also contains AOL Instant messenger within it. You can download it here.

ATT Global Dialer Update
Finally, ATT Global Network has released an update to their Palm OS dialer, version 1.2. Previously, a user using Palm OS 3.3+ would have to change the dialed number in Prefs, but now the dialer automatically dials the selected number in the program itself. This can be downloaded here. NOTE: The ATT Global website does NOT reflect the version change, however the program is in fact the updated version.

Eudora Internet Suite 2.0 Available This Month

Qualcomm Inc. today announced it will release the commercial version of Eudora Internet Suite 2.0 by the end of this month. EIS 2.0 software includes Eudora’s email client and Web browser for Palm-powered handhelds. A beta is available now.

Palm Welcomes 100,000th Developer, Expands Developer Services

Palm Inc. has reached 100,000 members in it registered developer program. Palm's registered development community grew by 625% in the past year, with over 42% of total developers hailing from non-U.S. markets. Gabriel Acosta-Lopez, senior director of alliance and partner services, said, "Besides our growth in Web content and development tools, we're seeing significant expansion in corporate, in-house development and other enterprise initiatives."

To celebrate, Palm Inc. announced a new support program, the Palm OS Developer Services Network, that will offer easier access to technical information, start-up business services, professional networking and job listings.

SpeechWorks to Add Voice Access to AnyDay

AnyDay.com, the on-line personal scheduling and contact-list service bought by Palm Inc. in May, has inked a contract with SpeechWorks International to add voice recognition to its service so users can call AnyDay on the phone and verbally add entries to their on-line datebook. This should be in place by the first quarter of 2001.

Last week, Palm announced they will be starting a Web portal based on technology acquired when they purchased AnyDay so it isn't inconceivable that some of this technology might eventually be used there.

Quickies: PalmTracker, PalmModem, PDA Toolbox

PalmTracker
PalmTracker is a new service that helps the Palm community keep their software up to date. They offer hourly updates, a searchable database, e-mail notification, and more.

New PalmModem Available
The new 33.6 PalmModem that was announced last month is available. It is backordered on Palm's site but a quick search of PriceGrabber turned up several places that have it in stock for less than Palm's suggested $99. It comes with a copy of MultiMail Pro. Be careful that you are buying the 33.6 version. The old 14.4 looks the same and on some sites has the same product name.

Bluetooth Momentum Growing, Despite Delays

BT_CombinationMark Allied Business Intelligence has released a study that indicates that the use of Bluetooth will continue to grow strongly over the next several years, desite what it refers to as "recent market delays". While they project that only 56 million Bluetooth-enabled devices will be sold in 2001, look for over 1.4 billion nodes by 2005.

Back in June, both Palm Inc. and Silicon Wave demonstrated Bluetooth wireless connectivity for Palm PDAs.

More on the Hack

As most noticed, we got a return visit from "Pimpshiz" and the site was compromised again. As seen in this News.com article, "In an email interview, Pimpshiz claimed to have defaced 110 sites with the message in four separate rounds of attacks--using an unpublished hole in Microsoft Windows NT to infiltrate the Web servers. The hacker promised a "huge episode 5" soon." More as it develops, many thanks to everyone who alerted us to the attack.

Lotus Demos Notes for Palm

This year's DEMOMobile show seems to be all about products that aren't ready to be shipped yet. Lotus showed off an alpha version of its Mobile Notes for the Palm. Lotus already sells EasySync, which synchronizes Notes databases with the built-in apps on a Palm but Mobile Notes will be a true client to replace the built-in apps. It should be available in the first half of 2001.

FileMaker Mobile Coming this Winter

FileMaker, Inc. has announced FileMaker Mobile for the Palm OS platform, a companion to FileMaker Pro 5 that will allow a user to transfer and synchronize data between FileMaker Pro databases on Windows and Mac OS systems and Palm handhelds. Users will be able to view, modify, add, and delete records on both the PDA and the PC and choose which fields and records are downloaded. It will be available this Winter for under $100.

ecrio Proposes Rich Instant Messaging Platform

A startup named ecrio has demonstrated a new instant messaging platform at DEMOMobile 2000. The ecrio Rich Instant Messaging Platform lets users instantly send handwritten notes in any language, as well as drawings, images and files to any Internet-enabled wireless device.   A client-agnostic platform, the ecrio Rich Instant Messenger runs across PDAs with Palm OS, WinCE and EPOC OS, Internet-enabled mobile phones, PC systems, and others. ecrio’s solution consists of server-based host applications as well as a multitude of client applications. Content is dynamically reformatted to the sender’s and recipient’s device limitations.

We were Hacked

Sometime late last night around 2 AM EST, the PalmInfocenter was hacked. You can check out the hacked page here. The "hacker" simply renamed the homepage and made his anti-RIAA propaganda page the default. Fortunately no harm was done to the site, and it appears that this was part of a random "pro-Napster" hacking attack. Everything should be back to normal and we'll continue to bring you the latest Palm OS news.
